Desi Douche of the Day

Happy Thursday, mutineers! Thanks to Ennis for sharing this jaw-dropping gem with the Mutiny. It brings to mind a couple of questions. First of all, who is this smarmy individual? Why is he wearing two button-down shirts one on top of the other (in clashing colors)? Is he aware of what he’s really saying? (I’m thinking he cobbled a couple of cliches together for a really awkward result.) How long did it take him to write and memorize this Bollywood-gone-wrong type script? Who is this girl that only likes BMWs? How successful was the proposal? It would be hilarious if they were married by now. I’m picturing twin boys wearing two button-downs a-piece riding BMW trikes.

What do you folks think? Cute or creepy? (By the way, “I just want to conclude saying…okay, love doesn’t have a conclusion,” is my new favorite Away message.) It was posted two years ago on Valentine’s Day. Staged or genuine? I would not at all be surprised if it turned out to be real. We’ve all come across guys like these. Okay, at least I have. Ladies, imagine being on the receiving end of this playboy’s attention. Yuck.

  1. What’s so yucky about this poor dude? He seems so earnest…laying his heart out like that but saying he won’t die without her, just so that he doesn’t seem so vulnerable….awwww

  2. As per youtube, there are 115 + “likes” and 20 “dislikes” for the video. The tribe has spoken. Douche he is not.

The guy is genuine, he is ballsy(in clothing and action), he is creative (hence the video) He says some interesting things about his interpretation of what love is and what loving is. (i.e. love should build and not destroy, love has no conclusion, etc etc)

He clearly isn’t asking for reciprocation or a commitment, and is expressing himself in a very non-threatening way (hes not going to kill himself over it).

If you’re going to look at life with jaded glasses, you’ll never see anything good.

  3. Wow, did not expect this reaction. Guess y’all found it more charming than creepy. ‘Douche’ is harsh, agreed. Once again my love of alliteration in titles got the best of me. I should probably not try to be funny. And I wasn’t aware that the two-shirt deal was the norm where this gentleman is from, thanks for letting me know. That said, I still stand behind my ‘yuck’ comment. The ickiness factor has nothing to do with his clothing and his geographic location. It has to do with his attitude. Sorry Proposal Guy fans, I don’t see anything heartfelt in his little speech. I find it shallow, self-serving and overly dramatic. Maybe it’s just not my personal preference. But given that he’s an admitted flirt and all, if I were on the receiving end of such a video, I just wouldn’t take it too seriously. Just my two cents.

  4. I am not surprised by this reaction coming from an ABCD woman. IME, most ABCD women have bias against DBD guys. It’s like they associate “Indianess” with their uncles/father/grand father, and when they see DBD guys being romantic, they start imagining their uncles being romantic, which starts triggering “creepy” flags in their brains.

  5. There is a douche in this story , But it’s not the guy in the video. Anyone notice that he has more than a slight resemblance to M Night Shyamalan ?

  6. What is it with this overt defensiveness of some of the commentators? The guy should have said everything he wanted to say within a minute or so. He could have made the same points succinctly.

  7. I don’t have any comments on the video but wow, look at all the butthurt desi dudes crawling out of the woodwork. Who then come here to whine about how desi women don’t give them the time of day. Maybe you should work on your charming personalities instead. Hint: being a BJP fascist might not get you laid as easily as you may think.

His outfit would earn peals of laughter in my home. He looks like an extra from a Prabhu Deva music video.

  8. I just LOVE this post….I’m still wiping the tears away….maybe not for a week, maybe not for a day, but for this second…and this second feels like a million years….

  9. Dunno about douchey, but dude recites a badly rehearsed monologue, never mentions anything about the object of his affection or what makes her awesome, doesn’t really try to make the case for what makes him worthy, and y’all find it cute/earnest/vulnerable/genuine?

    Why such low standards?

  10. The dude’s alright. If he was my cousin, I would have kicked him for not thinking it through before hand. I hope he won this girl 😉 We need such love stories.

  11. Let me commence by thanking Zazou and desidouche for their kind words. I appreciate your support and am grateful that you see me/my intentions clearly. Thank you.

Anna, is this what you and buddies run this blog for? To make fun of your real Desi brethren and feel smug and happy afterward?

We “run” this blog because in 2004, we were each blogging about similar things separately, and we wanted one spot for aggregating such content, so that you didn’t have to go to Abhi’s, Manish’s, Vinod’s or my personal blogs to read about discrimination on the campaign trail or how the brown girl did on ANTM.

I am forced to take issue with your insinuations and their phrasing. “Real Desi brethren”? So only DBDs can lay claim to authenticity? That is ignorant and just exhausting to unpack; it’s also insulting. There is no blog which has tried harder to foster dialog between ABDs and DBDs than this one. And did you notice that terminology? We neither condone nor use the ubiquitous acronym “FOB” because we respect our first-generation friends.

Each blogger here is entitled to their own opinion and their interpretation of current events, just like our commenters are. We don’t speak with one voice, nor do we have an editorial process which approves content. I don’t agree with everything I read here, but I defend my co-bloggers rights to express themselves. There’s a way to convey displeasure with a post that doesn’t denigrate six years of volunteer efforts and I’d encourage everyone to remember that before accusing us of acting in bad faith.

I haven’t watched the video. I don’t know that I would’ve used the word “douche”, myself. But that’s what makes SM unique and hopefully, interesting– we aren’t all the same, and the way we view things differs accordingly. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Would you? 🙂

  12. the responses are much more interesting than the video – and, yes, I agree that the post has an element of ABD’s sniggering at IBD’s – without much knowledge of context or background.

In fairness, there is plenty that happens the other way around as well….

  13. 57 · metal mickey Maybe you should work on your charming personalities instead. Hint: being a BJP fascist might not get you laid as easily as you may think.

The BJP reference is gratuitous. The conflation of BJP and fascist is insulting. You are way out of line.

  14. 64 · Shilpa The conflation of BJP and fascist is insulting.

    But it is accurate.

Do fascists give up power when they lose elections? No. Did the BJP? Yes. Do fascists wage offensive wars? Yes. Did the BJP wage aggressive wars when it held national power? No. Do fascists favor social darwinism? Yes. Who was forcibly sterilizing SC/ST/OBC? Oh, right–Indira Gandhi from that horrible family you worship as deities, not the BJP. Your tired talking points are detached from reality.

    wow Shilpa, great response…

  17. Wow. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I find Shilpa’s comment to be really heartfelt and genuine. I hope whoever it’s intended for sees it for what it is, and doesn’t allow their standards for logic or historical arguments cloud their judgement.

  18. To echo Anna, ‘There is no blog which has tried harder to foster dialog between ABDs and DBDs than this one.’ I apologize if anyone felt this post demeaned them or their families. That was not my intention. My intention was to provide some mid-work-week entertainment and perhaps foster some good-natured humor. But it’s degenerated into a discussion that highlights the hurt some feel over what they consider an unfair, ill-natural depiction of their culture. Clearly I’ve hit a nerve. I think that’s another post for another time. But to reiterate, this is just a goofy guy pulling a goofy V-Day stunt. Thank you all for your comments.
