Archie Panjabi to star in CBS’s The Good Wife

Archie Panjabi, who you’ll remember from films like Bend It Like Beckham and A Mighty Heart, is set to appear this fall in a new CBS drama called The Good Wife. (Thanks to my SM mutineer from Philly, Neha, for the tip!) The show, a legal drama, centers around a woman (Julianna Luisa Margulies) whose husband, a high-profile politician, (played by Sex and the City’s Chris Noth), goes to jail after his involvement in a sex scandal. Margulies plays the wronged wife who decides to return to her job as an attorney after years as a stay-at-home mom. Panjabi plays the role of Kalinda, an East Indian kick-ass bisexual investigator who works alongside Margulies’s character on cases. It’ll be interesting to see how this show plays out. You can see Panjabi on Tuesdays starting with the show’s premiere on September 22 at 10 ET/PT.

  1. I am sweating that leather jacket like whoa.

Sexy, but bad for animals–I am torn, as always!

  2. “Archie Panjabi, who you’ll remember from films like Bend It Like Beckham and The Mighty Heart…”

She was great in East Is East too, as Om Puri’s daughter. I think that’s where I first noticed her.

  3. Nice to see her get more visible roles. Though I wonder how the bisexual angle will play in the community.

She seems to have a more vibrant presence on screen compared to the chick from ER who always seems so serious.

  4. since i can’t remember ever seeing the the bisexual thing on the big 3 networks, i wonder if because of Punjabi’s ethnicity, it is somehow easier to broach…ie, the eastern tantric thing makes it somewhat more acceptable to western audiences……..

You must be too young to remember L.A. Law, which featured a female bisexual attorney as one of the characters.

  6. BTW – can broadcast networks do drama anymore? There seems to be a split – you have procedural shows like CSI and Law & Order, or soapy female-oriented shows like Desperate Housewives and The Good Wife. Friday Night Lights has its moments in chronicling small town life, but even it hams it up with a tiresome teenage love triangle. To be fair, I am only in Season 1. Meanwhile, even basic cable offers up top notch drama like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Riches, and Damages.

  7. Archie Panjabi, who you’ll remember from films like Bend It Like Beckham and The Mighty Heart…

Also, The Constant Gardener, and most importantly, as Sam Tyler’s girlfriend Maya on the UK version of Life of Mars.

  8. What kind of name is Archie for a desi girl? Is it short for Archana or the parents were fans of Archie comics?

  9. Well, my Punjabi wife is named Archna, and she goes by “Archie” for short, so I’m going to guess that yes, it’s short for Arch(a)na.

  10. What kind of name is Archie for a desi girl? Is it short for Archana or the parents were fans of Archie comics?

Caution! Those questions “What kind of name is X for a desi?”, and “What kind of desi has a name like X?” are tiresome old chestnuts. Though this particular instance sounds more curious than judgmental, it can nevertheless be a very dubious question at times.

  11. Not to be all nitpicky, but it’s “A Mighty Heart,” not “The…”

Anyways, I THOUGHT I saw Archie on a preview for this show tonight! I saw the commercial out of the corner of my eye and made a mental note to IMDB it later on…looks like you did my work for me! I wasn’t remotely interested in it but I’ll watch it just for her.

  12. Good for her, I’m looking foward to the show.

Her real name is Archana, but she said once in an interview that she likes to go by “Archie” because its unique and not easy to forget.

  13. It’s all good! That only stuck out to me because I had just watched that movie two days ago and it’s still sitting out on my desk…

  14. She’s a VERY good actress; her youthful looks will surely help her have a long career.

If you are in the DC/MD/VA area, please check out my Yahoo! group. I started this group to meet more people of Bangladeshi heritage (whether they grew up in the US, Canada, UK, etc. ). You don’t have to be an expert on Bangladesh or Bengali to join. We can discuss online what we’d like to do, then eventually get together at a convenient DC location. If you want to be considered for membership, write some details about yourself: name, age, profession, why you want to join, interests, etc.

  15. She has always been an impressive actress in what I have seen her, though she hasn’t had many big roles till date. Very cute looking girl as well; will watch this with interest!
