Guest Blogger: Ravi

As of this weekend we have invited yet another guest blogger into the fold of our secret world blogging headquarters in North Dakota. The twist this time is that our new blogger is only 18 years old, making him even younger than our over-worked intern (the intern was not happy about this). Here is the email we received from Ravi. It had a rather interesting proposition in it:

My name is Ravi M and I’m a graduating high school student from Lake Forest High School and I’ll be attending Harvard this fall. I’m an avid reader of your blog, and will be attending the DNC in a few weeks as a member of the Junior State of America’s 2008 Election Symposia, a non-profit, non-partisan civic education program. I’m writing because I’d like to offer my services/be considered to be a guest student correspondent for your blog during the DNC…This could give your blog an opportunity to showcase the viewpoints of a younger generation, and the trend in increasing political activism and awareness amongst my generation of Indian-Americans during this election year. I have experience as Editor-in-Chief of my school newspaper, and have won Scholastic Regional and National Awards for my journalism. In addition, I have served as the governor of the Junior State of America, a student-run debating organization, for the past two years, as well as Debate Team Captain the previous year, giving me a deep understanding of politics and the perspectives of our younger generation….

So now we will have two SM bloggers reporting from the convention n Denver in just a few weeks. Hmmm, maybe I can be the voice of the grizzled old cynic and Ravi can report with wide-eyed optimism. In any case, please join me in welcoming Ravi to SM.

Note: If any of our South Asian American readers has access to the Republican National Convention and would like to blog for SM from there then please email me: abhi [at] sepiamutiny dot com.

  1. blogging for SM.. That’s like my dream come true, and this kid’s four years younger than me.

    sad.

  2. perspectives
    of our younger generation

Elitist! The perspectives of the younger generation happens at the grass roots level (not the DNC!)and the common Indian-American (under < $250,000) does not attend an Ivy League school like you ;), bro.

Just kidding (I hope you got the Obama ref).

    Welcome to SM!

  3. blogging for SM.. That’s like my dream come true, and this kid’s four years younger than me. sad.

I feel like a loser compared to this kid and I’m 22.

  4. South Asian American readers has access to the Republican National Convention

I believe Ramesh and Dinesh are covering the Republican National Convention.

  5. ravi darling, you’ve obviously got brains. instead of being such a do-gooding boy scout you should concentrate on becoming a banker or a doctor and also on having fun rather than worrying about all the ills and injustices of the world. it’s only when one has helped oneself can one help others. i know this sounds cynical but i used to be like you and i’m 34 now and i wish i had just had a good time with friends and concentrated on establishing myself rather than being such an activist. once you’ll get older you’ll realize that the left is just as bad as the right wing and staying away from politics and just looking after oneself and having a pleasant time makes more sense. best of luck to you.

Sadagopan Ramesh and Dinesh Karthik are going to the RNC? (seriously though, who would step up to the plate that hasn’t, like a color-blind angel, eschewed anything smelling of dirty, progressive identity-politics?)

  7. Good for you, Ravi. Don’t let the cynics get to you. This 37 year-old will see you guys in Denver ….

  8. hey ravi as a former JSA guy my self, good luck, and have fun; i always hated that the conventions was the summer after i graduated.

  9. YAY! Just two years older than me. This is AMAZING to have a person from my generation being represented on SM.

  10. thanks sepia for the eye candy (raj and ravi). there’s lots on raj on the internet but we definitely need more pictures of ravi.

  11. I am surprised and offended at the sexist comments made by some people here. “Eye candy”? WTF? It is never ok to objectify a human (man or woman). Instead of focusing on his pretty face, why don’t you consider Ravi’s accomplishments of getting into Harvard (yes Harvard! -the greatest college in the world) and being captain of his high school debate team which gave him such a deep understanding of politics and the perspectives of our younger generation.

  12. we all admire ravi’s accomplishments. that’s already a given. abdul, you don’t have to take everything so seriously. chill out. you’re going to give yourself hypertension or an ulcer if you are so easily perturbed. i think some participants in this blog appreciate some light relief to break up all the heaviness we discuss.

  13. getting into Harvard (yes Harvard! -the greatest college in the world)

Umm, their graduate programs are awesome in most fields, but–college? I think not.

  14. “Hmmm, maybe I can be the voice of the grizzled old cynic and Ravi can report with wide-eyed optimism.” you’ve not gone gray yet have you big man??

  15. well, ravi seems great and all, but the lack of mention of the spelling bee in that list of achievements does give me serious pause.

  16. Abhi, as a non-astronaut Ravi will probably have a more GROUNDED perspective of the convention. After all, judging by the description given of him, he doesn’t seem to have his HEAD IN THE CLOUDS.

  17. Was there ever a winner for the desi DNC inspired t-shirt contest? Apparently the “Who you calling Macaca?” t-shirts are no longer being sold on Cafe Press. Tried googling “desi obama t-shirt” to see if perhaps someone had already tackled this niche market, but no luck – although SM did pop up in the results 馃檪

  18. Congrats Ravi. You’re going to have all kinds of interesting DNC stories to bring to orientation week…exciting times.

  19. Another Harvard politico in the making. The only difference between the Young Republicans and the Young Democrats is that the Dems make a pretense of giving a hoot, when they really are not that different. Its called “slumming” in the circles his “younger generation” moves in.

Aiyo, first I have the Aunties spitting hostility my way for not having hitched myself to a male yet, in order to hatch a grandchild and now I have the youths sniffing disdainfully at my obsolescence. May kya karo or however the hell you Northies spell it…and may I also remind you young lady, that I merit respect because I am old enough to be your (albeit disgraced and surely disowned teen) mother? Oh my, that so doesn’t help my case.

Also, Abdul (and I) are kidding. I think. For him, I mean. I’m definitely kidding. Except for the Northies part. 馃槈

    .

Ravi, from someone whose best memories of high school are from JSA’s Fall and Spring State and Stanford one-days and who was also captain of the debate team (and did the teen journalist thing)– vanakkam. I was very excited to see your email. 馃檪 Make the mutiny proud (and keep Abhi from getting arrested…no pressure).

Wot the other cougar said. ravi darling, be a movie star after you’re done with all this Ivy hoopla– there aren’t enough Harvard alums in that game. Get photographed a lot at the convention! And abdul, that pretty face IS an accomplishment, though maybe not ravi’s own…

  22. Abhi: Don’t feel threatened by Ravi the “Young Turk”. This certainly will provide a “different” perspective from a teenager’s point-of-view. We are not getting older, but just wiser. [At least hopefully – some of us !] Ravi: Go break a leg – of course without you or Abhi getting arrested – like Anna said 馃檪

it’s ok, you’re the coolest auntyji i know, anna. 馃槈

sounds like someone with unresolved college acceptance issues

  26. Welcome to Sepia Mutiny, Ravi. Ignore the noise above; its just us folks with nothing much to do this summer except look up SM. As the saying went in Uncle Cookiebrown’s times in desh “less noise from the cheap seats, please”.

  27. Denver has serious lack of Desi’s. Why don’t we turn the DNC into the Desi National Convention. Anyway- San Fran, Chi-town etc always gets the Desi meet-up love. Why not one in my neck of the woods?
