Until I saw this, I had no idea …

…that there was a right and a wrong place to do Bhangra.

According to the Berkeley Bhangra team, there actually are some places one should not do Bhangra [via Manish in response to Vinod, below]:

As well as some places where one should do Bhangra (anywhere anytime at Cal) [via Vinod]:

No wonder people looked at me funny when I busted out my best dance moves at TraderJoes …

  1. Those guys have gulab jamans the size of boulders. At Dhol Di Awaz last night, the Berkeley team showed yet another “where not to bhangra”, and included is footage of them being detained on the Golden Gate Bridge and at Lombard Street. For dancing. Seems like SF’s famed embrace of all things Indian, spontaneous, and terpsichorean ended in the 60’s.

  2. Whoa, Union Landing? That’s 5 minutes’ drive from here. That, BART, Westfield, Santana Row…Aww bay sweet bay. Great videos Ennis!

  3. I love those kids like crazy — they are wicked funny, and it looks like they brought back some of their alum (e.g., Baljeet) to help out with the video. DJDP, how was DDA?

Not much different from previous ones. No brawls this year, but no Khalsa Junction either (WTF!). Did you ever perform at DDA with the Berkeley team?

And oh, I ran into another Langar Hall contributer. Small world.

  5. That was lame and repetitive. Some of it was borderline funny…but then it repeats and repeats.

I’m guessing that “gulab jamans” is another term for “cajones,” is it?

  7. The first clip is not too different from the average Bollywood movie where someone/ some people just break into a song and dance for no reason.

  8. In the second clip I love the parts where some of the bystanders join in the dancing. They are just as good as the Bhangra dancers.

DJDP – let us know when they put it up on youtube, and I’ll include it in this post.

Was that detained for real or was that fake detained?

  10. That was a great way to recover from hang over!! hehe….Off I go, doing the Bhangra…..aaaje Soniyee…..aajaa….oyyy..!!1 oh oyyy!!! Thanks for the post…..may be you should have more Sunday special posts like these…

No idea why Khalsa Junction wasn’t there. I d-5idn’t perform with the DDA team — I only danced sporadically in college, and definitely not competitively. Most of my affinity is through my friendships with the DDA organizing committee and our SSA-based friendships.

Not surprising that you ran into a Langar Hall’er — we’re mostly Californian ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyone know the name of the tune that introduces the second video?

It’s “Simon Says” by Pharoahe Monch.

Let’s just say they often come hot and sticky.

The footage was short and interspliced with their “naching” but seemed quite real. A few cops questioned them on on the GG and a squad car intercepted them at the nadir of Lombard. If I find the video, I’ll link to it.

I finally got an answer from a buddy of mine who claims that after pwning fools for the last few years, KJ has basically retired from competitive bhangra. I know that I haven’t shut up about my disappointment in their absence, but I probably wouldn’t have dropped a well-needed Jackson if I knew they wouldn’t be there. That could have paid for a lot of Ramen.

  14. Actually, regarding my post (#14), there is a purpose for the over the top dances and songs in Bollywood films. My husband says it gives viewers a chance to get some chai and take restroom break. I guess they can be entertaining for some people too.

But I love Bhangra! And these guys are good. It’s great exercise and when you do Bhangra, you don’t realize you are getting an excellent workout. You will break a sweat doing it. So these Bhangra dancers are encouraging others to fight the war on obesity that is plaguing the nation by inspiring others to dance. They are actually patriotic heroes!
