Sepia Mutiny Eastside / Westside Road Tour

It’s been way too long since we’ve done meetups in two of the most desi-licious cities in the US. So, mutineer A N N A and I have joined forces to coordinate our travel scheds and bring you the Sepia Mutiny Summer Road Tour – a back to back meetups in NYC & SF.

p>You’d better believe that we’ll do our part to Help Vinay & Sameer at the meetups. Special prizes to anyone else who manages to attend both meetups. And, as usual, we’ll do our best to document the depravity in our flickr group.

  1. I’m thinking of and putting together a list of other places as well but Verlaine is a good pick. They have a happy hour 7 days a week and goes on till 10:00 pm at which point you can clear out and go eat somewhere 🙂 Pegu Club is really nice too on the LES and they will do group reservations and open early enough for you to want to clear it out later. You should give them a call. I’ll think of more.

  2. Puliogre – will you come out again and where your special hat? I adore-a your fedora.

  3. I’m going to TRY to be at these.

With my leg in a cast for the next seven weeks, it will be difficult. I’m far more likely to make the SF meetup than the NYC one, in part because I’m meeting with surgeons in CA; I’m not supposed to be running around, otherwise. 🙁 Going to NY = running around needlessly, according to my dour-but-correct doc.

It’s one thing to fly home and have mom pick me up from the airport and help me get around Northern CA– quite another to schlep to Union Station, then Penn Station, then a cab, all by myself.

Look at the bright side– you probably won’t have me, but you’ll have Manish. We’ll have him wear some shimmer lotion and heels, you won’t be able to tell the difference, promise. 😉

hmm…i can do a fedora. I was thinking i might break out my red and gold turban though. ill leave it up to a vote.

    Fedora Turban

  5. You should only wear a red and gold turban if it’s one of those ready made pop-on ones…

    thats the kind!

  6. We’ll have him wear some shimmer lotion and heels, you won’t be able to tell the difference, promise.

Oh hush. That’s just the day job.

  7. verlaine’s not my favorite place in the neighborhood, but seeing as how it’s practically visible from my apartment window, i don’t have much of an excuse to not be there.

JOAT – i love pegu club, as long as it’s not a weekend, when the place gets much too crowded and the bartenders aren’t able to give the drinks their full attention. (as a new yorker though, i must nit-pick and mention that it’s not on the LES, but rather on the border of soho and the west village.) a few of us ended up at their sister bar, flatiron lounge, on a previous meetup.

depending on the veracity and stamina of everyone’s drinking, i’d be glad to take anyone who’s interested on a tour of the finest watering holes in the hood.

  8. The SF date is 8/26????

That’s the same day as the Matishyahu concert, which is also in SF. In the words of Bat for Lashes, “What’s a girl to do?”

    I’ll try to do both…

  9. this is a ridiculously good line-up for nyc. unfortunately, i might be out of town. but i hope i can make it – i just moved back to ny, so i need some new friends 🙂

  10. Bummer, I’ll be out of town that weekend. Guess my first mutinous SF meet-up will have to wait…

  11. I hope to be there for the SF meetup

ANNA :Hope you feel better soon 🙁 take care

  12. last time an SF meetup came up, i had suggested dosa, for which i was quickly flamed. i hadn’t been there when i suggested it but have gone since. i don’t understand what all the outrage was about. sure, instead of an $8 dosa @ udupi palace, you’re dropping $10.50. is that really such a big deal? i mean the restaurant IS in san francisco. the mysore masala dosa + sambar + chutney i had was pretty decent, better than vik’s in berkeley at times. born and raised kannadiga, so i know my dosas. anyway, just had to put that out there.

  13. San Francisco meetups are always at Caffe Greco. Especially if the gimp is the hostess.

For some readers, believe it or not, dropping that much is a big deal.

  14. How about a London, England meetup?? There are a significant number of readers from across the Pond. Would anyone else be interested in this?

  15. drinks are a minimum of $12/ea so pegu club is definitely out if we’re keeping an eye on cost (and i agree that we should).

Our meetups are always hosted by one or more of the bloggers, which is why in the cases of these two fine cities, it’s been so long. Someone has to be in town for it to happen.

that’s fine. i’m not suggesting we move the venue. just reporting back my unsolicited findings on Dosa. and in regard to the $2.50 price difference, dining in SF in general is expensive as compared to outlying areas. mutineers are always able to come on a full stomach. i try to avoid dropping $4 on lattes when i can help it.

  18. venice beach, huntington beach, laguna beach, downtown la, weho meetup? what else?

  19. Barring some awful twist of fate, I will be there, NYC! I’m excited 🙂

That’s the same day as the Matishyahu concert, which is also in SF. In the words of Bat for Lashes, “What’s a girl to do?”

Dude, how is this at all a conflict of interest? 😉

absolutegcs, I’m not trying to be a jackass (or take this off topic), but I find Dosa’s food to be really really terrible. I also don’t think “Vik’s” is a good comparison sample for Southie food. This is just my opinion; if folks wanted to opt-desi for the SF menu, I think there are about 20 other restaurants that are tastier than Dosa.

  20. absolutegcs, I’m not trying to be a jackass (or take this off topic), but I find Dosa’s food to be really really terrible.

Not a problem, since we’ll be at Greco, where SF meetups are always held.

  21. All are welcome, even trolls, and “inactive” is nothing compared to THAT. 😉 Of course we want to see you there!

  22. It’s summertime. Why not gather outdoors? Throw a picnic in Sheeps’ Meadow in Central Park. You get in free, you get to bring your own food and you can even help out a desi brother by buying Heinekens and Coronas from the perennial Bangladeshi-Uncle hawker. What can be more desi than that? Afterwards you can always traipse downtown. But not to Verlaine. That place is too bridge and tunnel and yes the contempt is intended. The basements of both Lolita and 88 Orchard are much more groovier and you can have them all to yourself.

  23. I know that Caffe Greco is a beloved spot, but is there any chance of a more central location? Parking in North Beach is the suck and for me, public transport to that neighborhood is no picnic either. (OK, maybe I did get rockstar parking right outside last time, but still).

Don’t know if it’s possible for you, but people did carpool last time…picked each other up from Bart, etc.

    Sigh…how I love living a mile away!! 🙂

  26. hmm, i guess i never thought of carpooling. either that or i will bring a nice, long book for MUNI!
