Shalini Sparkles on “The Lot”

Okay, not sure how many of you are watching Fox’s kinda awful reality show “The Lot” right now, but I have to say, I’m actually glad I am. One of you let us know that our girl Shalini is up this week. This time, Shalini had to make a comedy, in just five days. Since she’s more of a documentary/serious filmmaker, this quite understandably freaked her out. However, once I saw the montage of her having trouble directing her short and then heard one of her actors disparage her, I knew she must have done a brilliant job, since that’s how transparent these stupid shows are.

Shalini’s film is called “Dr-in-law” and it made me do that “LOL”-thing those whippersnappers are always exclaiming. It really is funny– and extra awesome because the two main characters are both Asian…and neither of them are the doctor. I don’t require it, but if I can see myself in or otherwise relate to a piece of art, it’s that much more precious. Somewhere, a put-upon brown kid dreams of doing what she shot. 😉

Anyway, when the show is over, it will be time to vote– and if I’m not mistaken, there is just a two hour window after “The Lot” airs in your time zone in which to do so. Shalini went first, so her phone number will end in “01” (and isn’t that fortuitous? I always feel like numbers ending in “01” are superior, but I’m fobulous like that)…but who uses a phone these days, if there’s a way to do something online? What, you like your phone? Fine, dial 1-88-The Lot-01.

Some of us may be skeptical about Shalini’s skills, but compare her work to second, third and fourth the rest of the films in the competition (which, except for the last one, were all kinds of lame), and it’s hard to dismiss her talent; I found myself cheering at the TV repeatedly for the brown girl in the ring. It’s also hard to dismiss her glittery make-up, which inspired the title of this post. Feel free to discuss it (or her film, even) below.

  1. I tried to watch it but reality shows just irk me but I hope that she wins or the brother.

  2. Doug, I hear you. That’s why I took one for the Mutiny. 😉

The last film (Die Hardly Working by Zach Lipovsky) was also really cute. There you have it. Funny films bookending poo in between. I voted and I hope she makes it to next week…er…two weeks from now? This is the most poorly-organized reality show, ever. Here’s hoping she…um…doesn’t get eliminated! Ah, that works.

  3. anna, come on. it’s not awful. poorly organized, sure.

varieties of ideas in the form of short films in under an hour? that makes for a great show.

anywho, i was hoping you would remind all to vote. i already did for shalini about seven times. i hope she sticks around for a while.

I said “kinda” awful, didn’t I? 😀 It is poorly organized and rather annoying, but I still wish people would watch it. That’s why I put up a post.

Look at the first line of the post! I even provided the link, to make it uber-easy. 🙂

  5. a little crass if you ask me, and if you’re gonna go crass, go all the way. I was expecting a better payoff at the end with the motivated zoom, like the old man actually speaking english, as if he wanted it all along. That would have been funny.

  6. a little crass if you ask me, and if you’re gonna go crass, go all the way

Au contraire, mon frere…that was some of the most dignified ASS humor I’ve ever seen. 😉 I thought it went far enough. I was happy with it.

  7. what does she get if she wins????

    This:

The show, which airs on FOX, features filmmakers competing in weekly elimination competitions, with the ultimate prize of a million dollar development deal at DreamWorks. [wiki]

oops thought that “glad you did remind all to vote” was implied.

i always check if you blogged or not after each show’s end.

  9. Thanks for voting! Remember, you can vote as many times as you like within your vote window

Thats what it says – OK, fellas. I ll check in 2 hours to see your count.

That’s kinda my point. it’s sort of like what maxim is to porn (there’s an analogy which I’m sure you’ll have noooo problem penetrating.. 😉 ), stradling a line, neither here nor there.

  11. Her video is certainly not the worst of the lot. That honor falls squarely to How to Have a Girl or Under the Gun. The others at least had some inspired moments to them, although Zach Lipovsky certainly seems strong at comedy, given his initial entry.

    I like HMF’s suggested ending.

  12. Anna I am glad you took that for the tean, anyway can you give me the link to vote.I love reading the word poo it makes me chuckle.

  13. who was smoking crack tonight — me or garry marshall? korean subtitles????

OMG, I thought the same thing…”THAT was Korean? What, all sound same??”

  14. that was most definitely NOT korean — i’m a little sad shalini didn’t correct him!

  15. that was most definitely NOT korean — i’m a little sad shalini didn’t correct him!

I was sad, too…then I thought of how it probably wasn’t a good idea to piss off the judges, even if it would be righteous.

  16. I happened to catch the show and Shalini’s piece did make me chuckle. That Zach’s story had no arc. It depended too much on sound effects. Maybe i have a soft spot for my desi sister – but her piece somehow seems so much more human.
