DC: Brunch Meetup THIS Sunday? [UPDATED]

sepia brunch.jpg

We’ve had some rough times in the bunker…when Manish and Vinod first broke up…when Ennis was told he couldn’t smuggle anymore adoring groupies in and pass them off as interns…when Manish and Vinod broke up again…when the lemurs went on strike to protest the lack of parties…when one of our guest bloggers developed a very rare allergic reaction to…ah, never mind.

My point is, what we faced before were minor challenges; this has been a rather difficult week, as we confronted far more sobering matters, which affected us all. This week, we dealt with real pain, as tragedy reminded us of how fleeting life actually is. Such “big news” always means more traffic, which means more moderating and more possibilities for this or worse, this.

So, I’m a little down right now and I know many of you are, too. This is what I propose to lift our sepia spirits: an eleventh-hour sort of meetup at reliable and hospitable Heritage India this weekend. Perhaps what this community needs is…more community. Let’s bond, y’all! You know you want to. All are welcome: trolls, lurkers, smurfs and elves included. Vogons, however, will not be tolerated, since it’s highly possible that they might be feeling poetic and no one deserves that.

We can do brunch like we did the first time we were there, at the third DC Meetup or we can have dinner like we did the last time we were there, at the fourth DC meetup which was also our first-ever SM Channukah extravaganza. No, that wasn’t convoluted at all. 😉 The more significant issue is that we haven’t met up in FOUR MONTHS.

Dinner on Saturday, April 21 at 8ish

or

Brunch on Sunday, April 22 at Noonish it is!

Either way, I feel like it is an apposite time to revisit Heritage; I’ve had a sad sort of craving for Golgoppas and I’d like to sate that, in memory of someone else who loved them.

FYI: Heritage is Metro accessible (Red line).

  1. Would a newbie be welcomed?

I’d be skipping a good hike … but golgappas do sound tempting 🙂

  2. This has nothing to do with anything, but I love the picture of the chaiBook 🙂

(Although the inner worry wart in me is whispering, “Keep the chai at least a foot away from the computer!)

  3. Great, plan a meet for the weekend I’m planning to be in NYC. Maybe next time I can come swing from the ceiling fans with the rest of you cacas.

  4. Would a newbie be welcomed?

I will take the liberty of responding on behalf of our hostess with the most … the answer is YES! All are welcome! Well, except for Vogons. But everyone else is welcome, and will be welcomed!!! A N N A will hug you! She may even put her feet on you!

  5. i can attest for the seldom-commenting but frequent readers: as opinionated and direct these guys are on the blog, in person they’re very chill and accepting. you can utter whatever stupid thought that comes to your mind and no one will think the less of you (well, almost no one..). i’ve been to a couple of the meetups and always have a good time. the last time i had one too many black on the rocks and had a really good time..

  6. I can attest to the daal makhani being especially delicious. I think I also remember mayur’s introduction story at the December meetup…especially interesting! 😛

  7. While on the topic of meet-ups, when will we have our first Texas meet up?

May 18th weekend. Stay tuned. It’s going to be hotter than the Rodeo.

  8. And there will probably be a Chicago meetup in the next few weeks too. I noticed that there were a lot of graduate students at the last meetup, so I wanted to hold one before the semester ended and people went off to do their engineering coops or whatever …

  9. I would be happy to co-host with Siddhartha. Or host by myself if the Ill Hindu is out of town/occupied/ill etc.

He always ill. That why he name be Ill-Hindu.

  10. JUST CAUGHT THIS!

    I’m in. I’m in! I’m in!

Ahhh, Lizzie m’dear, I’ll be there with proverbial bells on. And AJP, thanks a shiznitload for putting this together. I’ve felt the need, but didn’t want to whine about it, so thanks for reading my mind.

    Sunday it is!

    tapping fingers together exxxcellent…

  11. Hello folks, long time lurker here. I think a DC meetup is a great idea, and I would love to attend. It’s just that I’m a bit…shy, because I don’t know anyone who’s going to be there! Does that make me a bad person? 🙂

  12. May 18th weekend. Stay tuned. It’s going to be hotter than the Rodeo.

    Awesome!

  13. Mr. Wise, my partner and I will be new too, not knowing anyone and never having been to a meetup before. Come anyway – we’ll be new together. 🙂

  14. Fantastic– looks like we’re going to have a great crowd for brunch. 🙂

Mayur– Show up at 3. 😉

  15. Hello Lizzie…nice to see there’s somebody else like me who’s going to be attending as well..Yup, let’s all be new together! I don’t know, but Anna might need a headcount in order to make a reservation or something. In that case, please count me in! 🙂

  16. Okay, mutineers…we have reservations for TWELVE…at twelve. 🙂 This doesn’t mean that if you haven’t RSVP’d, you cannot come– please do. That’s the beauty of brunch, right? I just wanted to make sure that we had an area where we’d all be together.

Also, we’ll almost surely be going somewhere else after brunch, so if you think you’re free later, you are more than welcome to come chill (ahem. MAYUR.). 🙂 We will be at Heritage until around 2:30. Last time, the meetup went for over six hours, in three locations (Heritage/Cosi/Tryst).

Suitablegirl at gmail, if you need my cell.

  17. Have fun, y’all!

Anna, please hug a random person twice – (s)he’ll represent me in the flesh 🙂

  18. FYI – your directions/address blurb at the end of the blog post (not comments) still lists 8 pm. A cut-paste from the last meetup, perchance?

Also, FYI, I’ll attempt to show up, if I’m not to grimy after a mid-morning bike ride! (yeah – skipped the hike idea)

  19. Salil I see your 4 PORN’s and one PRON and raise PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN and PRON and PRON.

Did you find water street allrite?

  20. Really, Salil.

    You shouldn’t be yelling PORN.

For one thing, there are no small children present.

And for another, you should be yelling “SNUFF PORN!!” anyway.

  21. After the conversation they heard, I’m sure those children had an interesting discussion with their parents.

  22. Yes, it was definitely a great meetup! I had loads of fun meeting all you nice people, and I would like to thank Anna and everybody else for making it a day to remember!! Porn for one, porn for all! 😉

  23. Anna, you looked luminous. And you made me feel like such a slob. What did someone at the other end of the table say “breakfast at tiffany’s?” Brava. The food was excellent. You did a great job of making everyone feel special with your “inappropriate” hugs which were anything but. First, I thought you knew everyone you were hugging because you were so sincere and happy to see them, then when I realised you had never met them! I had a great time. Thanks for hosting us and I hope you do so again soon.

Oh, and yes. Porn. There was much porn. ;o)

  24. Ah, but Jay, death-by-A N N A is better than death by any other thing. You missed your chance to get snuffed with style, my friend.

An excellent meetup…and Lizzie m’dear, I did find Water St. in short order thanks to the miracle that is my car computer (don’t ask) and spent a happy hour on Dave’s boat, enjoying the weather before running off to DCA to catch the 7:35pm USAir to Greensboro again.

Good times, good times. Meetups make my week better.

Ummm, I think I asked the question.

I demand that you drive the G35 to Florida WITH A Feng Shui book to make up for this. Your time starts now.

  26. D’ohh!

In my defense, the two comments were one right after the other.

But you’re right, that’s no excuse. To make amends, I promise to mispronounce “Karthik” every chance I get.

    Wait, no, that’s not right…

  27. Oh I’m so sad I missed it! Damn final papers! No excuse I know…I’ve been a Sepia lurker for a bit and now I can’t wait to meet all of you. I’ll definitely make the next DC meetup…you’ll see me, I’ll be the white girl humming Kehna Hi Kya to herself all night… 😉

  28. It took me long enough to respond, but I now no longer spend my day reading blogs online! Thanks for organizing the meet up, ANNA. It was nice to meet everyone, and worth the drive down! And, since no one’s mentioned it yet, those little kids will be having sweet sweet dreams thanks to – does that vulgar hand/ass motion

  29. thanks for organizing the meetup Anna…but i have one question…where is the promised write-up?

from Sunny to Clorox, I think we ran the gamut of brown-influenced smut. Surely there’s more than enough material for a post.
