Cricket: No Play and Yet, He’s Not Salty

Wot’s this?? Apparently, boycandy Sreesanth will not be part of India’s opening line-up at the World Cup (damn you, Khan, Agarkar and Patel…damn you all!).
My Baby Daddy Sreesanth.jpg

Paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth looks likely to miss out on a starting place for the World Cup but said that could be the best thing to happen for him.
…”I like it this way,” he said at a team net practice near Port-of-Spain on Wednesday. “I like to struggle and get something rather than get it easily. I’m sure I will get the opportunity.”[Reuters]

I dig a good chase too, but if my sweet little neyyappam ain’t playin’, suddenly, I am way less inspired to impersonate Mandira Bedi poorly. Many of you might recall that my fling with Cricket commenced with a post which celebrated Sreesanth’s glorious obnoxiousness towards Andre Nel:

After hearing about Mallu hotness Sreesanth (thanks, DTK), I had to visit ye olde YouTube to find out about this right-arm fast-medium-pace bowler, who is a right-handed tailender. Apparently, excessively lippy South African Andre Nel questioned Sreesanth’s heart/courage/skillz after Sreesanth evaded something called a bouncer. Sreesanth responded by hitting Nel for a six and then performing a dance I’d normally associate with an end zone. Oh, that was just brutal to write. I can’t imagine how many men I’ve just annoyed. 😉
I may not know a damned thing about what is arguably the most popular sport in all of South Asia, but I know the art of trash talk well and if anything could get me to fall in love with this very Brown game, it’s the video I’ve posted…[SM, biatches!]

Sigh. And we have so much in common, too:

Sreesanth, 24, one of India’s new crop of pacemen, has impressed with his spirit and wicket-taking abilities which won him Cup selection despite being expensive in one-dayers.[Reuters]

Hello??? I am too expensive for one-nighters! TOTAL SIMILARITY, I think.

Also this:

His natural aggression has caught the imagination of Indian fans since his debut against England in late 2005.[Reuters]

…sounds familiar, too. I’m naturally aggressive and I’ve caught the imagination of many Indian fans…though all of them are male…and for some reason, they’re way more in to my Flickr than my blog. Hmmm. I need to chew on my hair while I like, ponder this…wow, my conditioner smells fab. Wait what was I typing? Ah yes, I was discussing the kid who shares my nick:

The Kerala player was confident he would gain from his past Caribbean experience at the World Cup.
“I was lucky to play all the matches here last year,” he said. “One big lesson I learnt was to be patient, wait for the wickets to come rather than go looking for them.[Reuters]

I concur. The same philosophy has served me well; for example, I patiently wait for sales to come rather than go looking for them…and I nearly always score.

“It is not enough at this level to just run in fast.”[Reuters]

Enough talking darling, you’re ruining it for me. 😉 And stop with the fakakta highlights already, would you? You look better with dark hair. Oy, I sound like my Amma…thankfully, since she does not read blogs, she’ll never learn that and use it against me. 😀

  1. I am quite sure India will win the match…the Bangladeshi batting order isn’t too great. I only wish they could have done it with more style.

I dont think so, there is Mohammad Ashraful, one of the world class batsmans in recent times.

  2. Banglas are 67-1

India fans, pray for a Pakistan humiliation to at least salvage some good news on a day like this.

  3. Bangladesh have played brilliantly. You have to give them respect. Where is Taz?? Taz your boys are teaching India a lesson!

  4. I don’t think Bangladesh win would be a fluke.. they beat Australia, New Zealand recently. Indians deserve to loose this match. But India at least has some chance to make it to the next round. If Pakistan looses they are out of tournament

  5. great innings from tamim. shame i have to cheer his dismissal, but i have to!

“India fans, pray for a Pakistan humiliation to at least salvage some good news on a day like this.”

no, we need to meet to have a chance to continue our dominance of pakistan in world cups. we need to salvage some pride 🙂 win or lose, this match isn’t going to do it.

  6. Iqbal is only 17??? and he was charging down to Khan and Patel..I wish I could actually SEE him play

  7. Whose God is it anyways?

Dude, if Pakistan are kicked out of the World Cup by losing to Ireland, it will be the most humiliating result in one day history. If they go down they are out of the tournament. Take your bragging rights when you can! At least India will lose (if they lose!) to a test side. We are talking Ireland here. IRELAND!!

And India just got another wicket. 79-3. It’s not over.

  8. red snapper,

given our current performance, you’re probably right! still, it sticks in my craw a bit to say “go ireland.” it’s just really hard and cruel to wish that on pakistan. and what goes around might come around:) although if we lose to bangladesh and sri lanka, not sure if the fans back home are going to care whether bangladesh is a test team and ireland isn’t (given the rage last time when we lost badly to australia, the top team by far). if both india and pakistan go out in the first round, i would suggest they stay on for an extended holiday in the west indies instead of going home.

  9. far from being over, I think the conditions may explain some of the indian batting….the top of the indian order can’t be as bad as that…. Bangladesh may have a hard time batting as well

  10. Ireland is now 14/1 out out in 3.5 overs. Bangladesh (94/3 out) needs 98 runs to win

  11. “Ireland 15 for 2 — looks like Pakistan are going to make a game of it”

who would have thought you’d actually see this line in the world cup?

  12. 114/3. And just think, Bangladesh accidentally brought their under-19 squad to the tournament.

  13. I need someone to hold me 🙁

Awww, hug. I can do that, since my ignorance protects me from appreciating why you so need it. 🙂

  14. Ireland 41 for 2 (13.1 overs)

If Pakistan lose they are out of the tournament. Repeat: out of the tournament. Unbelieveable.

Bangadesh need 58 runs to win.

    What a day of cricket.

  15. What a day of cricket.

Some bookie somewhere (in India ofcourse) is RICH !@@@!! and some poor schmuck is going to lose a lot of money on the bets. If the matches (both Ind-Bangla and Pak-Ire) are fixed than some players are going to be RICH too. Damn! my doubting mind 🙂 I can understand Bangladesh as they have some Internation experience but Ireland ??

  16. I sincerely doubt if there’s any match-fixing involved. Surely they’re not foolish enough to face the wrath of angry fans back home? It can get pretty physical.

Pakistan and India have played their version of self goal (which BTW may have been a fix). I certainly hope the players escape Andres Escobar’s fate. We Desis are just as crazy.

Stay tuned for bizarre reactions. It’s going to get interesting.

  17. Bangladesh, 168/4 out, 24 runs to win, looks like Bangladesh is going to win this match.

  18. There is about to be a massive power-surge across the sub-contient as millions of TV sets are simultaneously switched off.

    Guardian’s commentary is brilliant!

  19. 15 to win in 38 balls, with five wickets in hand, a sure victory for Bangladesh, thanks to brilliant Iqbal

  20. the prospect of the Pakistani reaction to an early exit is actually quite terrifying.

A N N A, that is why I need someone to hold me. Add to that the riots in India, I cannot even imagine

  21. Add to that the riots in India,

To say nothing of the ones in Pakistan over the Chief Justice affair! Yeah, if Pakistan lose, it’s going to get serious.

  22. Bangladesh have beaten one of the very best batting line-ups of all time with a team composed largely of kids.

    yup…and thats it

  23. good lord! congrats to bangladesh – they outplayed india in every area and more importantly, had the better attitude. they thoroughly deserve this win. this is probably one of the most spineless, lackadaisical performances from india that i’ve seen.

why did dravid take tendulkar off and bring back bhajji and the fast bowlers. why weren’t yuvraj, tendulkar and sehwag or ganguly tried earlier during the malaise from 77-3 to 150-plus for 3? why do they wait for the ball to fall into their hands instead of diving or moving towards the ball? why did they just let the singles leak like that?

  24. why was our fielding so shambolic? why was dravid chewing his fingernails instead of lighting a fire under the guys? why was yuvraj yawning? at least kaif and gautam gambhir at robin uthappa’s position might have save some runs.

wow, now pakistan may go out on duckworth-lewis! raining in jamaica.

  25. why do they wait for the ball to fall into their hands instead of diving or moving towards the ball? why did they just let the singles leak like that?

The post-mortem begins! I’ve only been following it over the web, but it really does look like even aggressive fielding in the last few overs by India could have held Bangladesh. With such an experienced side, India have only themselves to blame.

  26. Bangladesh defeated India as I hoped for. And Ireland should defeat Pakistan soon. What happens if it continues to rain? Can Pakistan stay in the tournament with a tie? A great day in cricket for the Davids.

  27. if it continues to rain, pakistan out. there is a reserve rain day for each match at this wc, but if the second innings has gone beyond 20 overs (now in 27th for ireland) then if rain washes out play, it goes on D-L. if they manage to play again today and tie,, then they have a chance by winning their next match against zimbabwe (who tied with ireland)

india was only aggressive in its ennui

  28. Can someone let me know…how badly does this impact India’s chances?

Am I correct in assuming that, if we lose against Sri Lanka now(a v v real possibility), we’d most probably be out?

  29. how badly does this impact India’s chances

There are two scenarios assuming Bermuda loses all three matches.

    a) Bangladesh beats Sri Lanka. India just needs to beat Sri Lanka to move to Super-8 as the second team from the group. They carry 0 points forward though.

    b) Sri Lanka beats Bangladesh. India still needs to beat Sri Lanka, but that does not guarantee qualification. All three teams finish with 4 points and net run-rate comes into play. Sri Lanka had a head start as they thrashed Bermuda by 243 runs. India and Bangladesh will need to do something similiar.

  30. Can someone say whats happening to the Pakistan-Ireland match because of the rain? How are the scores going to be affected, if they are going to be affeced at all?

  31. pakistan and ireland are playing again. target reduced to 128 runs from 47 overs. ireland on 98-4

  32. I heard there is someone in effigy business here. Can you take my order for 11 of those please! 🙁

  33. The Irish win with a six. One for the ages!

I know, one more chalked to ‘The Luck of the Irish’ – plus it’s on St Patrick’s Day! On the other hand, who would be watching in Ireland itself, given that?

  34. The Irish have a huge, virally exuberant crowd. The most carnivalesque atmosphere today.
