DC Meetup MADNESS

I’m so sorry that I’ve been Arular lately, but I promise that New York (as much as I adore it) won’t be the only Sepia city to get mutinous, especially after the glee-inducing events of this past week. I mean…come on…this victory was all about chocolate, not apples. 😉 Besides, I won’t be able to attend the New York meetup and I want to celebrate just as much as Siddhartha and Vinod do. 226622742_b0a003c568_m.jpg

I was originally going to propose something different: a meetup/workshop hybrid which would oocur at some cafe as we wrote and read 55s…sort of a mash-up of the Kahani writing gatherings I used to host and our regular SM melas. But, I think that after Tuesday’s triumph of relatively-good over the most-fumbled-cammpaign ever, zimbly hanging out and laughing our kundis off (which we did at the last DC meetup, pictured left) might be a more apposite goal.

So, while I don’t mind getting together Saturday night for potentially scandalous debauchery (especially if it ends in the wee hours with cheese-veggie-burgers at Fuddruckers), I’m wondering if Sunday afternoon will work for more of you?

How about brunch at Heritage India Dupont, on Sunday at 1pm?

Heritage India is near the blue/orange/red lines and it’s bang in the middle of everything, so if we’re having fun, we can sluggishly waddle off somewhere else after being sated by the best ma ki dal in DC. Brunch is served until 2:30pm, so IST can be slightly accomodated. 🙂 RSVP in the comments below, so I can make reservations tomorrow, y’heard?

:+:

If you can’t eat the cutest aloo tikki EVER with us at Heritage this weekend (trust me, the presentation always delights), consider partying with us a month from now, during Sepia Mutiny’s first-ever Hanukkah meetup, on December 16. This could be the meetup to trump all meetups because…1) It will take place at the sublime, gorgeous and flawless Rasika, one of Esquire magazine’s 20 Best New Restaurants in America.

2) We’re all going to wear our finest desi clothes. Iron that kanjeevaram, dig up your favorite lengha and find that sherwani your cousin made you buy for his wedding, which you didn’t think you’d get to use again. This is the Mutiny’s first holiday party and I want you to glitter as much as the fantastic setting.

Can you picture it? Sepia lovelies in silk, the chime of bangles as crystal flutes are raised and the food…my goodness, you should come, just to try the bhindi and the saag. At YoDad’s request, Msichana showed up to the last DC meetup looking luminous in a sari which fought the sunset for that night’s “Best use of Pinks and Purples”-award, so you may thank her for inspiring this request for your best dress. How down are you with looking brown? 🙂

  1. why do you have to show us pictures of such beautiful women when i’ve finally become ok with that “its just not going to happen for me” to find an indian girl?

  2. I might be able to make it on Sunday, I’m in Virginia and will be leaving on Sunday morning. If not, I’m in for the Dec. meetup.

  3. Oh yeah. I’m in.

Now where are the rest of the local brownz? It’s two hours in, and we’re up to…three? Is it because it’s Friday?

And should we come up with a VA plan for Saturday night, too? AJP, I expect it might wind up at Fudruckers, or possibly Crystal City Kabob, which is right up there in terms of late night eateries.

  4. Okay, so brunch: Sriram (maybe), Salil, Kenyandesi, me, Prashant…

DTK? This brunch is NOT in NoVa, so I’m expecting you. 😉

Who else? Cinnamon Rani? Msichana? Umang?

  5. I am also in for the december meetup. unfortunately I reach NYC on 23rd nov so wont be able to make it to any of the meetups before that…

  6. have not been to a SM meetup. but am in d.c. this weekend. am i welcome or is this a private rendezvous? if so, there may be 3 of us…

  7. How sad, I have guests over this weekend! I wish I could just leave them and join you guys, but they are my mum’s friends and she will KILL me. But at this momen tit looks like will be at the Dec 16 holiday party at the lovely Rasika! I’ll be there with bells on! 🙂

SM Meetups are NEVER “private”. You and your friends are more than welcome to attend! Looking forward to meeting you. 🙂

No need to leave them– bring ’em. If they’re that important, shouldn’t you show them the best of DC? 😉

  9. She didn’t call for backup (she’s Anna, when does she NEED backup?) but here it is anyway:

Every SM meetup I’ve been to, I’ve met tons of people who have never been. The semi-nervousness evaporates about 33 seconds into the first story told about how stupid / goofy / ridiculous someone (ususally myself) (or maybe Vinod) is, particularly when they (meaning me) (and sometimes Vinod) are drunk.

Then we proceed to get drunk.

It’s sort of a self-perpetuating cycle, but it seems to work for everyone.

  10. Thanks, SJM! 😀

DTK? This brunch is NOT in NoVa, so I’m expecting you. 😉

…ask and I shall receive: DTK just RSVP’d.

  11. how did i not hear about this impromptu dc meetup? count me in (hopefully). i’m still kicking myself for being a no-show at the last one..

  12. count me in (hopefully). i’m still kicking myself for being a no-show at the last one..

what is this hopefully bakwas? i’m going to kick you if you’re a no-show this time.

  13. Wow, thats like in 23 hours?

I almost missed the details of tomorrow thinking of december’s event. I’ll be in with a cool macacatner-in-crime 🙂

  14. Wow, thats like in 23 hours?

Yes. That’s why it’s not a sin to feverishly F5 the mutiny– no one wants to miss anything. 😉

  15. Nervous first-timer here. Sick this weekend, ready to party by the time Hannukah rolls around. Though I might not bust out the kanjeevaram, I do like donning a festive glittery sari every now and then.

P.S. I also enjoyed the ‘Arular’ reference.

  16. Nervous first-timer here.

I promise we don’t bite…well, THEY don’t. Me on the other hand… 😉 Seriously, everyone is similarly shy and that evaporates almost immediately. The best thing about this blog is how consistently wonderful people who congregate here turn out to be in real life. I’m reminded of this at every meetup.

Oh, that’s too bad. Get well soon (and if you get well by tomorrow, feel free to crash)– I’m adding you to the list of VIPs who’ve RSVP’d for December 16. 🙂

P.S. I also enjoyed the ‘Arular’ reference.

    Awww, thanks!

  17. Anna: As I remember if I had not reminded, MsIchana would not have put on that beautiful light blue sari on your last meetup here in DC. This time around I guess you have sold the idea to all the ladies. Make sure you take lots of pictures and post them. On a such a short notice it seems like you are going to have a great brunch. Not that Abhi could, or has “forbidden” me to attend one of these meetup – without him present – but me and Abhi’s Mom are busy with few guests this weekend. May be in December! Have fun !

  18. Well, it looks like I’ll be able to make it but I’ll be there about 1:45 or 2…does that stretch beyond IST?

Excellent point, oh Grandfather of the Mutiny. I shall amend this post accordingly. 😉

This time around I guess you have sold the idea to all the ladies. Make sure you take lots of pictures and post them.

I think I have! 😀 And no worries, I will, but I want to clarify one thing– I’m asking everyone to wear desi clothes in DECEMBER. If someone wears them to brunch tomorrow, that’s just a delicious sort of bonus. 🙂

PLEASE come to the December/Holiday meetup with YoMom! With you two starring in my production, it’ll be the BEST MEETUP EVER!

  20. Well, it looks like I’ll be able to make it but I’ll be there about 1:45 or 2…does that stretch beyond IST?

You should be okay. 🙂 From what I was told, we have to order by 2ish, b/c the kitchen closes around then, but after that, it’s chill, we can hang out and eat. Just keep me posted– if I have to, I’ll read you the menu and order for you. 😉 Can’t wait to see you!

  21. I’m so disappointed – I’m fighting off a stomach bug this weekend and don’t see any way that I can be presentable by tomorrow afternoon. I’m new to the DC area, and was kinda hesitantly awaiting a meetup here. poop.

And I hardly ever get a chance to wear a sari! I hope I’m well enough in December.

  22. Lizzie,

I will venture that fully 40% of attendees will be hungover, so you will only be diffrentiated by the degree of contagion you arrive with. Sniffling, red-eyes, hacking cough, etc. on a Sunday morning are to be expected with this carousing crowd of rabble-rousers. Present company excepted, of course. I was DD last night, and so confined my intake to:

    1. a jack and coke
    2. a diet coke.
    3. a glass of water.

And yet somehow, I still feel kind of beat up. My liver has vacated the premises.

    See y’all in a few. AJP, I am arriving +2, I believe.

  23. Salil – Thanks for making me feel welcome despite my not being in the bloom of health – I’m sure your liver and my stomach would have lots to talk about. But being sick the past 3 days means that I had to ask for an extension on a midterm, and it has to be done by tomorrow. So 1 part contagion + 2 parts grad school = Lizzie’s staying in today. But have fun y’all!

  24. God, I am hating it. Left my car last night at a friends place miles away, gosh I never missed my car so much!!

  25. Aaargh….I didnt read this post until a few hours ago when Sriram left me a voice mail about it. (thanks man!)

However…I am SO down for Dec 16th. I’m going to start ironing out the sari already! Cannot wait!!

  26. I hope someone got the mango chicken at Heritage; it is 12 kinds of yummy. Wish I could have been there, but had to be NYC this weekend, and then when the NYC meetup happens next weekend, I will be in DE (with a Republican friend :-P). Know that I celebrate along with all macacas. By the way, since the etymology of “macaca” as an insult to a particular group never has been fully established, I’m happy to adopt it as “stupid non-Indian guy’s attempt to insult an Indian, reclaimed for our community” type word, like “queer” for LGBT folks.

  27. We’re lurkers, finally emerging from the purdah. We’d like to join you tomorrow, so you can expect two demure desi damsels (but not in distress).
