Chicago meetup 10/28? [Was 10/21]

<

p>

I saw this in the window during my last trip to Chicago.

I know it’s short notice, but I just looked at my calendar and realized that I will be gone most of November, and that if we were going to hold a meetup in Chicago in 2006, this Saturday is probably the best bet. [The Saturday after is a possibility if this Saturday is a really bad idea]

So, are people still interested in a Chicago meetup? I can’t promise the luminous Anna or any of the other mutineers, it would be just me and well, all y’all lovely people. Which honestly, is enough for me

If so, when and where? On Devon? [I’ve never been] If so, where? In one of the desi eateries? Or one of the Jewish ones? [Ooooh – are there any good South Indian places up there?] Somewhere else? The Loop? Lincoln Park? Tentatively, I was thinking 2-3 in the afternoon to meet.

Holler at me, folks. Tell me what your favorite places are, and if you can make it at all and I’ll update accordingly. [If nobody can make it, or if nobody is interested, then we’ll simply punt]

UPDATE: I’ve moved the date up one week because of Diwali. Will that work better for most of you?s

  1. It’s not so cold right now. Actually Seattley – temps in the 50s, but overcast. Not yet frozen kundi time, but yeah, that’s why I’m trying to do it now rather than in Dec – Feb …

  2. Isn’t Oct. 21st diwali?

I’m clueless here. Would that make it a very bad day for a meetup, if it is, or a good one?

Bad day. But at least y’all have the option of seeing other desis on Diwali. I know it’s just Monday, but I’m about to cry thinking of how lonely I’m going to be this Saturday 🙁

  4. I can make it on Saturday too. But, I won’t be able to stay for long. May be you should postpone it till after November. They are many, many warm places in Chi-town in December.

  5. I am free! And bienvenido to my lovely city! There are MANY places we can go! There are 2 delightful South Indian restaurants on Devon Street (Udupi Palace and Mysore Woodlands) as well as other great veg/non-veg places for you carnivorous types. (There are many not-so-great places too.) If Devon is too much of a hike, there is always India House downtown, with an incredible humongous menu. There’s also a super-spicy Indian restaurant in Lincoln Park called Hema’s Kitchen. Of course there are so many hang-out loungey places too if we’re not interested in just eating. However, I am always interested in eating, so obviously that is my preference.

I’m excited!! I hope this works out! And if we postpone until next weekend or even after November…I should still be here, though the weekends are a little rough because I’ll be flying around for residency interviews. Yes. That’s right. We’re all going to plan our schedules around moi.

  6. Slightly off-topic, October 22nd is the Chicago Marathon – any mutineers running in that. I will be. Could try to make to the meet-up on Saturday as well.

  7. So I count 4 thus far – Ashvin, Rupa, Chi-diva, and BongoP’o’ndit – despite the diwali-ing (or maybe because of it, people who live too far from home). More takers?

  8. Would love to come as a lurker since the beginning, but I’m only going to be in Chicago the following weekend!

  9. Can’t make it – but I second Mysore Woodlands for top-notch South Indian food. If you’re up for the wait, try Tiffin – the swankiest place on Devon.

As far as Hema’s Kitchen – the only item I liked there were the keema-filled samosas. The rest was forgettable.

  10. It is nice to see the Mutiny spread to the great Heartland! While the meetup may not be numerous, I hope it will be mutinous. We heartlanders must settle for smaller numbers, and a resignation that we will not be able to wait in joyful anticipation of a Pardesi Gori sighting 🙂 (The links are to articles by a French person settled in India. No actual connection implied)

Just curious – how many folks from Austin out here?

  11. Screw Devon. I’m suggesting Raj Darbar on Halsted.
Site of the infamous IndianDating.com speed dating adventure.

  12. Yes, I’ll most probably be available the next weekend also. (Though this weekend is preferable).

  13. Yes, pencil me in!

I vote for the south indian restaurants in Devon too…they are too yummy! But, any place downtown is fine with me too.

  14. Rupa, clearly not allowed. You have to regale us with stories of speed dating. Otherwise, I’ll just have to tell your stories for you, and you’ll be too embarassed to ever set foot on Devon again 😉

  15. Noooo! I’ve been waiting for a Chicago meet-up forever…but of course for the few weekends that I’m gone, there’s a meetup! Oh well. Have fun for all those who attend. I also recommend Udupi and Mysore. And..I expect a write-up and some pics!

  16. OH- and a good place to meet up:

    India House Restaurant 59 W Grand Ave Chicago, IL 60610 (312) 645-9500

Good food – and great buffet.

  17. yes, meetup in hotlanta this friday… at my fave indian place… i just got takeout from there a few minutes ago… if you want to come puhhleeze let me know as i have already gave them a tentative headcount.. (they are packed on friday nights)

happy diwali to all (my most favorite holiday….)

  18. meetup in hotlanta this friday

Sounds like fun…alas I will be “visiting” another major midwestern metro area this weekend, much to my chagrin.

  19. Unfortch, I’m spending the week in Iowa to finish up my research and will probably stay through the weekend to spend Halloween there with my friends 🙁 I am sorry! Everyone will surely hear my speed- and other dating stories another time 🙂

  20. I always read SM from Minneapolis but never have participated. I’ll be in Lincoln Park this (week)end for an interview! Can I come! Am I invited? The desis are so few in my little state… I just want to see a sea of brown.

  21. can we pick a place that’s accessible by train? some of us are poor grad students without cars….
