Devika Mathur- one Righteous sister

devika.jpgWho cares about “tall” desi guys on Amreekan Idol who go on to make us cringe (“Eye of the Tiger“? while pretending to run?)– Canadian Idol shall redeem us!

On June 8, on the third episode of Canadian Idol — the, well, Canadian version of Indian Idol — 2005, Devika was one among 32 contestants given a ticket to the next round to be held in Toronto.

I tripped over that last sentence…I always thought Canadian Idol and its North American cousin were inspired by Britain’s “Pop Idol”. I guess I’m mistaken. Apparently, so is wonderful Wiki:

Canadian Idol is a reality television show on the Canadian television network CTV, based on the popular British show Pop Idol and its US offshoot American Idol.

Hmmm. Well, whatever. The point is, a soulful version of The Righteous Brothers'”Unchained Melody” rocketed Devika Mathur (a.k.a “Rinku”) to the top 32. By the way, the judges love her. Check out this fawning action:

After comments like, ‘Your sense of pitch is fantastic and your sense of artistry is really lovely,’ ‘Your a-capella is unbelievable’ and ‘I don’t think you could be more beautiful if you tried,’ Devika was seen running with delight towards the judges who handed her the ticket.

‘It’s Gold!’ she exclaimed, to which a judge replied, ‘Just like you!’

Our golden girl was a Bombay DJ before she arrived up north as the bride of an Indo-Canadian. She’s still involved with radio; she hosts a weekly show on a “multicultural” station (CMR 101.3 FM) in her new home of Toronto. While I’m not a fan of “Rinku’s” taste in music (her top concert = Whitney “crackhead” Houston), I can totally get behind the book she loves most. I dig her motto, too:

If it weren’t for the last minute nothing would EVER get done!!!

Word. Read more of righteous Rinku’s opinions here. And then tell your Wayne Gretzky-lovin’ hatin’ cousins to support this singer.

Most Canadians I know (or at least the nationalistic hockey fans) have quite the hate-on for Mr. Gretzky.

  2. Who cares about “tall” desi guys on Amreekan Idol

    Being vertically challenged really sucks…..

  3. I’m giong to say this once for all the horndogs. Devika’s Melody is not Unchained. She’s married. Now can you please try and pretend you get out of your mom’s basement and actually interact with women in real life? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. basement and actually interact with women in real life? ๐Ÿ˜‰

…Wait, there are women outside the computer and basement?

  5. Most Canadians I know (or at least the nationalistic hockey fans) have quite the hate-on for Mr. Gretzky.

We do? That’s the first i’ve heard of it. He’s generally presented as a demi-god.

  6. Hating the Gretzky? He’s the greatest hockey player ever and the man who selected and organized the Canadian national team to Olympic vicotry. His taste in clothes (you can buy his line at Sears), women (unsuccessful actress) and cars (Ford?) stinks, but how can you hate the Great One?

Please change back to ‘lovin’. And thanks for the CanCon.

  7. I can totally get behind the book she loves most.

oh thank god it wasn’t Life of Pi ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Gretzky was fully hated on in the late 80s-90s after he left the Edmonton Oilers for those nasty L.A. Kings ducks But he has since returned (via S. Louis, NY) to retire into a fullfilling career coaching the Canadian Nat’l team to Olympic gold. Yeah, how can we not love The Great One, the man holds 61 NHl records!

  9. I lived in Canada during the hate-on era, but I can understand how he’s back to being golden. Good to know ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. wow!!! i googled her and shes quite something makes all desis solid proud eh? any canadians here? i vote that we vote for her – its free and unlimited!!!! support the south asians man!!! first brown face on the top32 – she rocks!!! wot say?

  11. Hey guys,

I think Devika needs to be actively promoted in the South Asian community if she is going to make it to the Top 10! I like her choice of book too, though she is a bit too much into pop for my taste, she still has a great voice and deserves to get to the Top 10 to at least to give it some needed diversity! So tell your friends to vote for her on June 28th on CTV!

  12. she is ugly ! and ‘Indian’ … puhleez….she pretends to sing like Canadians/Americans in their accent ! wtf ?!! what happened to natural voice and all ? Too much pretension…i’m sure the judges and most people won’t like that.

  13. actually that’s no accent – the girl is seriously talented. and all that is without ANY formal training. she’s very cool

  14. ร‚ยท pakkagujju have u even heard her or even cared to hear her before making any comment dude i bet you cant sing betta than her or at all …. lol i agree with this person who says we should promote her

  15. A late ebtry… but if she is really talented… what music eduaction she has? Why she is associated with real real junk programme like radio voice. it is basically ,I think, because she is getting promotion in canadian circles who do not know what she speaks on radio voice. If she says that family pressure brought her onto the program. i do not buy that .. U need to take a decision… or u could show your class there .. but….the program is total junk
