Portuguesa flips the ‘Bird’

Desi iPod parody: hot

Nelly Furtado bhangra remix: hot

iPod parody with remix: priceless!

Watch this kick-ass video (via Badmash).

Update: By the way, Furtado dances bhangra and sings in Hindi:

Furtado, a second generation Portuguese-Canadian, grew up in Toronto and Victoria, British Columbia. She was inundated with different cultures. One weekend, she would join friends in Latin dance; the next at an Indian bhangra party; the next celebrating the Chinese New Year.

DJ John von Seggern also did a Nelly vs. Asha Bhosle remix of ‘I’m Like a Bird.’ Some odd remixes are described here, including Enrique Iglesias vs. Asha and Barry White done Bollystyle.

Best of the Best college dance competition (bhangra, raas and fusion), April 2, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Manhattan; details TBA

  1. I don’t know if this will even compare to the ORIGINAL Desi dance competition, Bhangra Blowout –which is going to be held March 26 in D.C. And as an added incentive, Russell Peters is scheduled to host and Bhangra legend Sukshinder Shinda is scheduled to perform.

    GW reprazent!

  2. word, sajit. there are TWO colonial mutineers. 😀

bhangra blowout is the real deal. everything else is just “flattery”. 😉

  3. after witnessing last year’s bhangra blowout i’m headed to south beach bhangra

dooooooooood. what did i miss??! i was in CA, so it was the first BB i didn’t attend in years. also, i’m not going to SoBe. if i get any tanner, we’ll have to put those reflective stripes on my ass, so that i can be seen at night. 😉

  4. bhangra blowout? puhleez. bhangra competitions are like ‘groundhogs day.’ you see one act, then you see the same crap again and again and again and again…

at least these guys are going for more variety with their show. AND they didn’t hire a racist comedian to emcee.

  5. ANNA ~ let’s just say the team in charge wasn’t too smart. You have to be pretty dumb to play a multi-part skit degrading Sikhism at a Bhangra competition. Making fun of a culture, fine. Make fun of a religion – I don’t think so. Luckily they didn’t play more than the first part but I was ready to kick some butt (along with quite a few other people).

  6. Anna: As to last year’s BB, details from The Sikh Coalition (scroll down):

South Asia Society Apologizes for Offensive Skit at Bhangra Blowout Competition . The South Asia Society at George Washington University apologized for an offensive skit at its “Bhangra Blowout” bhangra competition. This year organizers of the event, attended by over 5000 people, included a skit called, Punjabi Eye for the White Guy. This skit described the five kakkars as Keg (of beer), Kurri (womanizing), Kanada (rustic, Punjabi pronunciation of Canada), Kash (meaning Cash or pursuit of material interests), and Kar (or Cars and a passion for self-indulgence) as the new articles of the Sikh faith. The contents of the skit were immensely hurtful to all many Sikhs in audience, who wrote to express their concern to the Coalition. The Sikh Coalition worked with all parties involved, in particular with the GW Sikh Students Association and the South Asian Students. As a result the South Asia Society has issued a public apology.

    DAMN- that was f*cked up!

  8. As the winner of the 1st BB (RU has always been that good), I can tell you…this will not only compare, but surpass. It’s got it all. It’s the cream skimmed off the top of a host of dance competitions.

  9. Sajit, you are very perceptive. I can’t believe ya’ll fall all over yourselves celebrating his jokes. Have you seen him perform live? He goes way too far with the race stuff, especially about East Asians. Audience members know it’s not cool, but still line up to fellate him afterwards. It’s grossly hypocritical.

Jumble, do you understand satire? How is he different from Chris Rock? Eddie Murphy? Lenny Bruce? George Carlin?

  11. You’re comparing him to Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Lenny Bruce, or George Carlin? That’s rich. The fellation continues…

  12. The whole bhangra culture in America is different to that in England. In the UK its mostly nighclub based and they dont have like major dance shows and clashes like these, although there are dance crews

  13. dearest jumble/”eat”,

(your email addy is eat@shit.die, right?) 😀

let me be consummately clear: i’ve never heard RP, so i’m not addressing your contention of his hatefulness. however, i’m just DYING to know something else though– if we were talking about a female you disliked, would you write “cunnilingus” as often as “fellation”?

with loving curiousity, (but not the kind that killed the pussy…er…cat),

  14. Jumble, you offer nothing but your opinion. Sepiamutiny has a post linking to a video available for download in which you can watch RP’s routine. It is uncensored and quite funny.

You’re comparing him to Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Lenny Bruce, or George Carlin? That’s rich. The fellation continues…

Yes, I am. And it’s obvious that you are — how should I put it — obviously too stupid to comprehend the reasons why. Do you have a specific instance that you can refer to justify your claims(or rantings)? And just why are you stuck on the fellating, seems someone has some sexual/low-self esteem issues.

  15. I’m not the only one that thought so. One of the SM’ers that went to a show noted the same:

“Peters incorporates a lot of racial stereotype jokes in his routine, which is fine, except for one point when I thought he clearly crossed the line. Judging by the winces in the audience I wasn’t the only one. The series of jokes was directed at the Mexican-American busboy that was collecting the empty drink glasses.”

You didn’t answer my question. Have you ever seen him live? Then you’d know what I’m talking about “sluggo.” And of course you didn’t see any overtly racist material in the onine video — it’s his PROMO CLIP you idiot.

Anna, nice try at a witty remark. It takes a lot of practice, good luck.

  16. Jumble, no I have not seen him live. I don’t know what YOU are talking about but the link that I downloaded from is 57Mb, and is a 45 minute set. That is not a promotional video. I asked YOU for information regarding what was so overtly racist, not something from somebody else’s website/blog. You still not have provided any of YOUR evidence to back up the racist allegation. As for witty remarks fellation falls far short of someone who does not, not only understanding social satire, but is unable to read the FAQ on to use HTML.

  17. “but is unable to read the FAQ on to use HTML.”

That is the nerdiest shit I’ve heard all day. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

  18. Well I have seen Russel Peters live and let me say this:

Many stand up comedians do race based jokes. Watch ComicView on BET, watch some of the comedians Jay Leno brings on his show sometimes and I’ve seen it on many other stand up comedy shows … and the guys sluggo mentioned too. It’s all mostly done for a laugh nothing else.

  19. That is the nerdiest shit I’ve heard all day

That’s it? That’s your rejoinder? Your claim to the avowed witticism that you say you know best? Why don’t you stop playing with your self for a few minutes, and free up a hand to type something more than that….

  20. Anna, nice try at a witty remark. It takes a lot of practice, good luck.

you’re obviously speaking from personal experience, how sweet of you to share your plight. thank you.

i was trying to be kind, but you’re being a bit of an ass. i really do want to know– is “cunnilingus” as over-used in your world as “fellatio”? why is it so difficult for you to answer a forthright question?

in other news, it’s obvious where you fall on the oral/anal continuum…

p.s. using “Sluggo” as a handle…lame. you have the nerve to insinuate that i’m not witty? feh.

  21. just to clarify my postscript– in this comment, “jumble” used our sluggo’s handle instead of his own.

to be crystalline clear: i love sluggo like i love all of our frequently-commenting-loyalists. there’s no way my ire was flowin’ that way. 🙂

  22. bhangra blowout is not only offensive and violent, but it lost its reputation last year entirely. security is horrible (there was a fatal fight) and all the good teams just go to south beach bhangra, so BB is basically a competition for South Beach Bhangra Rejects.
