Monday Morning Music

Good morning, Monday…Play this loud in your office and have your cubicle be this morning’s water cooler.

I’ve always been fascinated with how desi music is spread worldwide and fuses with local sounds. Though this video is from last year, I think this may be one of the best I’ve seen as far as Desi Reggaetone music. Turns out homeboy is a brother from our Canadian mother…

Sunil aka ishQ Bector from Winnipeg’s legendary hip hop group Frek Sho moved to India a few years ago, signed to a major label, and became a star…Born & raised in Winnipeg, Canada, Sunil aka IshQ has made Mumbai his second home. Certified in Chinese Medicine with his forte in Acupuncture, this multi-talented Gemini followed his first passion in life, music. He has studied acting at the famous Roshan Taneja film studio in Mumbai then went on to VJ & host shows on MTV, B4U & Channel V… Since then he has shared the stage with artists like Sean Paul, Mobb Deep, Chamillionaire, John Cena (WWE), & Rishi Rich raising the temperature a couple of notches with his skillz on the mic and as a performer.[IshQisDead]

Desi Canadian Chinese Medicine schooled Reggatone singing hip hip performer in India. Now that is international fusion right there…

And another fusion video, just for giggles, this one Chutney flavored

I’m hopping on the next flight to Trinidad to find me some sparkle vest wearing man…Tell me these videos weren’t the wake-up call you needed this morning. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. I loved that video, “Chutney Bacchanal.” I actually remember watching that video. It was almost a year after I graduated from college, in 1994 or 1995. You all won’t believe me where I saw this video…on this video program called “Caribbean Rhythms” on BET (Black Entertainment Television).

YES! I’m not joking. I saw it on BET–the same network that has “106 & Park”, and the infamous “BET UNCUT,” yes the very same BET, back when it had decent shows, and surprisingly diverse.

  2. The track is sick and the video is irreverent, over the top, and impressively well-made. ishQ is doing us right; BROWNSTARS unite!

Taz, thanks so much for putting this up!

  3. The first video is too bollywood tacky. The trinidad one is cool though. Desi americans should be visiting the carribean islands for holidays instead of the usual american locales where they usually dont fit in.

Hahaha me too! Since then I’ve been frightened to come across it again. I guess that day has come. In any case, thanks for the blast from the past.

  5. Ishq Bector is a super wack-attack, but I do like the video – it’s catchy. And it’s much better than “Ay HipHopper” (which made a little bit of vomit rise in my throat).

I love soca-chutney way too much for someone who has no Carribean roots at all. I wake up every Sat. morning hoping to catch Geeta Bisram on West Indian Music TV at 9:30 am on ITV.

And here’s my contribution to the soca-chutney video list on this thread:

  6. I enjoyed the humor in both of the videos. Chris Garcia has a bit of a James Brown vibe going on.

  7. Music post are the best! Besides Deevani, I’ve never heard of any Indian-reggaeton fusion.

  8. my elation at the first video was completed eradicated by watching the second…. still, gotta love music posts! ๐Ÿ™‚

They feature Caribbean music (or W. Indies if you like to refer to it that way) every weekend, all weekend long.

  10. Wow…Chutney Bacchanal. Eh see that video in a LONG time – and that was actually a blessing. Thanks for the unwanted flashbacks…. Since adding links to chutney-soca music is becoming a trend in this post, i thought i’d add a few of my own.

    And another fusion – chutney/dancehall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqoEoeFPVKU&feature=related

Recurring elements many chutney AND soca songs are humour and innuendo. I am not a huge fan of chutney but just for fun, lets play ‘Spot the Innuendo’:

  11. Yo, Nisha B is kinda funny… I might have to do a post simply on all the SoCa/Chutney videos that are posted on this thread. Thanks for dropping links! I’ve been enjoying watching all of them.

Here’s one that made me laugh this morning – Nisha B – Bison.

I was a regular viewer of BET in the 1990s. My favorite shows were Planet Groove and Midnight Love. Now they hardly show any music videos; it’s mostly reality shows and sitcom reruns these days.
