Tennis star deflects clothing row
Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has refused to be drawn into a controversy over what she wears on court. The Muslim player had been accused by a leading cleric of wearing “indecent dress” and being a “corrupting influence on young women”.
Mirza said it was “disturbing” that her dress was a subject of controversy but she would take it in her stride.
Mirza, 18 and from Hyderabad, recently became the first Indian woman to reach the fourth round of the US Open.
Mirza said on her return from the US: “Every word I speak, every skirt I wear is discussed and analysed. I have to take all this in my stride.
“Wherever I go people look at me. That’s why these days I prefer to stay at home. I have to learn to live with all this.”
She added: “It is quite disturbing that my dress has become the subject of controversy I don’t want to say anything on this”.
‘Not permitted’
Haseeb-ul-hasan Siddiqui, a leading cleric of the Muslim organisation the Sunni Ulema Board, said: “The dress she wears on the tennis courts not only doesn’t cover large parts of her body but leaves nothing to the imagination.”
Mr Siddiqui said Islam did not allow women to wear skirts, shorts and sleeveless tops in public.
“She will undoubtedly be a corrupting influence on these young women, which we want to prevent,” he said.

Top Muslim clerics support Mirza over short skirt feud
LUCKNOW, India (AP) — Top Muslim clerics came out in support of India’s teen tennis sensation Sania Mirza, days after a Muslim group in her hometown issued an edict describing her short skirts and sleeveless shirts as un-Islamic.
“What Sania wears in [the] tennis court is the demand of the game,” said Khalid Rashid of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, which arbitrates over religion-related issues for more than 160 million Muslims living in this country.
“Perhaps, the fatwa [edict] was issued to gain cheap publicity,” Rashid told The Associated Press.
Last week, the Sunni Ulema Board — a little-known group in Mirza’s hometown Hyderabad — issued the edict saying Islam did not permit women to wear skirts, shorts and sleeveless tops in public, and that Mirza should cover up.
Newspaper reports quoted the Sunni Ulema Board’s chief, Hasheeb-ul-Siddiqui, saying he was worried Mirza was becoming a role model for young Muslim girls.
The 18-year-old Muslim tennis player, the first Indian woman to break into the top 50 WTA rankings, dismissed the fatwa.
Mirza was ousted earlier this month from the U.S. open in the fourth round — the first Indian woman to make it that far in any Grand Slam event. She has a growing following across India.
“It is a sick mind who looks into what Sania wears during a match,” said Naheed Zaffar, a 21-year-old college student in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh state.
