MexiDesi

Seems like Abhi may have more in common with turban wearing LA Mayor Villaraigosa than we thought. (via Razib)

In world wide context South Asians and mestizos can be viewed as somewhat analogous; a stable admixture between West and East Eurasian elements. Of course, the “East Eurasian” ancestry of mestizos consists of the New World descendants of Paleolithic Siberians, while those of South Asians are the ancient long resident populations of that region of the world.[geneexpression]

It is kind of a surprising finding. As an activist that works in the umbrella political category of Asian American and Pacific Islander, it’s interesting to see that Houston Gujaratis have more in common with LA Mexicans than East Asians. Of course, one is a construct of political identity and the other one is purely genetics.

Still. I totally see this as potential marriage fodder for Desis who want to prove to their parents that they have more in common with their Mexican boy/girlfriend. I guess Columbus wasn’t that far off then, was he?

  1. Taz: You know better! There is no such thing as “Gujurati”. I am and know lots of Gujaratis though;-)

  2. The flat butt is a commonality between Mexis and Desis. Along with chilli, lime and tamarind.

  3. i saw this implicitly in other papers, but it really jumped out at me in this one. though keep in mind that these sorts of charts are sensitive to the populations you include within them. so the “dimensions” of variation are sensitive to the populations you throw into the bin. but i think it’s a moderately robust relationship because of what i pointed out out; indians and mestizos are both hybrids of the western and eastern streams which came out of africa.

  4. There is no such thing as “Gujurati”

Yes, this misspelling is second only to misspelling “ghandi!” 🙂

The flat butt is a commonality between Mexis and Desis.

I am a bit of an outlier then.

    Then what are “gujus”?

I am a bit of an outlier then.

    Proof?

    Photos?

  6. P.S. My Indian girl (a Tamil) has that nice African butt. Come to think about it, Selena was an outlier among the Mexicans.

  7. Big Dog on January 7, 2010 1:09 PM I guess that’s why brown people look like brown people. Big Dog on January 7, 2010 1:12 PM P.S. My Indian girl (a Tamil) has that nice African butt. Come to think about it, Selena was an outlier among the Mexicans.

A big dog is still a dog.

  8. Tamarind, chili, lime, unaspirated stops, moustaches, loud colors, awesome dance…the similarities really do abound.

  9. The flat butt is a commonality between Mexis and Desis.

Stand a naked mexi next to a naked desi and the dissimilarities are starkly obvious. Unlike the average desi the average mestizo has tan lines, heavy thighs, calves and arms, and deep chests.

indians and mestizos are both hybrids of the western and eastern streams which came out of africa.

That sounds like BS to me. Firstly there is plenty african blood in mestizos which you willfully ignore; secondly the european (western) and mongoloid (eastern) genes found in mestizos are of far more recent origins; and thirdly eurasians do not look like desis.

Generalize much? I visit Mexico every year, my best friend is mexican and she has none of the above, nor do any female relatives. Although I’ve seen a few with “deep” chests.

and as for tan lines and heavy thighs, my mother fits that, although i think it’s a result of age.

Eurasian is a term, when CORRECTLY used, refers to the people of Turkey–(people who have one Asian parent and one Caucasian parent misuse it to fit their own description) Many Turks have blond(e) hair, blue eyes and many do look like Indians. If you’re referring to half white/asian people, there people in India who look like that also, we are a very diverse group of people.
