A New State in India: Telangana

The biggest story in India this week appears to be the central government’s agreement to allow a new state to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh, called Telangana. The new state will include the tech-powerhouse city of Hyderabad, and will be predominantly Telugu-speaking. One news article I read put the estimated population of the new state at 35 million people.

Here is what the new state will look like

telengana map.jpg

I have known of agitations for a separate Telangana state for awhile, though I must admit I do not know the history in depth, and would be glad to be enlightened by readers who know the region better than I do. However, Wikipedia does offer a few helpful background facts. First, the region that will become Telangana was, during British colonialism, part of the Princely State of Hyderabad, and was only formally merged into Andhra in 1956 — and even then, the merger was controversially imposed by the central government. The agitations for a separate state have been going on for at least 40 years; in 1969, 400 people were killed in agitations for a separate state of Telangana.

I had earlier thought that language was a factor in the demands for Telangana, but in fact language is not mentioned by supporters of this movement, since Telugu is spoken in the other half of Andhra as well. Rather, the focus seems to be on access to irrigation and economic opportunity (see this interview). Are there other factors that people know of?

The news has resulted in the mass resignation of Congress Party-allied MLAs in the other part of Andhra Pradesh, suggesting that the Central Government may not be able to easily sustain its promise to create Telangana without making lots of new promises to the other half of the state. That, or we might see one of those major regional political realignments in Indian politics that can cause seemingly strong governments to fall. (Incidentally, the BJP had promised to create a Telangana state when it was in power, but was unable to do so. However, during the BJP’s five years in power it did create three new states in northern India.)

The news is also expected to give a new boost to other statehood agitation movements in other parts of India; Gorkhaland is one that is often mentioned.

Do you support the creation of Telangana? Isn’t it possible that acceding to these statehood movements in India might lead to a further weakening of an already weak central government? Also, do you think these movements might feed a sense of monoculturalist ‘separateness’ that could make the region a less inviting place for people from different ethno-linguistic backgrounds who happen to live there?

  1. I am a Hyderabadi settled in Australia.

Lots of good discussions here. Nothing more to add there

We need a referandum on this and a secret ballot in the assembly.

    This is all about Power.

Because of Telangana the Congress has created a hornet’s nest.

Gurkhaland in West Bengal, Vidarbha in Maharashtra, Harat Pradesh in UP, another in rajasthan, Bodoland in Assam, One from carving part of MP and UP and more on the way.

    A waste of time.

  2. This is a tough one, there has been something genuinely positive about the gradual emergence of linguistic and ethnically distinct states in india. It has empowered people and reduced the distance (literally!) between power centers and people. It will also help with urbanization as india literally needs dozens of new mega-cities to accomodate the population.

But there is a nasty underside to this as well. Politics in india is a lucrative profession, often populated by goondas and fixers and absoutely third-raters. Even less than BA-fail as my grandparents might say. The best way to make money is to get your ethno-religous-linguistic category declared a state/distinct group. Now you can rake in the cash via corruption. Indian politicians are now often $ millionaires and in some cases billionaires!

So there is an aspect of identity politics substituting for development, instead of building roads and schools you can give people asmita (pride) and an imaginary history of greatness and so on. Obsession with identity as the opium of the masses if you will…This is also the basis of agitation against “outsiders”. So thats the crappy side of whats going on here…

  3. While merging the Andhra state with Hyderabad state (Telangana) in 1957 Mr. Nehru said, we are marrying an innocent girl to a naughty boy and Hyderabad sate is free to get separated after 5 years, if they get a raw deal. And Telangana got a raw deal and suffered for the last 50 years or so..

    1) Telangana sits on the entire coal stock of AP but the power situation here remains grim. The employment situation is as lop-sided. while there are around 11 lakh jobs in government and aided institutions, the share of the backward region is only 2.5 lakh while it should be six lakh as per GO-610. The GO has not been implemented after 20 years.

    2) Bachawat award entitled 811 TMC of Krishna river water to AP, of which Telangana gets less than 100 TMC. But as a new state, its share would be governed by catchment area (69%), cultivable area in river basin (71%), geographical area and population (42%). The groundwater level of catchment area is lower in Telangana and rainfall is scant while regional backwardness is high..

    3) Telangana is said to be getting less than 20% water from the Godavari river while it has 70% catchment area.

    4) What has led to strong resentment among locals is the fact that Telangana contributes around 50% to the state exchequer but less than 20% is spent back on the region . Its backwardness attracts central funds to Andhra Pradesh which are not funnelled to its development but used in coastal and Rayalaseema regions.

    5) The biggest reason for the lopsided distribution of resources is the fact that only three chief ministers from the region have ruled Andhra in the last 53 years, and their total tenure was JUST six years.

    6) After living 50 decades together there was not much cultural integration between the people of 2 regions.

    7) All major political parties Congress, BJP and TDP & TRS(Infact these two parties were partners) promised a separate Telangana state if elected.Thats the reason congress has taken this decision, not because one huger strike or some studentagitations.

It’s a 50 years long agitation and 400 people have sacrificed their lives in 1969 and around 45 people in the last 2 weeks for their just cause. Its clear to me that 4 crore telanga people dosen’t want to stay with Andhra.

I am from basically Andhra but brought up and settled in Telangana.I fully support the Indian government decision of creating a separate Telangana state with Hyderabad as its capital.

  4. Ramachandra Guha on the Telengana movement –

    http://www.hindustantimes.com/Telangana-isn-t-scary/H1-Article1-485141.aspx

In retrospect, it is clear that this reorganisation consolidated national unity, such that India did not go the way of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which had to suffer bloody civil wars because of the unwillingness to grant linguistic autonomy. However, our nation-state is comparatively young, and still evolving. It now faces a second generation of challenges, these pertaining to the regional imbalances in social and economic development. A new SRC should be constituted, which would look dispassionately into the demands for Vidarbha, Gorkhaland, Harit Pradesh, Kongu Nadu, and other such. Its mandate should also include the granting of real financial and political autonomy to panchayats and municipalities.

  5. hello people there should be something like..floods or a bomb hoax or like a terrorist activity without harming much to the society ..touch wood… every one should be fine guys if u remember after the demise of YSR there was a huge craze for YS JAGAN being CM floods came and everyone were in social harmony…everyone collected and raised the funds… all the major companies in ANDHRAPRADESH came forward and done thier best..but on the other side… evryone has forgotten the YS JAGAN issue .. .thinks a seperate state will not solve the problem of religion and caste in Andhra Pradesh. What better proof to show that this was a political trump card during the recent elections. Shame on all pol parties. Innocent students sacrificed! Sad state of affairs. Modern Indian youth should think about unity not seperation… all the parties were supporting TRS but after declaring ..they started resigning ..shame to the indian politics.. thats why british ruled us for may be 300 years .. because we fight among eachother…

PS: I just hope things are resolved amicably and without violence, we have been living together without even noticing differences, any violence will be hard on us. I know this will mean a lot of difference and uneasy, esp rayalaseema will suffer a lot, coastal andhran will have to compromise.

Of late big money in AP has lead to lousy politics and awkward corruption and waste of money, now the same politicians will have smaller pool to play.

  7. India shall focus on progress and handling poverty, education problems. Creating new states is not a solution to that. Creating a new state means a larger number of corrupt politicians and higher expenses to manage same size. In the current time the size of government shall be small not big, It is a bad idea.

  8. My take.

I laugh at the politicians and people who are now insisting on unity of telugu people when in real life they would’nt help others until they belong to their own caste.

Anyways people interested should try to honestly research these things

Telangana history from last 200 years to the present day….how they got ripped by nizam, killed by razakars, exploited by government injustice in jobs, lack of irrigation projects when two major rivers run through it, betrayal by by-gone telangana politicians and spinelessness of the present day telangana politicians.

Generations of telangana people have been cruelly oppressed by nizam, uncared thereafter by the successive government(CM’s mostly were from the other regions). Frustations, helplessness and revolt runs deep in the blood, offshoot of which unfortunately I think is naxalism.

People in telangana region do honestly want a seperate state. It is more than 50 year-old movement right from AP’s inception. More than 400 students and farmers have made supreme sacrfices. People have to go back and read some history and only can they make constructive solutions to the problem. Just saying united andhra does’nt solve the problems on ground.

Hell, in US we have two organisations for telugu people running on caste and regional lines. Why no unity there.

One more question to ponder. If telangana seperates, why do rayalseema and may be uttarandhra want to seperate from andhra. Where is the unity and who is the culprit.

There is discontent which needs to be addressed. Unfortunately in the past Government made lot of unkept promises to the region and the trust factor is not there any more.

  9. Rahul,

A single yet hoest government of Andhra is better than two corrupt governments in two states. A single corrupt government is better than two. 99.9% chances are government in both states are lilkely to corrupt.

Use all combinations and permutation – two states is a bad idea.

  10. Rahul: You make it sound as if it is all peaches & roses in telangana. So who were the Naxalites fighting ?

I once asked a forward caste pro-telanganite how he can support g.o. 610 without also supporting OBC quotas. I am yet to get an answer. So all those pro-telanganites are you also pro caste based reservations ?

  11. V@104,

Your questions are incomplete or wrongly worded. 1. I do not understand what you mean by peaches and roses. 2. Can you elaborate and give details on your second question. You confuse me with a wrongly worded question and incomplete preceding details.

Democracy will be stronger only when people from all the backgrounds get benefits without partiality, be it representation in Government(politics or jobs) or Government programs(distribution of water, irrigation projects). Only then, can there be happiness.

Telangana was forced into a merger with Andhra with Nehru putting a clause. If this merger does not work out with in 5 years, Telangana can seek seperate status again. Telangana has been seeking seperate status for last 50 years with many lives lost, farmers getting raw deal, lack of honest distribution of water, absolute disregard to the Gentleman’s agreement during merger (before you say United Andhra, read this agreement please. This is important), Government jobs being robbed from the people of this region.

Rest of India, I wish realizes how Telangana is forcefully being kept away from separating even after Union Government’s decision. One more thing to ponder for my Indian brothers. There are already demands saying Rayalseema and UttarAndhra want to seperate from Andhra when Telangana seperates. Who do you think is the culprit?

  12. Who do you think is the culprit?

Politicians seeking fiefdoms and exploiting petty sentimentality and dangling false promises to achieve it?

  13. So why can’t they have a referenndum on whether the majority of the people of Telengana want to form a separate state instead of the rioters, central and Andhra governments deciding the issue?

  14. So why can’t they have a referenndum on whether the majority of the people of Telengana want to form a separate state instead of the rioters, central and Andhra governments deciding the issue?

Sounds good in theory, but it’s naive to assume such a thing would go smoothly. You’ll get protests, bribery and vote buying, and voter intimidation. And that’s if you’re lucky. If you’re not so lucky protests become riots, bribery becomes outright fraud, and intimidation becomes murder. I remember reading a posthumous article about how YSR Reddy came to power (he evidently relished murder, extortion, and general goodaism to get his way) and it shocked me. Andhra had apparently turned into Bihar while I wasn’t looking.

Contrary to popular belief, democracy only really works when people are somewhat disengaged. When passions run high it quickly degenerates into mob-rule.

  15. I mean exactly what I said. Who were the naxalites in telangana region fighting. ? who do they claim are oppressors. Why should you support region based quotas, when you are against caste based quotas. I hope you realise Engg&medical seats in AP have sub-regional quota.

From the agreement 7. Domicile Rules : A temporary provision be made to ensure that for a period of five years, Telangana is regarded as a unit as far as recruitment to subordinate services is concerned; posts borne on the cadre of these services may be reserved for being filled up by persons who satisfy the domicile conditions as prescribed under the existing Hyderabad Mulki Rules. ( 12 years of Stay in Telangana area)

So most of the settlers are qualified as per mulki rules

  16. V,

Where did I say I was against caste-based quotas? I am for a Democracy where every section gets represented and weak are not exploited. If it happens through caste-based quotas or some other means, all of our citizens should be happy.

“I mean exactly what I said” – V It is that exactly which I did not understand. “Peaches and Roses” – I do not know what this means in the current context.

Naxalism in modern era was due to the oppression by the landlords in the 70’s and negligence by the Government thereafter. Now it has taken it’s own route becoming a monster. Farmers if not taken proper care of, can also wield weapons due to anger for their plight. Government should ensure towards people getting their fair share of rights as promised. Water from various irrigation dams as promised to the region is still not fulfilled and they get only a paltry share. Agricultural produce has fallen by half since the merger. Imagine where some of those farmers might have gone. Ever wondered how the city is getting water at the expense of the farmers in the region. Whatever water sources are there in the region are being diverted to the city one by one.

The agreement is called Gentleman’s agreement for a reason(Gentleman). You twist the Domicile rule as you please but the fact remains that locals are loosing there rightful opportunities due to the exodus of people to this region. Now the jobs that should have belonged to the people of this region but are occupied by people of other region (A & R) is in the lakhs. Now brother what do you expect people of this region to do. Suffer injustice in water share, jobs, cultural poaching and insults. And how conveniently you forgot about the rest of the points in the agreement and the GO’s.

Even Union Government acknowledges this more than 50 year old struggle but still other regions want to hang on. Dont you find it shameful. That sums up the character of those other regions I guess.

  17. “Andhra had apparently turned into Bihar while I wasn’t looking. “

My family hails from Chittoor and Kadapa districts (though my dad’s side has been in TN for a few generations) and they say its been like that in Rayalaseema since they can remember-the region was always splintered as it often came in the middle of warring empires from the north and those from the south. In fact, many of the Tamil castes originated centuries ago in Andhra and because of the conditions migrated south, assimilated and are now pakka Tamilians. There was a brief unity of the area under the Vijayanagar rulers and that was when it prospered the most, but eventually it went back to its old system of clan divisions and familial ties. Plus, if you’ve been through there, geography ain’t exactly on their side.

My uncle used to joke that if Mr. Venky had decided to stand somewhere else, Rayalaseema would have absolutely nothing….

  18. I noticed that the people of Hyderabad, especially if they are descendants of Afghanis from the 17-18th centuries (i.e. Sania Mirza), don’t view themselves as “Andhra Pradeshy”.

Also, if AP gets partitioned, than so should Mumbai from the rest of Maharashtra.

  19. I noticed that the people of Hyderabad, especially if they are descendants of Afghanis from the 17-18th centuries (i.e. Sania Mirza), don’t view themselves as “Andhra Pradeshy”.

Generally Hindi/Urdu speakers refer to themselves as Hyderabadi while Telugu speakers will call themselves Telugus/Andhras.

  20. Last I checked Andhra is part of India and people are free to speak any language. What differnece does it make if people speak Hyderbadi, Hindi, Urdu or Telgu?

India needs to get out of old age hypocratic language barriers.

Money talks. For marale be honest…Language does not make anyone honest.

  21. I noticed that the people of Hyderabad, especially if they are descendants of Afghanis from the 17-18th centuries (i.e. Sania Mirza)

Hey Mahesh, if you know Tamizh you would understand this pungent quote from the Mahakavi Subban. Hey Mahesh, if you know Tamizh you would understand this pungent quote from the Mahakavi Subban. To the ancestry obsessed

I support smaller states because states seem to be the only way for new urban centers to emerge. The break up of the old Madras Presidency and the reorganization of AP created a new urban hub in Hyderabad and drew away the Kostas from Vizag to Nellore to Hyderabad. So now if Telengana gets Hyderabad, Kosta+Rayalseema should go about developing Nellore, Vijayawada, Rajamundhry, and Vizag into mega urban hubs.

In TN Coimbatore developed as an alternative to Chennai only because of the strong private industrial base in that city and an informal pact between its three communities – the industrial Naidus, the agricultural Gounders and the commercial Chettiars.

In some ways I am happy about the Telengana movement because its supporters as well as opponents come from all communities. It is Kapus/Choudharys/Reddys/Velmas/Muslims vs. Kapus/Nayudus/Reddys/Velmas/Muslims In the process the pet theories about the “Indian caste system” a colonial mare’s nest spun out of reels of yarn by the likes of Jaffrelot are crumbling.

  22. Jyotsna –

I support smaller states because states seem to be the only way for new urban centers to emerge

I think thats the most important part of the story. And, yes, its being accomplished desi-style, we are like this only, with hunger-strikes, demos, abuse of this or that group, bus burnings and so on. India is not likely to be confused with sweden or new england anytime soon.

But its a key strategic requirement – I have read someplace that indians need 50 new large cities in the next 10-20 years just to maintain the economic momentum. If it takes new states to create them, so be it….

  23. Development economists notably Atanu Dey have proposed creating 60-75 mega urban hubs of 1-1.5 million people each over the next few decades, as a way to urbanise India. Urban agglomerations have lower unit fixed costs and so can provide urban amenities more cheaply. One of the consequences of state focused development is the failure of intermediate urban hubs in drawing away rural migrants, who prefer to head straight for the megapolises. Smaller states may lead to creating more intermediate hubs.

  24. Smaller states may lead to creating more intermediate hubs.

I doubt it. They’ll just cross state lines to the megapolis. One thing that keeps people within state bounds is the linguistic organization of states, but if Andhras and Telanganans all speak Telugu that’s not an issue. Maybe if the smaller state government focused specifically on building new urban hubs we’d see it, but in practice it won’t happen.

This is partly because Indian governments don’t care enough about their charges to make plans and follow through, they reserve their cunning only for finding new ways to skim from the public coffers. The other reason is that Indian politics is almost always transactional, so development is more about satisfying current powerbrokers and stakeholders than on creating new ones. In other words, if nobody in a city is pulling to develop that city, the city won’t get developed. But if the city doesn’t get developed, then there isn’t enough vitality there to attract the attention of any of the leeches in the government.

It’s for the same reason that rural development is all about handing out more money to farmers rather than getting farm laborers off the farm and into a job that pays them something above peanuts. They just can’t think outside the box that way. It does not compute for them. Where is the payoff for the rural landowning Congress goonda if the poor schlubs working his land get better jobs somewhere that isn’t in his urban cousin’s factory? Where is the payoff for the hammer & sickle crowd if the poor people are too busy succeeding and eating to give a hoot about revolutioning?

  25. Development economists notably Atanu Dey have proposed creating 60-75 mega urban hubs of 1-1.5 million people each over the next few decades, as a way to urbanise India.

I remember reading Antanu’s posts on http://www.indianeconomy.org. He was on the right track until he took his urban agglomeration = lower unit cost = cost-efficient growth to Orwellian extremes and then he was promptly ridiculed by his own colleagues at the blog. That has been his only lapse of logic in an otherwise admirable career.

One of the consequences of state focused development is the failure of intermediate urban hubs in drawing away rural migrants, who prefer to head straight for the megapolises.

The operative term here is “state focused.” Most of the profitable and sustainable economic hubs, at least in market driven societies, are not state created but organically grown. Look at the US, or even India. For every fledgling government directed SEZ, there are a 100 thriving hubs that just grew like mushrooms because one enterprise led to another synergistic enterprise and so on. So I don’t know what the mere creation of smaller states accomplish will in an economic sense, though the political advantages to some would be quite obvious. Jharkhand/Bihar is a perfect example. Jamshedpur, now in Jharkhand, was already an economic powerhouse and an intermediate-hub success story. When the area became a separate state, it led to no new economic hubs or an enhancement of the Tata hub. But it did create a power hub for the adivasis, not that they don’t deserve it.

  26. no.. not at all. Telangana does not mean that it will hate those people who come from different entho-linguistic groups. Anybody can visit the region to see people from all over the country living in harmony. The reasons for seperate state are descrimination of language, culture, illegal occupation of lands ( even the lands given to downtrodden during Bhudaan Movement led by Vinobha Bhave were occupied by land mafia from Rayalaseema and Andhra region) losing jobs in government services and underdevelopment.

New state will bring democracy to the grassroot level. Self respect and abolition of descrimination. self rule and accountability. good governance and speedy development.

  27. No.. not at all. Statehood for Telangana does mean monoculturist. It doesnot mean that it will not be an ideal place for people coming from different ethno-linguistic backgrounds. One can come the region to see people from different ethno-linguistic backgrounds live in harmony. The reasons why it want to be seperated from Andhra Pradesh are descrimination of language, culture, underdevelopment, losing of job opportunities, illegal occupation of agricultual lands (even the lands given to downtrodden during Bhudaan Movement led by Vinobha Bhave) by real estate mafia from Andhra and Rayalaseema region.

  28. I strontly support the seperate statehood for Telangana. Seperate statehood does not mean seperating our country at all. These are the rumours who oppose the smaller states for their political gains and of those who depend largely on underdeveloed areas to grap job opportunitties. One more reason why I support Telangana is we should take our democratic values to the grassroot levels. Smaller states leads to development and accountability and reduces administrative burdens on the state governments. It also assures the democratic spirit to the grassroot level. This is also what we say decentralization of power. Smaller states means creating new capital cities which provides livelihood for many. This is one way of bringing uniform development among the cities.

  29. I share the skepticism that just forming new states is a magic formula for development. Yet, in the indian model, there doesnt seem to be any other way to decentralize growth and devolve power to the local level. So its one of those one-step-forward/one-step-back scenarios. At least in some of the new states, newer and more entreprenuerial elites will grab the ball and run with it.

sunny, deepu – no one is saying that it is wrong or un-indian to create a new state. On the contrary, one reason india has staying power is that it has a history of adapting to changes and demands of new and emerging groups. The real question tho’ is how more development will take place. How will Telengana have better roads and schools, how will it improve the lives of its citizens? Is there a development plan in place? Has it been published somewhere on the web so we can readi t? This is the point people are discussing here.

  30. On the contrary, one reason india has staying power is that it has a history of adapting to changes and demands of new and emerging groups.

On the other hand, India’s tendency to stoke and justify each and every centripetal force is a serious contributing factor towards its chronic underdevelopment. The answer to a paucity of resources is never “let’s make more,” it’s always “let’s split it up among more and more people.” You can’t really expect long-run productivity growth that way. Subdividing states works the same way. If Telangana is underdeveloped the solution isn’t to fix the state’s priorities but to split it apart. And even that is not to actually pursue any functional long-term development path, but to be able to sequester land and jobs that are currently available to people from other parts of Andhra, mostly government jobs and funding, as if that’s a healthy and sustainable long-term development policy.

  31. All major political parties Congress, BJP and TDP & TRS(Infact these two parties were partners) promised a separate Telangana state if elected. Thats the reason congress has taken this decision.

That means all these 3 regional parties and 2 national parties knows the intensity of Telangana movement and their fair and just demands. Based on the last 50 years of experiences, they also felt that the only separate state could address their concerns of under development and injustice regarding jobs, water and power etc

So after Indian government announcing Telangana state, if some parties has gone back on their promise means they are playing politics and are trying to spoil the situation for congress in Andhra reagion. So all these corporate/Land mafia sponsered united andhra hunger strikes and agitations are not to nbe taken seriously. They don’t have the mass support and a SINGLE reason.Andhra leaders like Rajgopal have bought the TV channels and doing a false propaganda.

Even as an Andhra guy settled in Telangana ,I feel Indian government has taken the right decision and they should stick by it and finish the Telangana state process in the net 3-4 months. Otherwise India will see a bloody civil war in the streets of Hyderabad.

  32. If a Telangana state were formed, the fertile lands of Coastal Andhra would have to worry about scarce waters in the Godavari and Krishna. I was in the Godavari district areas last week and I have never seen the Godavari so dry this time of the year before. The hare-brained “leaders” of a Telangana state may well divert waters to useless irrigation projects to dry, infertile Telangana and ruin the fertile lands of coastal Andhra that benefit all of Andhra and India.

As for differences in culture and language, come to think of it – Hyderabad is just about 150 miles from Vijayawada. A mere 3 hour drive if the roads were there.

  33. Facts behind the demand for a separate state – Telangana

Whenever the topic of Telangana is raised, many of us blindly support Andhra or Telangana based on where we come from. Not sure how many really think of why the demand for separate state has been there for such a long time. The 2 major reasons why the demand has been pending for so many years is WATER AND HYDERBAD. People around the state have earned and invested in and around Hyderabad so there is a concerns about the safety of the investment if the state is separated while both the major rivers in our state flow mostly through Telangana. Below are some facts that are few reasons for the demand. Sentiments can be foolish but not facts.

There are 10 districts in Telangana, 9 in Andhra and 4 in Rayalaseema. Out of these 7 districts in Telangana, 3 in Andhra and 1 in Rayalaseema are considered severely backward districts which means 70% of districts in Telangana are backward while in Andhra it is 35% and in Rayalaseema it is 25%. Apart from these there are some areas in all parts of the state which are also backward.

45% of the state income comes from Telangana region. When it comes to utilization of funds, the share of Telangana is only 28%.

Normally canals are dug to supply water to the crops from rivers for cultivation. The amount of land cultivated through canals in just Guntur district is more than the land cultivated with canals in entire Telangana region.

Nagarjuna sagar dam is built in Nalgonda district which is in Telangana but majority of the water from the dam is used for Krishna and Guntur district. The original dam was supposed to be build much ahead of its present location but the location was changed so that it falls in the Telangana region. Due to the construction of the dam several hectares of Lime stone mines vanished as part of the dam back waters. Everyone know that lime stone is used for producing cement. Even the natural resources were not allowed to remain.

Fluorinated water problem is only in Nalgonda district which has not been resolved since decades.

Two major rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra enter the state of AP in the district of Mahaboobnagar( the biggest district in Telangana) but the district always remains the worst draught hit areas along with Anantapur because there is no project and process with which the water can be utilized. The plans for utilization has been pending for decades.

RDS (Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme) is build in Mahaboobnagar to provide water to 85000 hectares of land in the district. The leaders of Rayalaseems blasted the gates of RDS and water is supplied to KC (Kurnool-Cudapah) canal while only remaining water, if any, is supplied to the lands in Mahaboobnagar.

3 TMC of water from Gandipet is sufficient to supply drinking water to our city. Every year 1700 TMC of water is wasted and is flown into Bay of Bengal from river Godavari. Starting from Nizambad to Bay of Bengal there is no project allowed to build on Godavari. If it is built leaders in Godavari districts fear that the fertile lands in the area may fall short of water. If the Godavari water is utilized properly, there will be no scarcity for food grains in our state.

In Telangana regions, only few areas cultivate one crop a year and very rarely two crops a year while most of the land doesn’t even cultivate single crop. In both the Godavari districts, Krishna and Guntur district, two crops a year is common and there are times where even 3 crops a year are cultivated. The only reason is WATER.

Government issue G.O.’s for implicating its decisions. G.O number 610 is the longest non implicated G.O in the history of AP. The G.O was issued in 1986 by late NTR who was then the CM of AP, which is not yet implicated. The G.O speaks about the share of Telangana employees in Government jobs in Telangana region.

33% of the population in Mahaboobnagar district have left the district for livelihood to different parts of the state due to draught and majority of them are working as daily labour. No other district has so many people who fled the home place due to lack of livelihood and working as daily labour.

There are 25 plus government degree colleges in Krishna, Kadapa and Guntur district while there is not even a single government degree college in Ranga Reddy district.

Dairy development corporation of AP purchases milk from farmers across the state for distribution. For the same milk, in Andhra, the government pay Rs. 24 to the farmers and in Telangana they pay Rs. 22 per litre. Partiality is shown even in milk J

In between 2005-2008 government sold lands worth Rs. 20000 crores in and around Hyderabad which was utilized to build projects in Rayalaseema and Andhra.

Not even a single project was completed in Telangana in the last 5 years while several projects were completed in Andhra and Rayalaseema.

    The Case for Telangana

The people of Telangana have fought for creation of a new state for themselves for nearly 60 years now. This legitimate fight for creation of a new state with Hyderabad as its capital, within the legal confines of Indian Constitution, has had a voice since the time of Indian Independence.

In 1948, right after Indian Independence, the Indian Army entered the region to liberate the people of Telangana as part of Hyderabad State from the Nizam Rule. The newly formed Hyderabad State was a distinct entity in Indian Union and had its elections in 1953 prior to the formation of Andhra Pradesh in 1956.

Meanwhile, another region next to Telangana, called Andhra, was keen on fighting for a separate state for its people away from Tamil people. Fearing that most of the newly created jobs and opportunities would be taken up by Tamils since Tamils were more educated and had access to opportunities, and also citing the reasons that Andhras would not be well represented in Tamil dominated Madras Presidency, Andhra people started a protest. Potti Sriramulu of Andhra region went on a hunger strike in Madras for 58 days and died fighting for creation of a separate state out of Madras Presidency called Andhra State with Madras as its capital.

After his death, the Central Government in New Delhi conceded to his first demand, that of creation of Andhra State, but it rejected his other demand. Madras became capital of new Tamil State instead of Andhra State. Contrary to the widely spread misconception, Potti Sriramulu fought for political aspirations of Andhra people of Madras Presidency, not the Telangana people of Hyderabad State.

The Andhra People having lost Madras to Tamils looked for an alternative city for its capital and eyed the glorious city of Hyderabad. Using the slogan that Telugu is the binding factor for both the regions, they renewed their fight to include Telangana into their new dream of Vishalandhra. The People of Telangana had a different opinion – they didn’t think it was a wise move. Telangana people were educated in Urdu under Nizam while the Andhra people were educated in Telugu and English under British. The new opportunities clearly gave preference to English and Telugu in the new India. During 1948-1952, though Hyderabad was a different state ruled by civil and administrators, there was heavy influx of Andhra people into Telangana to take up newly opening positions in the new India. Hyderabad city saw the first waves of protests against joining Andhra Pradesh in 1956.

But the prevailing mood in the country was already set for creation of states along linguistic lines. Potti Sri Ramulu’s death and Andhra people’s demand for creation of a state on linguistic basis led to creation of First State Reorganization Committee (SRC) in India. Though Nehru was averse to this idea, many new states got formed in India on the basis of language. Kerala and Karnataka got formed immediately. Telangana was clubbed with Andhra State to form new Andhra Pradesh though Fazal Ali of First SRC clearly expressed reservations against clubbing together the two regions that were unequal partners. In his recommendations he went on to say that Telangana could stay as separate state if the union of these regions did not work out.

To protect the interest of Telangana, that was recognized by everyone as one of the most backward and illiterate regions, where bonded labor and zamindari system was rampant, many ‘Gentleman’s Agreement’ promises were made by leaders of Andhra to ensure that the new opportunities in Telangana go to Telangana people. Actually, there was already a system in place to take care of such representations – called Mulki – which was practiced by erstwhile Nizam who had three regions under him – Telangana, Kannada and Marathi. These rules allowed certain portions of jobs to be given people of that region only. The agreements between Andhra and Telangana leaders included following Mulki rules in the new state.

Unfortunately for Telangana people, all the clauses of these Gentleman’s Agreements were immediately flouted. Illegally, thousands of Andhra people were given top jobs in Telangana region. This resulted in mass migration when these top honchos coming from Andhra started to fill other positions with their kith and kin flouting all the guidelines that were established and agreed upon. In fact, any observer will notice that millions of Andhra people have migrated to Telangana region, while negligible Telangana people have migrated to Andhra region.

The fact that Telangana voted a minority and opposition Communist parties during this time to the State Assembly against the majority and ruling Congress party of Andhra didn’t help Telangana cause. With Indira Gandhi in power, the states became puppets and Congress became all-powerful. Dissident causes were suppressed ruthlessly. When the SR Act of 1956 were clearly violated by Andhras, Telangana people launched an agitation in 1969 demanding a separate state. It was overwhelmingly crushed by Indira Gandhi who had no mood for creating new states. Thousands were arrested and put in jail while 350 people protestors were killed in police shootings. Indira Gandhi did not allow splitting of states during her entire regime.

When their agitation was ruthlessly suppressed, the Telangana people took the electoral route in 1971. They launched a new party called Telangana Praja Samiti (TPS) and voted 11 out of 12 Lok Sabha seats clearly indicating the mood of people to carve a separate state. Indira Gandhi, who was at the peak of her power then, called the leader of TPS Channa Reddy, and made him join his party into Congress and made him the Chief Minister of entire Andhra Pradesh. However, an All-Party Agreement of 1969 was agreed to protect the interests of Telangana as a concession.

Those agreed upon formulas were immediately flouted by Andhra people. Now, the Telangana people took the legal route. Their objections were upheld by Supreme Court which asked Andhras to vacate those positions that were illegally acquired.

That’s when Andhra people, who knew that Indira Gandhi was dead against all new states, blackmailed Indira Gandhi by asking for a new state for themselves in 1973. Now, the same Andhra people deride Telangana Movement calling it divisive politics. Indira Gandhi’s government, in a clear indication of partisan and discriminatory practices, overturned the Supreme Court ruling, thereby clearly establishing the practice of how a majority Andhra can always snub and suppress minority Telangana in the state Assembly. This continues till today as clearly seen from the recent episode where all Andhra and Rayalaseema MLAs resigned en masse from the Assembly on Telangana issue clearly indicating to all observers that no resolution on Telangana will pass through since they comprise the majority.

Such practices of snubbing all the promises continued. GO 36 of 1969 that promised to position Telangana people in 25,000 that were illegally occupied by Andhra people remains unfulfilled even today. During 1973 and 1985 nearly 60,000 illegal positions were awarded to Andhra people in Telangana region. To rectify this, a new GO 610 was introduced in 1985 with a promise to enforce it within a year, but continues to be unimplemented in spite of repeated demands. Telangana people are left with no option – they have tried the electoral, democratic and legal routes – all of them failed. The current democratic setup does not work for minority when the leaders are clearly aligned along partisan lines. Nagarjuna Sagar dam lies in Telangana region. While the original plan included two canals, one to arid and dry Telangana, and the other to the fertile and inundated Andhra region, only one canal was constructed towards Andhra region, while Telangana continued to remain arid, dry and impoverished. All the recommendations that forced the government to construct the new canal were struck down by the majority and partisan Andhra leaders. The coal mines and power plant of Singareni lie in Telangana region, but the backward districts of Telangana get no power. There are thousands of villages and towns in Telangana where they get two hours of power during entire summer, while people of Andhra experience small inconveniences. Out of 10 government medical colleges in AP, only one exists in non-capital Telangana while 7 of them are based in Andhra-Rayalaseema. The examples are galore. The discrimination is seen in irrigation, in industry, in roads, in canals, in dams, in energy, in education and in employment. There was consistent and methodical discrimination against people of Telangana for all these years. Newer generation of Andhra and Rayalaseema who had no role in this discrimination find it hard to understand why Telangana people protest for a new state. They have absolutely no idea what has happened in the past and see the present situation in isolation and conclude that Telangana people are brainwashed by their wily and cunning politicians.

Many people discredit Telangana movement by sullying its leaders. They believe that this movement is a product of petty politician’s agenda to usurp power. They believe that this cause was invented by politicians to serve their purpose.

They don’t realize that the Telangana Movement is a mass movement and a historical movement going back sixty years and is beyond political parties and their agendas. The sentiment is deep and most administrators, bureaucrats, government employees, school teachers, professors, miners, bankers, and intellectuals, scientists support Telangana cause and seek separation. The Telangana cause is not a result of politicians brainwashing its people, but instead a cause of Telangana people being betrayed by politicians again and again. Even now, people of Telangana rally and support only those leaders who have committed to the cause of Telangana. The day these leaders stop supporting this cause, they will abandon them, like they did when they voted out TRS in 2009 because they did not uphold their promise of delivering a new state. This fight for a separate state is a legitimate one and has an expression in Indian politics which is flawed.

Detractors of Telangana movement are worried about status of Hyderabad. No logical observer would conclude that Hyderabad can be separated from Telangana. It is linked to Telangana historically, culturally and geographically. Telangana with Hyderabad as it capital joined Andhra State with Kurnool as its capital to create Andhra Pradesh in 1956. Asking for Hyderabad out of Telangana is like Gujarat asking for Mumbai in 1960 just because Gujaratis have invested a lot into Mumbai. Being cosmopolitan does not warrant a Union Territory status either. Mumbai continues to be the financial capital of India, continues to be cosmopolitan, is home to many migrants and settlers but still belongs to people of that region. In the same way, Hyderabad will continue to belong to people of Telangana and will continue to strive as a cosmopolitan city as a home to many settlers from different parts of the country including those from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions.

    Conclusion

The history of Telangana after India’s Independence is riddled with false promises and betrayals. Telangana remains marginalized, reduced to minority in their own state, victim of partisan politics, inept democracy and flawed legal system. Telangana remains backward, in education, in agriculture, in industry, in infrastructure, in employment, and in prosperity. Even today, Telangana people are discriminated in their own region. They are seen as inferior, lazy and illiterate. Even the Telangana language is ridiculed and its speakers are butt of many demeaning jokes.

The people of Telangana have a distinct culture, a different history and different temperament in addition to different social and economic status. When one state has two economically and culturally different regions, one being prosperous and the other backward, if corrective measures are not taken to uplift that backward region, there is a great danger that only the prosperous region gets all the attention, funding, new industries, canals, and opportunities, while the people of backward region keep losing out, even in their own region. When such a condition prevails far too long, strong corrective measures are to be taken, and if that does not work, a new state is one of the best solutions. A separate Telangana is an eventuality. Prolonging this outcome will only increase the animosity of Telangana people towards those who oppose it. Already we have seen many such protests in Telangana. Delaying this eventuality will only cause more pain to the region and will not be good for the future of the two states which share the same language. The people of Andhra and Rayalaseema should welcome this aspiration of Telangana people, respect it and make way for a new Telangana.

  34. Guys,

Every website, Every blog, Every news I have seen is just crap. First of all I am from Nalgonda and I lived in Hyd for yrs. People who wanted Telangana or United Andhra, forgetting the revenue to the state. How do you think you will get the revenue to the state. AP is one of the best states in India. Whole point is “IT”. How did India/AP could able to develop rapidly from past decade. Simple.. “IT’. People are just talking about Telengana, they are not thinking about the money which will flow in to the state. Already AP lost thousands of crores to other states just because of this idiotic state seperation. People should understand that after seperation, how will the funds come in to the state. Not from the dams or not from the politicians, cine actors or job holders based of Telangana states. Dudes, IT. Thats the answer. Ploiticians never do anything to the state or country (except for one r two true leaders). How will it matter if someone invest in Hyd and will lose if th state is seperated. I myself bought 2 lands in B’lore and Chennai. It is a huge huge huge loss to both the regions if the state is seperated. There are numerous reasons why the areas in Telangana and Anhra are not developed. Politicians, people, eductaion. If people are really concerend about splitting, what will you do after the split. People should understand that even if there is a seperation in Telangana, there will be still Andhra people working in Telangana region. No one can send every single Andhrait from Hyd/Telangana districts out. Wake up guys. Seperate state is not the answer. Think how to develop the whole state for your family and for better tomorrow. I worked in Chennai, B’lore and Mumbai. No one asked me to leave or no one opposed. This is India people… Don’t act stupid. Think smart. Its just politicians making all the fuss.. Pani leni mangalodu pilli thala gorigadu annattu. If you have no money in the state, no use of having seperate state. Guys, yesterday Microsoft came to Hyd. Today one big huge financial client hesitated to come to Hyd due to our stupid fight for the land. Tomorrow no one will show up and there will be no reason for having seperate state. Wake up people. If you have no money, having land is waste. You need to have money to make money and build a city/state/country. I don’t know when will you understand. Its 2010 not 1950 morons…..

  35. wearebunchofpigs@130

add urself to the list of morons. ur name ‘wearebunchofpigs’ suggests u dont really consider urself a pig but r calling urself a pig and including others in it to generate a sad feeling of remorse while silently pushing ur propagandist nature. old trick. being from nalgonda, anyone from there are primarily concerned with flurosis problem(due to no safe drinking water) inspite of major river flowing through and dam being there. people with flurosis have there bones bent, most of them cannot walk properly beacuse their bones are bent out of shape and some of them cannot move for life. this afflicts ppl of all ages(kids, middle-aged, old-aged) it’s sad to see kids cannot walk, can’t straighten their legs. its estimated 1 million in this district suffer from this disease. goverments (dominated by andhra rulers and some greedy telangana politicians) cannot provide safe drinking water and are consistently ignoring the problem. now in nalgonda (which is ur district as stated) and rest of telangana it is a people’s movement. they r demanding their share of rights, jobs and water and r convinced all these can be achieved only with a seperate state with self rule(not being under andhra or rayalseema rulers. both regions had cm’s for 48 years and only 5 years for telangana). government is full of andhra lobby and is difficult for anyone to push initiatives like irrigation and canal projects in this region. and for god’s sakes no one is asking no one to leave. don’t be part of this propaganda unless u mean to start one(u r poisonous if u are). telangana culture is a cosmopolitan culture not castist like andhra nor factionist like rayalseema. boss business, money, it, does’nt matter when the progress does’nt benefit backward region people. those crores of rupees u talked about where does it go(think).

seperation is not a loss but profit for all regions. concentrated development around a city or a single place is not smart. development has to be spread out. seperation means new capitals, new initiatives in the region, local people around getting direct benfits of these new initiatives. it is wish of telangana people for 50 years to be seperated from andhra(who got educated under british and have aquired their imperialistic tendencies and cunning nature. using it on telangana ppl in the name of language and brotherhood). if language is the barrier for formation i think telangana should pick another language prb hindi or urdu (they can speak these well) or discover a new one to getaway from them.

  36. Response to Jai Telangana@131 ::

    Mr. Jai Telangana,

Thank you very much for your comments. I cannot believe educated people behaving like illiterates. No wonder why there is a huge mess in AP. I think no one will understand now. UNFORTUNATELY, if they give a seperate state, after 2-3 years, you will regret for your decision. You are not looking at the consequences once the seperate state is decided. Its not people who wanted it. Its the politicians who brain washed people. Every one wants power. How can a normal educated person miss this point. I am not worried about seperate state or united state. I am more concerned about the economy status of both the states. One more thing, central govt has to pay huge amount for the state seperation. Its all our money. I still can’t believe people are thinking in an old fashioned way. Don’t say 50 yrs of struggle. That’s stupid. 50 yrs is really a long time ago. Neither Ap nor India was nothing that time. Guys, whole world has changed a lot. India has changed a lot in last 10 yrs. I don’t think I can explain to illiterate educated people. Its hard to explain than to actual illiterate people. I still think we are morons where we couldn’t able to understand or read politicians mind. Where was this revolution when there were serial bomb blast in Hyd. If students cannot understand the economic situation of our state or country, politicians take advantage and do these kind of idiotic mess. When I applied for college, our Govt just saw whether I am BC or OC. Not whether I am from Nalgonda or Andhra. Same with the job application. Irrespective of IT or Govt. Even IIT’s or IIM’s don’t do that. Common sense people. As I told, its hard to explain to an illiterate educated people. Whatever it is, considering all the facts and looking in to economy numbers, I think its good for India and also AP to be as one state. Already companies are not coming and investing in Hyd. Once they split no company will come and invest neither in Hyd nor in Andhra. Its huge loss to both the states (can’t believe I mentioned this). If you don’t have enough money in the state. You cannot rule. Why do you comment on Andhra people living in Hyd. Look at Mumbai, not even 50% of Mumbai are not true Maratis. Same with Chennai. Most of them are from interior TN. South TN is also very poor and under developed. What do you think of B’lore. That’s even worse. There are more non kannada movies going on than their own movies. Can anyone name 10 major cities or 20 rich people in Karnataka. So did Karnataka govt asked every one to leave bcos of Kannada people are not growing ? No. Its good for their own state and look at the funds in the state. If a city is developed, imgaine how many poor families will survive. Another example, I heard that contractors are hiring people from Orrissa and Bihar as daily labors in Nellore port construction. I don’t think people from Nellore are making issues out of this. This is India.

One last thing to Mr. Jai Telangana, if you cannot love your own mother tongue, you cannot love your ****. I hope we all studied this in our great Telangana schools. You are ready to change your own mother tongue. How great. Thanks to you and your great ambition. I am happy that I am not a part of this movement. I wish KCR look in to your blog and give you an MLA/MP seat. Please reveal your details to TRS party. Good luck and all the best in getting your state.

  37. @132

i again repeat with loudspeakers until it reaches your brain(is it working?). nobody is asking no one to leave. did u not read this in my previous post. still u seem to be repeating ur propaganda and shelling out statistics(about other states). do u see anywhere my comments abt andhra ppl in hyderabad in my previous post. y r u so giddy. u r right abt the illeterate educated ppl. when the proofs r right in ur face, u refuse to acknowledge them. (gladly u did not address flurosis in ur district(1 million ppl) but ranting abt econmics. wht is economics when ppl r seriously suffering.).merger in 56 happened on certain agreements and conditions(not an unconditional merger) which includes sharing of jobs and majorly sharing of water resources between regions. all these have been blatantly rigged in favor of one region(andhra). when the very basis of this merger(agreements) is not honored, wht’s the point in staying together. when ppl in telangana r not happy, no rightful sharing of water resources(diverted to andhra) and no proper sharing of jobs(occupied by ppl from other regions, 610 g.o. in the dustbin) and ridiculed for their culture and language, why stay together. it is staying together that ppl regret now. ppl r taking this forward to self rule and better things for themselves.

you seem to be blissfully unaware of the rules. do research. regions r also taken into account for education seats and goverment jobs(lot of chamchas of andhra politicians). there r lot of ppl who r dependent on agriculture. its water which solves their problems. not it or investments. and telangana has enough qualified ppl(which also includes u i think) to take the region front in terms of development and investment. do not worry, we r capable.

and finally abt the mother tongue, it’s not that i do not love or like my telangana slang telugu mother tongue. it’s cuz of the desperation to seperate from andhra.(when ppl like lagadapati(real estate bakasur) explain history(which is seriously funny) and reason out we should stay together cuz we speak same language(cunningly ignoring the prbs of the masses), i puked and made tht comment). i am one among the ppl(for telangana) and for ppl’s movement. u get urself an mla/mp.

    jai telangana

  38. If its only based on Language..why not? Each region has to protect its heritage and that begins with language..I wish Punjabis cared thatr much about their Boli and Literature..but if its based on politics, then perhaps creating a state for the sake of it is a bad idea

  39. wanderer,

it is not only about safeguarding the telangana language and culture(andhra ppl make fun of our slang and potray us as villans in their movies and regular ppl have total disregard and disrespect for us, our language and our culture. lot of local ppl r sick of this behavior) but majorly it is about lives of millions of ppl who r being discrminated. telangana was a seperate state(hyderabad state) from our independence but was merged with andhra in 1956 based on certain assurances failing which telangana can seperate. first src also strongly recommended not to club telangana and andhra(even the commision had certain fears abt discrimination which have come true right from the start). nehru said v r marrying an innocent girl(telangana) to a naughty boy(andhra) if this marriage does’nt work they can seperate. telangana movement has been going on almost right from the start but r being forcefully kept from seperation. main grieviences r water(being diverted to andhra) and jobs(being filled by andhra ppl). v r slowly becoming foreigners in our own land and being treated like a second class citizens. where shall v go if this continues, lot of young ppl in the past have already joined naxalism in the past. v do not want our young ppl to join naxalism, v want them to have better future. this is fight of our survival.

i in no way will b less critical of telangana politicians who played second fiddle to andhra(to safeguard their future at the cost of telangana ppl) coz andhra had more lobby power in delhi and more money power locally. now telangana ppl r taking this movement forward irrespective of their politicians. u can read the background of all this if you google it. and an fyi, andhra ppl r unscrupulous men with sweet tongue. their usp is sweet talk but r badmash with no ethics from inside.

  40. Creating more states creates a bigger government. Size of government increases but the GDP is unaffected (or goes down due to riots and “bandh”s). A developing nation can not afford this. What is needed instead is a decentralized state level government that actually works. Urbanization and making new cities is possible without creating more states.

  41. The people of ‘T’ (I’m T’ite) are somaripotulu, that’s why there are No telangana Actors/Actress, No Telangana Contractors, To telangana SEZ,No Business man, No Financers, etc. I hate drunkards, because in ‘T’ also in Hyd why the Bars are given permission to start at 6 AM & there are people queuing up just like going to some temple. Has anyone taken he right from these so called T’ites that they do not act in Telugu films (Yes u r right there is not a single actor/actress from ‘T’ because they donot have talent because they are somari). U ‘ll find many examples , recently I had some renovation work to be done in my house at Warangal, I was astonished to see the work of a plumber who belonged to Coastal district because he started the work at 8 AM , whereas the Mason (a local person from Warangal) did not turn up till 11 AM (because he is a drunkard/somari as was evident from his behaviour that he had …. early in the morning), so tell me my dear friend have u had any such experience if not just do a little survey & u can easily find out that most the Houses constructed in Warangal/Nizamabad/Nirmal/Hyderabad/Jagatial/Korutla/Ramagundam,etc (also your house if any) are being constructed by these so called aliens(mostly from Guntur/Kakinada), then tell me my dear friend speak out from yr heart & u ‘ll know the truth that why U donot find T’ites in many fileds. Why were these people sleepily watching & had anyone stopped them from acting in films, business, contracts,in building schools like Narayana/Sri Chaitanya, etc, etc for all these years, Where R U my dear friend all these years (till 1990’s there used to be no colleges/not even a place to eat good idli/dosa/wada, etc in Hyderabad), and why are U not opposed to the Gold, Sweet & Cement/Hardware syndicate formed by the Rajasthani Marwadis/Gujarati’s who are looting the Telangana people as most of the adulteration, etc and also sucking the blood of Telanganites with their financing as U will find them everywhere in Hyderabad and also there is a complete Bazar (Battala BAzar) in Warangal wherre these Marwadis are sucking the blood from the Warangalites, etc. Even in KPHB I have seen these people making money with there age old tricks of adultration when my poor Telugite Goldsmith still sitting/resting on pillows & selling pure Gold in the gullies of General Bazar, so it was these people of Costa who came to the rescue of the poor Telugu people that they started the Chandana Brso Jewelers, etc t counter these Marwadis. I think U R not opposed to these Marwadis, etc. Fine my friend, Long live “TELUGU NADU/PRADESHAM” . (In pure telugu ‘Nadu’ means rashtramu/bhoomi/pradeshamu/nela/etc)

  42. venkatramana,

i should have been more specific. i did not mean regular folks of andhra, some of whom indeed really work hard. i meant politicians and bigshots of andhra who r becoming notorious off late with scams and absolutely no ethics. by this i also profess no love for telangana politicians who instead of looking after people’s concerns carried on banchan dora culture with their andhra masters. atleast this movement should be an eye opener for them on many aspects, one of them is self respect(no more banchan dora). also do not ridicule telanganites with ur comparision. they indeed may be far behind in the fields u mentioned. the point is there is no proper mechanism to catch up(educationally and financially backward) and they are being pushed back further systematically. if u insist on comparison then also consider the huge scams, swindling of public money, caste culture etc in the very same fields u mentioned by people of andhra origin. business has its negative shades with people of any origin. i am not opposed to marwadis neither am i opposed to andhrites. you brought all needless examples of business and film industry. this is not about y v r not in these fields. this is about water and jobs and self rule(stoppage to exploitation). understand that. before u or anyone else comment on anything carefully read previous posts. do not deviate. telangana people now believe that their backwardness will be solved, irrigation and canals will be taken up, educational facilities in rural areas all these will come true only with self rule. who is coming in between for this dream to be a reality. andhrites in the name of unity. unity for them means real estate in hyderabad. i sympathise with the feelings of ppl who have been repeatedly cheated by promise of separate state(by present andhra and past telangana politicians) and their sentiments exploited. when the dream of separate state is a reality after 50 years andhrites started showing true colors(ex. naidu, chiranjeevi etc). they are talking unity because their business interests will be hurt..

  43. Response to Jai Telangana….@133.

First of all “Happy New Year”.

I don’t think my brain is working according to you.lol.. Also may be I don’t know or interpret English and not able to follow your or generic English. But I understood your cry here. You wanted seperate state just for jobs and water. But in most of your posts, 131 – “some greedy telangana politicians”, 139 – “no love for telangana politicians”, you know what these politicians are doing. Even when you get your own T state, there will be still water, a major issue in Telangana. You being so mature and educated, how can you rely on these politicians. What was KCR doing when he was in power. First of all how many seats did TRS won in our Telangana ?????? It is people like you (may be 35%) who wanted a seperate state. Not the whole Telangana. If so, TRS would have won all 16 seats including 4 MPs. What went wrong. Why did Telangana voted for other party(s) if we aren’t noticed or developed in our own region. Most of the viewers in this blog are T people and don’t want a state.

Let me tell you something. Open your eyes. There are Govt jobs and private jobs. Not all jobs in the market are Govt ones. If there is a seperate state, may be Govt jobs would be given to T people. In that, people who are born in T region are considered to be T people, though their fathers or grand fathers are from Andhra or some other state. So there is competition there. And coming to private jobs. First of all you cannot demand or force those companies to go out of T-region. Second, you cannot demand to give jobs only to T-people. Its their wish as its their own company. You cannot make your own rules. If so, there will be no companies coming in to T-region (basically Hyd) going further. What will you do if those companies still give jobs only to Andhra people. No one can say not to enter your state as this is India. Also, bear in mind that if there is no money in the state, govt cannot create more jobs oe departments.

Water – Since you are so good in numbers, tell me total number of acres of paddy in the WHOLE T-region. In my district, there are about close to or above 1000 rice mills. The combination of Miriyalaguda and Kodad has the business of 50 crores min(to my little knowledge) every year. Where do you think the whole rice is coming from ??? Imagine the consequences if they seperate the sate. Andhra people are not idiots to send their rice to other state (T). They will build/approve their own mills and send no business to Nalgonda. This is one of the region why Kodad wanted to merge in to Andhra, if you are aware of this. Even if you have water, you need good cultivate land. Basic commonsense. Don’t forget that where there is money, there is power. Best examples, USA, China etc. Under developed countries cannot go and cry infront of countries with power and wealth. For your information, Andhra people did not become rich just bcos of politics played in T-region by not giving out jobs and not providing water. 75% of contractors in Karnataka are Andhra people. Also Chennai and suburbs, and eastern Maharastra. Lot of them were rich even before 1948 (independece). They have money, they invested and got richer. Don’t cry that jobs are not given to T-people. Give me the stats, how many students are getting degree/masters/BE/ME from T-region. Go and look in to IIT and tell me how many AP students are from T-region. Go to any IT companies and look for the T-people ratio. Now a days, its atleast fine. A decade ago, nothing. Don’t tell that the whole system is wrong. It is parents responsibility to make sure their children get eductaion even in govt schools. We couldn’t build our foundation strong, but crying on Andhra people and politicians. I don’t think it is fair at all. I completely agree with venkataramama (@138). T-people are really lazy. Why do you think there are so many young naxals. Bcos they wanted to get money by doing nothing. Actual naxalism started for one reason but eventually it became a trend to make money but not working hard.

Places like Vizayanagaram, Srikakulam, north east parts of vishakapatnam, Few parts of Anathapur,Chittoor are also not developed with no money, jobs, water, schools, roads, even electricity. Why aren’t you bothered abuot those people. Even they are also people. KCR did nothing except fasting, that too with the force of Osmania students. He will not do anything tomorrow. Vijayashanthi made good money in films and wanted power to make more money. What was she doing all these 50 yrs except for acting. Why couldn’t she started Talli Telanagana like 20 yrs ago. As I already mentioned, it is difficult to explain to an illiterate educated person. Not even Eienstien, Bill Gates or even Barack Obama can do it.

My conclusion is, even if the state is seperated, all politicians including KCR, Vijayashanthi etc will not do anything to the T-region. They will make more money and leave the whole T-region to death. That time you will come and start a movement to form your own district (what ever it is) for a new State. This is what going to happen. Every single educated T-ite will regret if there is a new state. Every single illiterate educated will look for other movement to split East Telangana and West Telangana. People have no common sense. Use words like movement, SRC, Andhra people sucking T will make every one heroes. Good luck to you all who wants a seperate state. Atleast there are 60-65% T people who thinks this is wrong. Remember there are 1000’s of students in Osmania. % of people who started all this crap is not even 20%. Students who wants good career, who thinks about the development of country/state will look for more sources to develop not to split by just mentioning their acts/movement. Idiotic politicians, idoitic people, idiotic movement. This will not help the country/state/next generation.

Thank you and Wish you the same. Happy New Year.

This post definitely is enlightening as compared to your two previous posts. I am sorry for the comment I made about the brain part. I did that then to shake you up a bit because you were’nt listening and consistently putting forth arguments about people being asked to leave which is not true. Thank you for not bringing it up again. Coming to your points, first things about politics and elections. I am emphasizing right from the start. This is a people’s movement. Do not equate the sentiment to TRS or KCR and for God’s sake do not bring Vijayashanthi(puking). Please. You are asking about why a certain person or politician did this or did not do that. How do you or I know. I am not their spokesman. But one thing is evidently clear they are in it for their personal gains be it any side. As for elections all the major parties went in with the promise of creating a separate state and at the very least not opposing the creation of separate state. Cong, TDP, BJP, TRS, CPI, PRP. If you look at the verdict it’s split between Cong and the TDP alliance(both of them about 50 seats). How can you tell who opposed what and what this verdict means. I would appreciate if you can give me the source for your statement(only 35% support the movement)

When I meant jobs, I meant government jobs. I am not foolish to argue for the reservations in the private sector. My grouse is about why the government jobs meant for this region is being given to other regions. Even by government admission this is happening. If you do not have your representatives in the government lobby what are the chances of the development works being taken up in the region. Funds are being diverted.

You are back to economics. By your statements it seems you are scared of the wrath that andhra businessmen might unleash after separation. Glad you were’nt there during our independence struggle otherwise you would have argued about economics and India not being fit for independence because of poverty and wrath the powerful englishmen can unleash. It did take us a generation but look at where we are. It’s better to self-rule than live on the whims of the arrogant mighty.

Push is towards major irrigation projects and the canals that have to be built in this region as ours is mostly an agrarian economy and solve the flurosis problem. All the resources are there in the region apart from two major rivers flowing through. Cultivation does not always have to be paddy. There are many different crops that can be cultivated depending on the land. Government machinary is definitely failing in this region staying united. Naxal movement is also due to the failure of the government machinary as frustated people will be easily attracted to raising guns against the state. When the goverment machinery produces naxal movement will die a natural death. I know after separation it will be the same set of politicians but how long can they stay if they don’t produce.

About education you make it sound like we get educated in IIT/BE or get jobs in IT due to the generosity of andhra guys(typical banchan dora mindset). What can I say. Remember the great teacher Ramiah who sent lots of student to IIT from AP. Know his view about the movement. Moving on this region needs more schools and facilities in the rural areas. This will improve things a lot and instill a sense of confidence(will put an end to banchan dora). About the other places I am sympathetic about the conditions there. Even before knowing where I stand you put me in the dock and calling me culprit. I never said anything against them. How do you expect a person in Telangana fight for Uttarandhra or Rayalseema that too without local people fighting for their needs. Local people over there should fight for their rights if they think they are being deprived. I can only express my support and will surely voice my concern along with them(will not do real estate politics). If you know Uttarandhra also wants to separate because they also feel neglected.

This movement should be focused on what this region lacks and what needs to be done for this to be developed. Since andhrites are opposing this it is deviating towards cursing them. This movement should be taken forward in non-violence form.

Found a good article about discussion between students from respective regions.

Jai India Jai Telangana Jai Andhra Jai Rayalseema

  45. I am an andhra “settler” in hyderabad. I started out as “samaikya andhra” crowd. But my coastal region has vast resources and gas in K.G-Basin. None of my cities are even 10% of hyderabad. I want to see them progress to the level of megapolis. This is only possible, if andhra seperates from Telangana(which is a HUGE economic burden).

I want Coastal andhra to be a seperate state, and watch it’s march to progress.

  46. Response to Bhanu Prasad …@143

    Guys,

I don’t know when will you understand. If you cannot do as together, you will never do with a divorce. There is no way any state (T or Coastal or R’seema) can grow if they seperate. There is no way new IT companies will start either in Hyd or other major cities in Coastal or Seema. Even if there is gas or agriculture, that will limit only to certain extent. It will not make/bring the state to upper level in the country. Bcos of our idiotic mess, other states like TN and Karnataka, in South India are getting advantage. Its a huge plus to TN if we split. So that they will have their strong grip in Central. That’s why the idiotic Chidambaram played his role for his state. With that conclusion, our T-lites are happy and thought everything is over. People neither change nor understand. I wish people who wants a seperate state will move out from AP and make the whole state a peaceful state with no hassle. Already our AP has lost almost close to 1600 crores. Does anyone know how much money is that to the State. Does anyone atleast thought how difficult to reach it again. Guys please economics will not develop with a new state. You are losing day after day. There are hundreds of families (in all regions) who live on daily wages/business. Go look around and find out how many of those people wanted a seperate state. How can you miss the human values. All those idiotic T’s and non-T’s who destroyed Govt property has no right to stay in AP. Those are lazy people who has nothing to do. All those crazy Osmania students are not even students. They are supposed to be grown up people with decent jobs. Instead they don’t study and create issues like this where no one is gaining out of this except for losing Govt property and Govt money. Okadu Tha ante inkodu thandana annadanta. One idiot started this and few other rogues supported and created a scene. KCR should have predicted the consequences to the state. Why would he. All he care is to get back to the power and make more money. It is we who have to re pay everything for whatever loss happend to the state. Govt will raise on everyhting and we have to pay all that. Straing from RTC fare to gas cylinder, Electricity etc. Stupid idiots. People think heroes if they stop rails and make bandh. Thu…. I am proud to be a Telugu guy, but sorry to live in AP. Telugu people has very good reputation across the country and also overseas. There is a joke. In US, after C,C++ and Java, most spoken language is ‘Telugu’. If Telugu speaking people doesn’t have unity, what can they achieve to their mother land. Our beloved friend Jai Telangana, wanted to change his mother tongue to Urdu or Hindi (@131). We should be ashamed of ourselves for being in AP. Thanks to everyone. I think this will be my last blog. No one is thinking to do some good to the state/country. Everyone are selfish and making others suffer due to this. You can be selfish to make money or take care of your family. But not spoiling the whole state and make others suffer out of this. Just to let you know, bcos of this bandh, my dearest friend couldn’t even go and see his new born child. He lives in Hyd. He is not rich enough to afford a taxi. Can anyone tell me how hard that is for a person who became father for the first time and have no chance to see his own child. Do you think all those people with T movement can bring back the happiness and missed moments. I felt terrible for him and I never saw him crying. Its all bcos of those stupid idiots who does this. To my knowledge its my friend. Imagine how many people are suffering. All those Andhra people who are doing rail roko’s should go do suicide. Crapy people. Good luck to all of you who are getting T, Coastal Andhra and also Rayalaseema. I wish to hear people making movement to get East Telangana and West Telangana before I die. As Khammam, Warangal and Nalgonda and far developed compare to other districts in T(excluding Hyd and suburbs). Jai KCR, Jai Vijayashanthi (even if jai Telangana puke), Jai Jai Telangana. Everybody go **** yourselves.
