Wake Up, It’s King Khan

Today, I received the video below in my inbox along with this message — “Canadian desi fronted old school r&b-detroit rock. He’s like a mix between fela/prince/ and someone’s cool 70’s desi uncle (not mine unfortunately) sigh…” My interest was piqued. I watched. Then decided you should too.

Oddly, the video reminds me of some of the yellowed photos of the 1970s from my father’s photo albums (minus all the haram activities). King Khan seems like quite the trip. He and the Shrines are touring right now at a hipster spot near you. Who’s with me?

  1. King Khan is AWESOME. Both his work with The Shrines and BBQ is amazing — you should check out the song “Welfare Bread.”

  2. King Kahn is king!!! I saw him at SXSW and it was EPIC…great garage band sound and pushing the boundaries of indie rock. Sorta.

  3. i like it. strangely hypnotizing. like a 1970s bollywood star invades america and does soultrain or something. i even like the retro-bollywood body fat %. nice attention to detail.

  4. yes.. King Khan is awesome. I am gonna go see them live in couple of weeks. I was reading his interview in one of the magazines and apparently his dad had a serious drug problem when he (King Khan) was 17 and so he ran away from his house and started getting into punk rock. He finally moved to Berlin when he was 22 and he put together his first band called the Spaceshits.

Interesting guy, I hear he puts on a wild show. I dont think I would compare him to Fela Kuti or Prince. He is more like the brown James Brown.

  5. Nah he’s the evil love child of Gemini Ganesan and Little Richard. Sings I wanna be a girl and makes good on the threat.

  6. Do south Indians come from more of a liberal culture? Not that I dont know any south Indians, but I never asked them about how liberal their families are. I dont see that many other Indians that make it in entertainment these days and I was just wondering why that is.

The comedians, musicians and actors that are Indian all seem to be south Indian and I was wondering why that is? Are there any influences in the culture that make you explore your artistic side?

  7. Aziz Ansari, dude from “Heroes”, MIA, Russel Peters, King Khan, M knight, Jay Chandra-something, Mindy Kaling from “The Office”, a couple writers from “My Name is Earl, that comedian Hari Konda-something.

That is alot of south Indian domination.

Not that I care at all in any type of negative way, but what gives?

  8. Do south Indians come from more of a liberal culture?

    No.

    MIA, Russel Peters, King Khan

    Russel Peters is Gujarati.

  9. Russel Peters is Gujarati.

He is? I could swear he said his family was anglo-indian from Calcutta.

King Khan rules and so does Screaming Jay.

  10. Aziz Ansari, dude from “Heroes”, MIA, Russel Peters, King Khan, M knight, Jay Chandra-something, Mindy Kaling from “The Office”, a couple writers from “My Name is Earl, that comedian Hari Konda-something.

Lets not forget one of the best rock guitarist of the 90’s Kim Thayil who parents are from Kerela. I think he was the 1st desi to have a number 1 album in the United States when Soundgarden “Superunknown debut at #1 in March of 1994.

  11. He is? I could swear he said his family was anglo-indian from Calcutta.

But neither West Bengal nor Gujarat are in South India.

  12. I don’t think that South Indians are more or less artistic than Indians from other parts of the country – were such the case, the Indian film, music, theater scene would reflect that, no?

p.s. kal penn and anoop desai [gujaratis]; noureen dewulf [marathi]; navi rawat [1/2 rajasthani]; lisa ray [1/2 bengali]

  13. hmmm…can’t play an instrument…can’t really be described as singing, even in the discordance-in-harmony paradigm…must be good!

  14. Pretty much anything on Vice Records is good to rock out with your…tongue…out.

Yeah! Rock out with your socks out!

  15. I saw the black lips vid.
I read a comment on a blog that the nudity may have been ok in the north? the south is more conservative. is that really true? I heard the black lips guy was told that it may have flown in new delhi.

  16. Forget nudity, the Lips are known to treat their front row fans to golden showers. Also, they have totally hurt the local religious sentiments by not playing Roadhouse Blues.
