I get a lot of different requests from you mutineers, and though I am usually not able to write back, I try to help whenever I can. I’ve also noticed that sometimes, I have a few things I’d like to bring up, but they don’t seem worthy of an entire post– asking what days might be good for a New York meetup, for example. So, every so often, I’m going to put up a post called Salmagundi [I like the word so much, it used to be an entire category on the right sidebar of my personal blog :)] and it will contain a few utterly unrelated but mutinous things. Either that, or I’ll use SM’s newly-created Twitter account to ask questions like the one below:

Dear Anna
I was wondering if you knew when Jackson Heights would be closed if they close at all? We are planning on coming to NYC for 2 days as my husband needs a visa. So I thought we would go to Jackson Heights when somebody mentioned that they were not sure but it may be closed on either Monday or Tuesday.

That’s a question from one of our faithful readers. I want to help, because next week is spring break and that’s when they want to go, but I don’t know the answer! I went to Jackson Heights a few times when I lived in NYC, but I never did anything useful, like pay attention. I usually bought pista kulfi on the street (blew my mind, every time…I could do this in America? Don’t hate, I grew up somewhere 98% pale), looked for Hema Malini DeeWeDees and then got back on the subway. So, what’s up Jackson Heights-area mutineers? When, if ever, does brown-town shut down?

Finally, because residents of my favorite city have waited long enough…what…about…a…NY meetup? ๐Ÿ™‚ Stop jumping up and down, I need your help with planning. In the past, we’ve done meetups in conjunction with events, i.e. Central Park’s SummerStage. Is there anything fun going down in the next few weeks? I’m pondering early-April, but if something extraordinary is happening in late March, I’ll see what I can do. Discuss. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. The last weekend in April is the same as the Sikh Day Parade [obligatory gatka video]. It’ll make you feel like you’re back in the pind ๐Ÿ˜‰

No, it’s not a good reason to schedule a meetup, but I figured it would amuse.

  2. A special event, TOMORROW…electroganic 001 on march 14

it’s next Friday, not tomorrow ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I lived in Jackson Heights for three years; just moved out in November.

Jackson Heights doesn’t close. Most of the Indian shops open in the late morning, around 10:30 or so. Some (like the jewelry shops) close around 8:30 PM. The restaurants, markets, and conveniences stay open later. A few of the diners popular with cab drivers stay open all night.

If you are out there really late, you can catch dancing girls at the Dosa Diner at 3:00 AM.

  4. Jackson Heights is open everyday! Clothing & Jewelry stores are usually open at 10:30 a.m. and close a lil before 9, depending on the store. The groceries open earlier and close later. All the eateries worth eating at close by 10ish usually. Yenjoy!

  5. Jackson Heights is open late-certain spots are 24/7 like kebab king- but everything is usually open 7 days a week.

  6. Oh my. I read Salmagundi as Semmangudi….and I thought to myself she is a closet Iyer after all ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Yay! I am emerging out of lurk cause am so excited about a SM meet-up in NYC!!! How about 3 April (Thursday) – it’ll be Basement Bhangra’s 11th Anniversary at SOBs in NYC. Or there’s the night of Zakhir Hussain’s concert (Saturday, April 26 – info @ http://www.heartheworld.org/event.php?id=680) or if late march, there’s an Irshad Manji talk at NYU on Wednesday, March 26 (https://www.nyu.edu/alumni/events/wi.shtml). Sorry I dont know how to add the hyperlinks.

  8. I would really really love to come to an NYC meetup! I vote for sometime in the middle of the month (April 12-13, 19-20). ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. By the way is “sepiamutiny” a corruption of the famous “Sepoy Mutiny” (aka 1st war for independance) ?

Enjoy your blog, keep it up.

  10. id make a ny meet up. mid march is good by me. really any time is good by me…

quit trying to out me, kozhandai ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes. I named it myself, which is why it’s chock full o’ corruption. ๐Ÿ˜€

id make a ny meet up.

Me too, as long as it’s NOT ON A WEEKDAY. I live in DC, so no basement burrday Thursdays for me, KanchB. ๐Ÿ™‚ Here’s the plan-shan: I come up to NYC, inappropriately hug all of you (and grab your kundis if you are especially unlucky…hi NinaPaley!) and then leave, same day. I might be able to do a Friday night event…we’ll see.

  12. A talk about NYC meet-up when I am in Jersey! yay! I drove 13 hours yesterday from the deep south to get to Edison, NJ for Spring Break (pathetic? maybe, but I was mommy-sick) and am here till Sunday. Any chance of an informal meeting really really soon? I am starved for some good sepia company.

  13. I wish to thank all my Sepia friends. Jackson Heights is indeed open. I loved Manhattan. We walked for miles and ate gobialu Kati Rolls. They were so good. We also visited Edison. I must tell people that most shops are closed on Monday at Edison.

    Thanks everybody for the help!

There are no matinee shows on Monday and Tuesday on Broadway. The shows only begin on Wednesday in the afternoon. Otherwise all plays start from the 7pm/8pm showing.
