A quick break here from my Groundviews posts. First, as I said in that last comment thread, the kind people in the bunker said I could stay for awhile longer! I’m excited.
Second, my friend alerted me to a reference to Sri Lanka in a recent SNL skit:
Run the player until about 1:30 before the end, and listen to the foreign policy segment. Yup, that’s a reference to Sri Lanka’s Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam. He’s Sri Lanka’s permanent rep to the U.N. At least, I think he still is. 🙂For those who cannot watch in office (although who reads SM in office? :)), a transcript:
Fake Brian Williams: “All right. With the few remaining moments in the debate, let’s turn to foreign policy.”
[snip: exchange about officials in Russia and Nigeria, and their names]
Fake Tim Russert: Senator Clinton, Sri Lanka’s deputy ambassador to the U.N. Who is it?
Fake HRC: “Oh—oh—it’s Prasad—uh—”
Fake Tim: “It’s a trick question. That post is currently vacant. Senator Obama.”
Fake Barack: [considers thoughtfully for a moment] “I don’t believe there is one at the moment.”
Fake Tim: “Correct!”
That’s KAH-ree-yah-wah-sum, folks. 🙂 As of the end of last month, news stories from reasonably reputable sources were still giving him that U.N. title.
(And it’s Gun-ay-SHAN-an-than, for anyone wondering. Long last names, w00t.)
I object to the blatant discrimination against long first names. And long middle names too. I propose that the last line be changed to,
w00t, indeed!
Heh, I cede the point.
dang. i want me one of those last names. have been living with a bland ‘kumar’ all my life 🙁
you know snl might be onto something here. regular debates are such over-rehearsed yawnfests. i’m all for a spelling bee between the two…or better yet a competitive dance-off (pantsuit not required)
Last weekend’s episode was great– I also loved the Obama Files cartoon
