Cricket: Reebok Hearts Dravid and Dhoni

What, you thought I was a fair-weather cricket pupil? 😉

Mutineer Sandeep sent in this tip after having one of those, “Hey. What the-? Brown??” -moments in front of his television:

Saw this commercial while watching NBC primetime TV, and thought I recognized that typical Dravid earnestness saying “actually, it’s 229 million…”. was kind of surprised when I paused and found desi cricket ishtars Rahul Dravid and Mahendra Singh Dhoni part of reebok’s new ad campaign…

As for other notables in the ad:

Stevie Williams rides his skateboard. Cricket players MS Dhoni and Rahul Dravid run together. Soccer player Thierry Henry and actress Emmanuelle Chriqui are paired. Tennis player Nicole Vaidišová is on the cell phone. Football players DeAngelo Hall and Chad Johnson run together. Track athlete (heptathlon) Carolina Klüft runs in yellow. Basketball player Allen Iverson and football player Vince Young run together. Track athlete Aries Merritt runs across a skywalk. [splendAd]

Finally, something about Reebok to appreciate. 😀

  1. I caught the ad yesterday and noticed the Indian accent, but didn’t pay enough attention to see who they were. Noteworthy indeed!

  2. henry is class, the gooners are crap.

“maybe, but not in a Jacuzzi”. You think they are talking about a new Koffee machine.

  3. this commercial would have been cool 5 – 10 years ago.. now it is a little out of style..

  4. Freddie Shepherd sacked Roeder the day that Sunderland got promoted as champions — they must have been bricking it at the look of determination on Roy Keane’s face! Looks like Allardyce is going to be your new man?

  5. Yeah looks like it. Hopefully he does not use Roeder’s tactic of breaking a losing streak by buying a load of strikers. Need to stop goal rush. Keane is just going back down again. Freddie shepherd is an assface.

My opinion but I think this is the best Reebok ad.

  6. I think Roy Keane is going to do well and be a very successful manager. Will be a very competitive team next season.

  7. Maybe Big Sam will be able to bring out the best in Obafemi Martins (assuming they’re both there next season), which Roeder obviously failed to accomplish. Allardyce should get on over to La Liga and whip those Real Madrid babies into shape!

Poor Thierry, he’s been injured for a majority of the season. I’ve really missed that whole ‘no-smile-no-emotion’ goalscoring celebration he is so famous for.

  8. Off-topic but I was just walking in DC and my way was blocked by the Queen’s motorcade. I waved, mostly because I loved the movie…I promise I have dropped all aspects of the colonial mindset except for royalty worship!:p

Wow, lots of cops! Even more serious than when Cheney rides home.

  9. Martins is already class, he is not the problem it’s the bloody defence. Need a whole new one. Is it just me or does Henry choose the ads in which he is with a hot girl.

It is also good to see the top sports brands using cricketers in their ads. Good for the game. Don’t see it happening in a few months time though.

  10. And to think Newcastle had the first British desi Premiership footballer on their books for one game, before they sent him to Cardiff because they didnt think he was good enough. I hope Michael Chopra signs for a Premiership team after scoring so many goals in the championship. Apparently Manchester City and Everton are looking at him.

  11. chopra that’s the name, spent the last 20 mins thinking of the name.

  12. Martins is definately class, but there is usually a lag with players coming from different leagues who need some time to adjust to the Premiership. An example on the extreme end being “The Beast”, whose rant about the demands of the Premiership was quite humourous: “…The moment you stop to think, someone has taken the ball off you and knocked you to the ground”. Martins definately has the right attitude, and with Big Sam and his team of acupuncturists, astrologers, and Zen Masters, I am drooling at the prospect of a healthy Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins striking partnership. Newcastle’s defence…HA! As long as Titus Bramble is still a part of that defence, it will be very hard to take them seriously.

Chopra has been quite the revelation. 22 goals already this season. I would say that England should call him up to play on the National team, but after they didn’t take Darren Bent to Germany, I am thinking that they actually look for strikers with less than 20 goals a season (that would be my token swipe at the English national team).

  13. We need a whole new defence. New substitute defenders, the lot. There is only so much the best keeper in the world can do. 😉

Haven’t the Indian cricket board limited the number of endorsements the players can endorse after the world cup?

  14. Wow. Two members of the Toon on SM! cough Sir Bobby cough

Soccer player Thierry Henry and actress Emmanuelle Chriqui are paired.

Quite a pairing. As a bleeding Blue, I actually missed Henry this season. I hope he’s fit next season.

  15. Chopra has been quite the revelation. 22 goals already this season. I would say that England should call him up to play on the National team,

He needs to get into the Premiership and start scoring there to prove himself. 22 goals in the championship is good but he needs to make the step up as soon as possible and getting goals at the top level. Cardiff were in the play off positions until the last 2 months then they collapsed, so he won’t be playing with them in the Premiership via promotion which was probably what he was hoping for. If any Premiership team makes an offer he should bite their hand off. Everton and Man City are rumoured to be interested. He’s 23 or 24 now so he has to make the step up soon or get left behind.

  16. rudie #10> I scoff in your general direction

Incidentally, doe anyone else get those Mike ads with Lucas Neill, Ronaldinho and Rooney? I love my Socceroos (and Neill) but somehow I don’t see Lucas Neill as, well, fit to wipe Ronaldinho’s boots…

  17. Why Indian cricket players are included? They are born to lose matches!! I’m very surprised how Reebok folks selected cricket players for their ad. I think Rahul and Dhoni charged very less money for the ad..So that worked out for Reebok!! I just hate all the hype around only cricket players in India. Media is the reason. And money is behind Media. Let the media give some publicity to other sports like Hockey/Kabaddi/Tennis ! Ban cricket once for all!

  18. “I scoff in your general direction”

we may be very slowly and i might add painfully going down, but we are still there fighting. Big Sam is going to throw his aller-dice!! the gamble will pay off. and we will rise and WIN the WORLD CUP!!!! or maybe another trophy that we could actually win.

Indian cricket players are born to give Indian cricket fans high blood pressures.

  19. Everton and Man City are rumoured to be interested. He’s 23 or 24 now so he has to make the step up soon or get left behind.

Of those two, I’d guess Man City cause their attack has been in absolute shambles. I really, really hope he does leave Cardiff and gets regular time for a Premiership club; though, you have to think that Heskey and the Charlton strikers would be ahead of Chopra in the pecking order for strikers. Perhaps, he could go to a bigger club in the Championship that has a better chance at promotion next year? Speaking of which, which club do you figure will take the last promotion spot? I hope its Southampton though I do have a soft spot for Wolves as I was in Wolves when they were promoted- unforgettable sight of dholi’s invading the streets.

  20. rudie: The World Cup. It was a bad season for you, huh?

Gather your stones for NRITechie ;-P.

  21. when is it ever a good season? Not for ten years.

But as a true Toon soldier we fight on!

  22. Incidentally, doe anyone else get those Mike ads with Lucas Neill, Ronaldinho and Rooney? I love my Socceroos (and Neill) but somehow I don’t see Lucas Neill as, well, fit to wipe Ronaldinho’s boots…

It’s just marketing for Australia, targetted advertising so that Aussies see one of their own beside the international stars. Harry Kewell is international class though, if Liverpool can get him fit for next season and he has no more injuries he will be a massive player for them.

  23. I hope its Southampton though I do have a soft spot for Wolves as I was in Wolves when they were promoted- unforgettable sight of dholi’s invading the streets.

I hope it is Wolves because Wolverhampton has a big desi community and there’s a supporters club called Punjabi Wolves and they have lots of Indians who actually go to the match. There was a documentray about them recently. One thing I’ve noticed is that alot of desis are glory hunters. They live in London or somewhere else and support Manchester United or Liverpool. But the Midlands clubs actually get a lot of desi support because they are local teams.

As for Chopra, well I think he’s going to stay at Cardiff if he doesnt get the move to the Premiership side. But if he gets an offer he has to step up and take his chance now. Manchester City are dying for strikers so it could be them. He needs to start playing there as soon as possible against the top teams and prove that he’s as good as he thinks he is. A brown name at the top level will be brilliant generally.

  24. Harry Kewell had one good season with Leeds. After that he has never been the same. He could have been class. Never be as good as he was.

  25. He had a brilliant first season with Liverpool and played well in the World Cup, but his career has been blighted with injury. Let’s see what he does next season, Liverpool need a consistent wide player on the left who can score goals and create.

  26. Well at least you stuck with it rudie c even though they’ve won nothing since you started supporting them. Most Indians in London are glory hunters. On that documentray about desi football fans they showed a pub in Harrow owned by an Indian dude who supports Liverpool which is where all the brown scousers hang out with their cockney accents. And there’s millions of them.

  27. Forget next season, Kewell should be a great fantasy pick this week =) Looks like Benitez wants to play him in prep for the CL final. Also, Kewell has a great opportunity to become the best left winger in the Premiership next year- Giggs is a year older and Robben is frail. It’s his for the taking.

    Erikkson to Newcastle?

  28. “Erikkson to Newcastle?”

noo!! we don’t want 30 subs in a match and play long ball

  29. Kewell played in the CL final 2005 and came off injured, Liverpool won. He started the FA Cup final 2006, came off injured and Liverpool won. I hope Benitez is not superstitious.

  30. To be fair to London desi’s, as kids they probably saw the red team on the telly and started supporting them. Punjabi Wolves have been around for years, so their dads make sure they wear the gold shirts.

  31. and play long ball

Indeed. NUFC just might take on the personality of that scoundrel the manager. Duff, come back to the Bridge!

  32. I can imagine Errikson being a disaster if they appointed him. Sunderland doing a double over him with a snarling Roy Keane in his face. It would be Gullit all over again. Allardyce is made for that job.

  33. I can imagine Errikson being a disaster

Freudian slip or intentional? Either way, thoroughly deserving.
