Should DC Meetup on May 19th or 20th?

collage1.jpg

…because one date or the other, it’s going to happen. In solidarity with the twangier mutineers who are going to paint the dirty dirty all Sepia and whatnot, DC will be hosting its sixth meetup on the very same weekend. If you missed the last one, you are lucky because that means you didn’t laugh so hard that you wet your pants a little and really, who wants to smell like soo-soo? That’s a trick question; you TOTALLY do. I’m practicing my Sunny Leone-impersonation right now, just so I can treat everyone, new and old, brown and white, pre-pubescent and post-pubescent to the goodness of PORN.

You have the choice of Saturday, May 19th or Sunday, May 20th. If it’s the former, we’ll probably do thayir sadham and sambar vada (and MADRAS COFFEE!) at Amma’s; if it’s the latter, brunch at Heritage sounds nice enough to do thrice. Unfortunately, Heritage India only does brunch on Sunday or we’d be contemplating just one venue and two dates.

I’m open to other suggestions beyond Amma, but if you hate on that venerable font of Malayalee goodness, when I give you your inappropriate hug at the meetup, I’ll cut you. So be nice. And just so you know– I stick with these two places not because of the food, but because they are the most indulgent of rowdy-kundi’d mutineers and they have always treated us so graciously.

You may not realize it when you’re sitting there, giddy from giggling and happily making new friends, but doing so would be much more challenging and far less fabulous if we were constantly getting interrupted or badgered to shut up or, well, leave. After hosting nearly a dozen of these in three different cities, I can truly appreciate how special such a chill attitude towards us is (ahem…La Lanterna in NYC) and I want all of you to stuff your pretty faces and be worry-free…that’s how these six-hour marathon conversations work best.

So, vote for your preference in the comments below. 12:30 pm on either May 19th or May 20th (or much later on a Saturday), what do you-all say?

  1. a) PORN.

    b) Let me just pre-emptively state that I don’t know when the next NYC meetup is; I know we met Memorial Day of last year, but I’m not sure if people are going to be in town for this year’s holiday…is there anything amazing going on in the next few weeks like SummerStage, that we can mutiny around?

    c) San Francisco mutineers, I promise, the next time I come home, you can show these right-coasters the true meaning of the word “mutiny”. You’re the ones who set the bar so high in the first place, you know. 🙂

  2. Flipping heck, meet up’s happening n’sync!! These meetups sound better and better, wishes I could be there, London salutes you!! have fun.

  3. I can’t tell if Anna’s for real pretty or just one of those girls that’s cute but is just really photogenic.

Someone do a recon at this meetup thing and report back.

Indeed, make sure someone does that to Abhi at the Houston meetup, too. He sort of reminds me of Toby Maguire…someone do a recon at this meeting and report back. That’s just as relevant and necessary as any appraising of my exterior, if not moreso!

  5. 3 She really is pretty. Trust me on this one.

Ooh and besides being pretty she is also the greatest person I have had he pleasure of meeting IRL.

Kallan, kallan kashavu mundu on fire!

  7. hey pondatti,

    How’ve you been.

And sweety you want to sit this one out. Come back tomorrow and see how many other people agree with me.

Now run on along and make sure you watch the street BOTH sides before you cross. Kitteyo?

Wow, all the way to comment #3 without commenting on a gal’s looks! What a gem you are.

Next time? It’s always next time. @=)

Any idea on when you’ll be back in the Bay?

  10. I’ll be back home in Houston that weekend…I want to go to both meetups, but I think that might be kind of difficult.

  11. I’ll be back home in Houston that weekend…I want to go to both meetups, but I think that might be kind of difficult.

That would be impressive … like Phil Collins in Live Aid!

Out of town that weekend, unfortunately.

  12. FYI: to the two of you who requested the weekend before…that’s Mother’s Day. 🙂 So go see your Amma, and I don’t mean the one in Gtown, yo.

  13. That would be impressive … like Phil Collins in Live Aid!

That’s right DTK, keep the 80s alive! Incidentally, I was in India the summer of 1985 and while they did offer coverage of Live Aid, it was all the artists I had never heard of. I was completely heartbroken at the thought of missing Sting, Madonna and all the other artists in their hey day.

  14. Wow, all the way to comment #3 without commenting on a gal’s looks! What a gem you are.

Right. Because that comment was obviously completely serious and the first thing that men generally look for in a girl is personality. You totally busted my evil plan Ms.Wollstonecraft.

I now have a mission to fulfil at the H-town meetup :D. I don’t like Toby Maguire, though.

  16. poop on a stick!!

We’ll be out of town that weekend, traveling the wild blue yonder to see family and friends far and wide. Double-dang it, this sucks! I laughed so hard last time, and I had to leave so early! I swore to myself I’d be a regular from now on. grump Okay, fine, but my name is first on the DC7 guest list, y’hear?

    Have fun, beautiful people!

Gosh Anna, you make it so hard, I mean difficult, not to come, I mean, not to visit with you. But God bless you for having these Meetups, and one of these days I will make it. Don’t want to miss your impersonation, among other things, though I’m sure it will only be better the next time. And BTW, Sunny Leone’s name is an allusion to Sonny Corleone, of course. Haven’t seen any of her movies, but her agent sure has a great sense of humor…

  18. Will Sunny Leone be at the next SM meetup.

Also Anna, is it possible to make Sunny Leone a guest blogger here on Sepia Mutiny. I think other reader of Sepia Mutiny would think that this would be a great idea.

  19. b) Let me just pre-emptively state that I don’t know when the next NYC meetup is; I know we met Memorial Day of last year, but I’m not sure if people are going to be in town for this year’s holiday…is there anything amazing going on in the next few weeks like SummerStage, that we can mutiny around?

It’s New York. You don’t need an event to mutiny around :).

  20. but I’m not sure if people are going to be in town for this year’s holiday…

Nooooooooooooooooooo! Not the Memorial Day weekend! As Pooja says, this is Yankee town babyyyy! You don’t need no reason to party. Or to Mutiny!

  21. Flipping heck, meet up’s happening n’sync!! These meetups sound better and better, wishes I could be there, London salutes you!! have fun.

rudie_c, and other London mutineers, care to have a London meet-up? unofficial of course…I’ll be in London June 11-25. Let me know (email me back channel-kenyandesi2@gmail.com)

  22. Anna – you rock for setting up another one so soon after the last one! Count me in, with a preference for Sunday (too long since I last ate at HI), but Saturday @Amma’s (G’town, I presume?) would be fine as well. Tiny chance I’ll be out of town that weekend, but I’ll know over the course of next week.

  23. Hey chocolate mutineers,

Mayur just reminded me that I forgot to post a bit of an update this morning– since almost everyone who has RSVP’d offline (including people flying in from other states!) has stressed that they are busy then, I’m taking the Saturday night option off the table. 🙂

The majority of people who have responded either on/offline specified a preference for brunch at Amma’s Wegetarian in Georgetown on Saturday…so if you haven’t piped up yet, do so now or forever hold your Mysore masala dosa. I think May 19 it almost is…

  24. Boo! I’ll be in NC that weekend for a company event.

It’s like I’m fated to miss the ones at Amma’s Kitchen. I’m always available for Heritage, somehow. Some North Indian god is trying to give me non-veg hints.

  25. This is so totally, completely OFF TOPIC. However, when thoughts of Neyyappam are conjured, only Anna comes to mind. Anyway, I need advice: Last night, I decided for some reason that it would be a good idea for my skilless and clueless self to whip up some Neyyappam from this here recipe. Now, my question is this: should the “batter” be more like a dough that you can roll into balls and pat into flattened discs and fry up almost like a poori? Or is it supposed to be some light, liquidy pancake-batter type mixture that you pour into the kadhai? Mine were more the poori type. And oh man, the smell of sizzling hot, smoky ghee really does permeate the whole living space, doesn’t it? Goodness gracious me!

  26. So glad you asked! I had tried this about 2 weeks ago. Pancake batter consistency. But I added a pinch of baking soda since the first batch was a little hard. After that they came out so fluffy. It is pretty easy. I just mashed the bananas thoroughly and added it to the jaggery liquid(use very little water), then added only rice flour and some frozen coconut and cardamom. Yummy!

  27. Anna ,thank you for effort . I would like to know if sepia readers will be invited for the forthcoming DC meet up and if so I will be glad to hop in .

    Arun.

  28. Hey,I messed up last time:

Namrata on December 16, 2006: oops…as a longtime lurker i had wanted to attend the DC meetup with a friend, and emerge from (self-imposed) purdah. we RSVPed on the earlier post (brunch at rasika), but i guess we missed the boat. maybe next time. have fun y’all.

Finally, I may have my act together. This time I (+1 friend) might be able to make it, barring catastrophe (which is possible since me mum is in town). So is this on?

Also, many thanks to the kind hostess for organizing.

  29. Oh, it’s on. It’s on like MF Donkey Kong.

1pm. Amma’s. This Saturday, May 19th. Prepare to watch me bounce off the walls once my second Madras kappi kicks in…the inappropriate hugging, it might get violent. 😉

  30. Anna, you seem like you could use one right now, so here’s an inappropriate hug. Consider it in lieu of actually being at the meetup! 🙂
