Cricket: “GO BOPARA” indeed!

Yummy Ravi.JPG Well.

All I have to say is thanggod Shodan-san commented all off-topic in the wrong thread, because if he hadn’t, I would’ve never seen this delicious bit of Punjabi mancandy. MeOW. The second Sikh to play cricket for England after Monty??? That TOTALLY deserves a post. Well, that and I would like to stare at his picture some more; I’m sure other mutineers will too.

FYI- all of the below is from his wiki entry (because it’s Holy Wednesday and I’m late for church!):

Ravinder Singh (“Ravi”) Bopara (born 4 May 1985, Forest Gate, Newham, London) is an English cricketer who plays for Essex. Although originally a specialist batsman, he is now improving his medium-pace bowling and developing into an all-rounder. He is the second Sikh to play cricket for England, after Monty Panesar.
Bopara made his first-class debut for Essex in May 2002. In 2003 and 2004, he played several matches for England Under-19s, including in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2004.
In the 2005 season, he scored 880 first-class runs, including his first first-class century. He also hit 135 in a non-first-class match against the touring Australians, putting on 270 for the second wicket with Alastair Cook…
In January 2007 Kevin Pietersen sustained a rib injury in England’s first One-Day International against Australia, keeping him out of the remainder of the series. Bopara was called up as his replacement, and made his ODI debut on 2 February. Later that month, he was named in the England squad for the 2007 Cricket World Cup,[2] and he played his second ODI in England’s second match of that tournament.

More soon…if only so that there can be more pictures of cricket-playing yumminess. 😉

  1. again, there are more than a few people in the world who can’t understand the difference between making a scholarly observation and making a anecdotal observation. pot meets kettle is obviously one of them.

  2. Woah, I leave work at the dot of 5 (and yes, to get to church for a Maundy Thurs. service) and things blow up. Murli is in fact a work colleague. I have been reading this blog for 2 years but have never posted because well, I’m fairly computer illiterate (check my gaff on the abhi painting in the indian restaurant story post). I alerted my lankan buddy to this blog as I thought he might find it interesting. I then posted and challenged him to do the same. If you have noticed, our genders, race and VIEWS are wholly different. And our tone/writing style differs. What would be the point of Murly posting only to argue with himself? As I said, I appreciate the term Desi, and hope to one day embrace it too. I’m just not there yet. Plus, his moniker was chosen purposely to irk me, I’ll wager. Knowing fully well that I hate Murly – he’s a formidable bowler and my nemisis. Good thing my church has computers. I’m going – the service is going t start in half an hour and I want to be in a prayerful mood, not contemplating why the first time I decide to post on my favorite blog, I’m accused of being a troll.

  3. and another thing, i never said that there’s anything wrong with being ignorant, materialistic and fond of exploring the substance-experience medium–those are simply characteristics i became familiar with over the 20 years my family ran a bharata natyam camp attended almost exclusively by wealthy brown girls.

that definitely skews my observations but then again–they are anecdotal. there really isn’t any reliable social research to suggest that those characteristics apply to the whole population.

  4. There’s your damn IP qualifier too.

Shouldn’t you NOT be swearing in church? Since we are tempting you to such awful sin, I’m shutting this thread down.

If you’re telling the truth, my apologies to such a long-time reader; we welcome everyone, especially those who follow the rules. If you happen to be part of the ONE CASE where two people are sharing an IP and engaging in behavior that was previously displayed ONLY by trolls, then as I said earlier, I’ll happily eat my words. Until then, I’m not changing anything about my approach to moderating this space– if we hadn’t done so in this fashion, you wouldn’t have stuck around for two years. Peace.
