You, Too, Can Take Your Brownian Crisis To Prime-Time

As luck would have it, while at the frigid ND bunker and prancing around in nothing but her tropical New Orleanian wear, your intrepid guest blogger caught a cold and was forcibly isolated from the other monkeys and community computer for a week. Eeek achoo eeek! Hey, the New Orleanian cold front of 75 degrees and 80% humidity just hit yesterday, and this macaca yearns for a mint julep on her sunny porch.

While mired in the hurricane-force sneezes and sea of wadded-up tissue paper, cable TV overcame me and I fell prey to such eye-searers as As The World Turns, Dr. Phil and America’s Next Top Model. Dear Supreme Geek Council, please do not oust me from your favor for this transgression. Your humble servant was merely … ummmm … getting to know the enemy … yeah, that’s it.

Anchal Joseph of Homestead, FL wishes to go beyond model immigrant; she wants to be a supermodel. This 19-year-old sports flawless dark skin, ass-length hair, blue-tinted contacts and a desire to show her people that dark women can walk that catwalk, too. With tears threatening to evict her fake baby blues, Ms. Anchal informed Tyra Banks, Jay Manuel (a planet in the neighboring galaxy is missing its weirdo) and J. Alexander (and I do not quote), “Where I come from, light skin and light eyes are preferable to dark skin and eyes. I want to show them that I am just as beautiful.” Fair enough. So, why the blue contacts? If you want to win on your looks, where is the need for the prop? Then again, Anchal is the only one out of 36 who doesn’t transform into a vavoom covergirl when adorned with that other crutch – lots of makeup. She looks pretty much her beautiful same. (Aside: Check out this definition for anchal)

Conversely, the only personal features I find appealing are my brown skin and black eyes. My hips could use several circumlocutions of the block and 5’4″ isn’t anything to write Elle about. This isn’t to say that my extended family has risen above the inanity of Anchal’s experiences; in fact, I’ve been on the receiving end of such remarks for 12 more years than her. My dark skin has never bothered me, even when met with reproachful stares from the kuppai that populates my end of the South. To each her own pathology or just another plea for Reality-TVTM attention?

Speaking of this past week’s TV, was it the NyQuil crooning or did a segment of Chaiyya Chaiyya open a scene of the Smith premiere?

  1. I think the Japanese are smart enough to relize that they will never be able to conform to the “club.” They are in fact very conscious of being japanese, discourage immigration to japan and have no intention of slyly whitening themselves. Once again, you are putting a little too much trust in the power of whites to exert mind control over others. Did you grow up in some all white town where people called you paki or something ? I don’t mean to be offensive but you seem to have this tremendous pre-occupation with skin colors, white people, and race and seem to have this view of whites as securely masters of the world with others in crouching servility and desperate to imitate the white folks.

  2. Anand, The personal attacks you make are very revealing – attacking my nationality, implying I have a personal axe to grind, calling me a ‘crackpot woman’. This behaviour is not at all inconsistent with your bigotry, I’m afraid, and changing your statement about white-black pairings to include ‘most’ and not ‘all’ is a pathetic attempt at introducing nuance into your bigotry.

  3. Anand, You are the one who, servilely, believes white skin to be so desirable that hot black men will pair up with ugly and generally undesirable white women to have access to it. The only servility here is in your mindset.

  4. RE: Don’t forget, the largest mountain chain on the face of the earth is in India/ Nepal – the mighty Himalayas. People live there – like in Leh, they trek day in, day out. Most of the sherpas in Nepal are women. They are the toughest climbers on the face of the earth.

While I saw many women and children porters(for lack of a better word) along wtih men in Nepal, the vast majority of sherpas(guides) are men. The Nepalis do make a distinction between porters and sherpas. It was amazing the amount of weight they carry in their baskets(upwards of 130 lb) supported only by thin straps and a headband. Even some of the older children, let alone women, can carry more weight than the average in-shape westerner could, and climb at a fast pace. I agree though that Nepalis are truly the best climbers on Earth. Most just don’t have resources to go around the world climbing mountains just beacause they are there.

An interesting experience for me was that I got better treatment as a brown tourist than the white tourists. Nepal is down with the dark skin.

  5. I have mentioned that the preference is general and not absolute since the first post I made about the skin color issue.Go back and read harder. I think the bluntness of the debate is getting to you and since you are unable to withstand honest debate, you want to retreat to your politically correct bunker. Anyway, its is a fact that you are a woman, it is a fact that you are a “canuck” (hardly an “attack” on your nationality; no more than a “yank” is an american or a “brit” is an englishman), and your obsession with white people and their alleged power over the minds of millions of non-westerners is very bizarre and symptomatic of a “crackpot” or altered state of mind. You inhabit a very strange and easily offended world indeed full of mind control, desperate internalized images of colonialism..a very harrowing and odd world. I would definitely recommend that you get on some xanax or lithium.

  6. the world would be a better place if we let beyonce and bipasha basu lead the way. I, for one, would love to be behind them. LOL. Ain’t that the truth? I never got it when people said Kate Winslet (image not entirely SFW) was fat.

  7. Anand,

You’ve never seen DQ so you have no idea what she’s like, so please stick to real arguements and not character attacks. Its unpleasent to watch.

  8. My favorite part of the episode was when Tyra turns to Nigel Barker, who is half Sri-Lankan, and says something to the effect of, “You’re Indian; you know what she’s talking about.”

pooja: that was my fave part too… had to rewind my tivo 3 times to make sure i understood her… tyra is a bimbo plain and simple or has no cajones… (aka when nicole ritchie was on her show–per the best week ever via vh1–and said ‘why do people make fun of skinny people? we don’t make fun of fat people’ (tyra wore a fat suit once on her show..and was made fun of..but she didn’t bother to cough that one up to ritchie)–anyhoot, bimbo or no bimbo, that girl has made an empire and has more moolah than most of us here… props to her people for that one! cha-ching!

  9. Sahej I am all for logic and reason, however DQ started this little personal battle when she said it was “bigoted” if you notice the fact that white women dating black men tend to be of the type not considered beautiful by mainstream America. I think the “racist” or “bigot” label gets thrown around a little too easily and most often by brittle people who can’t handle a debate that offends their oh-so delicate sensibilities or disturbs the imaginary world they like to inhabit.

  10. Anand,

Maybe bigot is a word that is thrown around too frequently and I can see how someone would react to it. My apologies to you, as an uninvolved third party if you’ve been misaccused of bigotry. not having read your opinions in detail on this thread I can not say what I would think of your statements of course. But nonetheless, my apologies still at your offense

  11. While I saw many women and children porters(for lack of a better word) along wtih men in Nepal, the vast majority of sherpas(guides) are men. The Nepalis do make a distinction between porters and sherpas.

Yes, I should have meant “many are women” too but it is a significant number if you are talking about world class climbers. Even in that category, they are significant number of sherpanis (a women sherpa). Even in an Everest climb, they are often carrying the load till the final summit (pen-ultimate stop). A lot of sherpas have summited Mt. Everest.

However, in a daily life, just working and carry load/ wood in farms, roadside, country side in Himalayas then – “most” shepras are women is not wrong. That was the jist of my argument for day to day life in Himalayas.

PS: I am using “sherpa” instead of “Sherpa” in my discussion. A Sherpa (with capital) is a race of Tibetan origin. Often sherpa = Sherpa but not always.

  12. When women talk about looks they turn really evil and just point out the most meaningless flaws on each other. When guys talk about looks it comes down to will you bang her or not and call me dumb but the guys way of evaluating beauty is a much better way.

  13. An interesting experience for me was that I got better treatment as a brown tourist than the white tourists.

oh there are benefits indeed to being indian … i always seem to have the inside track with the ethiopian/eritrean crowd at the car rentals (is it like an extended auto family or what?) – nothing exceptional – but little rules that they bend to bring sanity to the world – it could just be exceptional customer service – but there’ve been two occasions when the guy behind the counter’s asked me – “are you indian?” – i like to believe we are regarded as the benign guys of the world plus i’m canuck – my niceness perception just goes through the roof… the stereotypes help. i dont want to control the world man.. i’ll leave that to the folks down south of here (and DQ). 🙂

  14. the world would be a better place if we let beyonce and bipasha basu lead the way. I, for one, would love to be behind them.

I’m with you Manju. I love women who have bodacious bodies, not just skinny chicks with breasts. Tyra now that she’s not modelling is thicker and she looks amazing. The likes of Tyra, Giselle, Heidi all have warmth to their faces, I dislike flat looking faces like Kate Moss and god someone give her a burger, chicks with ribs showing are disgusting.

I really don’t believe at all that this boyish skinny girl look is a gay man driven initiative. After being in the industry for so many years I’m strongly convinced that it’s Hollywood that drives it. Remember when Friends first came out, the girls were fuller and didn’t look so emaciated. Towards the end of the show they were all so ridiculously skinny you could see their ribs. Think back to the models of the 80s and early 90s, Naomi, Cindy, Claudia, these women were by no means like Kate Moss.

  15. The issue of whether one prefers a particular physical attribute to another depends a great deal on what that physical attribute is culturally associated with. Examples of such relations include preference for well fed girls in most parts of the world, wide hips, for these correlate to some social, economic or biological advantage, here wealth and ability to endure pregnancy. These preferences change as with anoxeric models for that corelates to economic well being, this being the case in mostly developed nations. Similarly the case with Africans changing their preferences for darker partners to ones who are fairer, depends on their exposure to what is considered economically sucessful.

  16. if you notice the fact that white women dating black men tend to be of the type not considered beautiful by mainstream America.

I was ignoring this before… but really, this is some BS. What you are probably seeing is a function of class. Poor black men DO tend to get with poor un-kempt women. A phenomenon that occurs regardless of race. Unfortunately, a lot of black men are poor so you see that often. BUT, when you are talking about black men who are educated, have good jobs, and are attractive, then that sloppy white women crap goes out the door. Black men DO have taste and they do realize their worth. None of my black male friends (all of whom are educated and doing something with their lives) and collegues have had relationships with these ugly white chicks. Actually, many haven’t made a habit of dating outside their race at all. Honestly, stop trying to make it seem like black men are the worst of the worst in the dating pool. The truth is that black men who have it together tend to be able to pick from the finest of black, white, and (increasingly) other groups of women. Stop hating.

  17. I’d be interested in trying a little experiment…is there any guy out there who can HONESTLY say they find Anchal better looking than Katrina Kaif (see link above in post #85)? And by that I mean, is there any guy who, given a choice, would rather sleep with Anchal than with Katrina (let’s put this in terms guys really understand!) The reason I’m asking is because it seems to me some people defend a certain look (and/or disparage a certain other look) for politically-correct reasons rather than their own true gut instincts/reactions. Women can chime in here too but women (for the most part) judge female beauty differently (less viscerally) than we do so I’m more interested in the guys’ reactions in this case.

  18. My vote: Katrina Kaif***. She has it more together. Right now, every billboard in India is either Ash or Soha Ali Khan or Katrina.

I think Anchal is OK, just OK. I find her face very wooden. She may repackage herself in few years.

*** Katrina is not my the favorite but your vote is confined to Katrina vs. Anchal

  19. A couple of things to say here:

It’s funny when Anchal’s pictures was fist posted here on SM, many said she was ugly. That was the intial reactions here, while when I went to an American blog, the intial reaction there was that out of the whole bunch, only the “Indian girl” looked like a model and that she was beautiful. It’s ironic that the features some of us whine about are the same ones that Americans and Europeans find appealing.

    Also, WAY OFF TOPIC:

Anyone really think Salman really abused Ash? It seems like he was emotional lover type but judging from the scars on his body (ahem I casually obeserved) it’s seems he was more the sucidal and self-inflicting pain type than the abusive one. Or does Aish’s words simply seem more palpable than his? This rumor bothers me because there were a lot of unproven claims about this story that were taken for facts to the point that Salman is know widely accepted as the girlfriend beater.

  20. see link above in post #85 Dude, in that picture of Katrina, you can see …., oh well, we all know what you can see. You are biasing the audience. To be fair, let us go with this versus the picture at the top of the post.

  21. I’d be interested in trying a little experiment…is there any guy out there who can HONESTLY say they find Anchal better looking than Katrina Kaif (see link above in post #85)? And by that I mean, is there any guy who, given a choice, would rather sleep with Anchal than with Katrina (let’s put this in terms guys really understand!)

As Kush pointed out, Anchal is just starting out. To be fair, you should go with someone dark, but better established(okay, this sentence sounds real funny). For example, Halle Berry. I don’t think her non-Indian descent should matter.

  22. If there were ever a thread that desparately needed Razib-the-athiest-girlwatcher, this is it. Lot of misconceptions above.

  23. Anand – it is you who began with the insults ‘get out of your little Canuck existence’, ‘crackpot woman’, and who are now telling me to get on lithium. Good God. Evidently it is YOU who are unable to withstand honest debate. The only thing I have said to you is that you are a bigot, and frankly, anyone who makes the kind of statements about black men/white women that you have eminently qualifies for that label. The most obvious sign that you sense the weakness of your position is your dismissal of me as a crackpot PC Canuck.

  24. Hello,

This is Anchal and Katrina. Both of us are reasonably pretty in our own way and both of us would cause heads to turn in a social situation or walking down the street. However neither of us is strikingly spectacular compared to so many other women. If beauty really is in the eye of the beholder why this need for a cheap contest to see which of us most guys would sleep with? Accept that some would find Anchal hotter and some Katrina. Just because someone doesn’t find Anchal hotter than Katrina doesn’t mean they are automatically a racist and just because someone finds Anchal hotter than Katrina doesn’t mean they are automatically being politically correct.

And Amitabh, this is Katrina speaking. I am a bit insulted that when Dharma Queen mentioned Salman’s tartlet, you immediately thought of allegedly hot me and not the allegedly not so hot wife of Salman Rushdie. Being associated in your mind with the word tartlet is not exactly a ringing endorsement and calling me hot doesn’t make me feel any better.

Finally, neither of us would give any of you guys a second look so stop this madness.

For the record, after a comment like that which has been long overdue on this thread, I’d holla at both of you. 😉

  26. She got that hot village woman features. Makes me wanna be a bad bad zamindar.

  27. I am all for logic and reason, however DQ started this little personal battle when she said it was “bigoted” if you notice the fact that white women dating black men tend to be of the type not considered beautiful by mainstream America. I think the “racist” or “bigot” label gets thrown around a little too easily and most often by brittle people who can’t handle a debate that offends their oh-so delicate sensibilities or disturbs the imaginary world they like to inhabit.

Anand, it offends my oh-so delicate sensibilities when people spout bullshit as if there is a certain truth behind it. The statement I bolded above is an example of said bs. Instead of inserting this imaginary “mainstream America” into your comments it would be more appropriate to say that “you” are the person with this opinion. And please don’t use the word “debate” so loosely.

  28. The question isn’t really whether Anchal is beautiful or not, but understood that there is where the thread would go. I reiterate: If Anchal thinks herself beautiful on the merits of her own dark looks, why the contact lenses? Again, was the tear-jerker moment just a way to get attention to herself? Dharma Queen, this is why I wasn’t surprised when commenters didn’t refer to her hotness, until you brought it up.

  29. However neither of us is strikingly spectacular compared to so many other women.

Katrina, Katrina…please don’t be so modest.

  30. If Anchal thinks herself beautiful on the merits of her own dark looks, why the contact lenses?

which person on this blog does not have an insecurity about at least one physical trait of theirs? models are also human.

  31. Sumiti:

which person on this blog does not have an insecurity about at least one physical trait of theirs? models are also human.

me! I’m short, pudgy, hairy, and don’t really give a poop about it.

But I don’t think her contacts are about insecurity. You don’t find yourself on reality TV as a model if you’re insecure about your looks. I’m fairly certain she knows she’s attractive. I don’t think she knows she’s an idiot, though. But hell, she’s only 19…she won’t figure that out until she’s 28 or so, anyway. And that too, only if she’s lucky.

In the meantime, I’m sure she’ll have an awesome life as a human poodle, flying around in private jets and raking in the big bucks. I sincerely hope she develops some synaptic activity at the same time. That would make her actually “hawt,” as opposed to just another stupid-but-pretty-face.

  32. which person on this blog does not have an insecurity about at least one physical trait of theirs? models are also human.

I guess you don’t get the hypocracy of it all? You want to prove to the “evil” community that dark skin is cool, but you yourself don’t want to expose your dark eyes. Ultimately regardless of how dark her skin might be, the second she puts that contact lens on, she looses her authenticity. Isn’t that what she wanted? to prove that her authentic self is good enough to a community that supposidly doesn’t respect it. Just a thought. May be she’s not deep enough to think along those lines.

  33. Again, was the tear-jerker moment just a way to get attention to herself?

In that process, she threw an entire community under the bus. Thanks Anchal, You go girl!!!

  34. Again, was the tear-jerker moment just a way to get attention to herself

DUH! of course..now tyra can push her to ‘better herself and love herself for the color that she is’….and then tyra can pat herself on her behind for making this world a happy place…. do i hear a nobel prize nomination?

  35. Anchal is beautiful although she probably paid to get her titties done. I love it. Shallowness, embrace me. Amen.

  36. she’s fine. i think i said that already. it’s outstanding how many people decided to dis her looks, though. I feel like people are a lot more willing to be critical as fuck about a woman than they are about a man. maybe i’m wrong though, as i’m sure someone will point out how they were critical of the dude from Heroes.

beyond that, I really don’t think we should expect too much. This is the most mainstream of mainstreams. So the blue contacts are to be expected, I guess. Maybe Anchal will grow out of it.

  37. This is so off the topic, but I just heard/saw Chaiyya Chaiyya on Smith and was thinking it would have been better placed in the beginning scene in the museum. Just sayin’.

  38. Anchal is beautiful although she probably paid to get her titties done. I love it. Shallowness, embrace me. Amen.

I think it’s great that she has dark skin and she is pretty…she looks like she naturally has a moustache though, and coloured contacts on dark skin are TACKK

  39. Anand – it is you who began with the insults ‘get out of your little Canuck existence’, ‘crackpot woman’, and who are now telling me to get on lithium. Good God. Evidently it is YOU who are unable to withstand honest debate. The only thing I have said to you is that you are a bigot, and frankly, anyone who makes the kind of statements about black men/white women that you have eminently qualifies for that label. you go! sister.

-arm outstretched and jigging the head like left and right –

nobody calls canucks crackpot – and nobody evah disrespects the PC sauce

  40. I’d be interested in trying a little experiment…is there any guy out there who can HONESTLY say they find Anchal better looking than Katrina Kaif (see link above in post #85)? And by that I mean, is there any guy who, given a choice…

I’d like to try a little experiment meself. Any woman out there who would even consider sleeping with Amitabh and Anand or would you rather remain celibate for life?

What is that? No one? C’mon aren’t bigoted, gangly, nerdy desi men who objectify women attractive? You mean these two wankers are condemned to a life of just that-wanking?

  41. DesiDawg, I’ll quote Dharma Queen as an answer to you:

It can’t be warded off without ridiculous measures (ie I’m hot! I’m really hot!) so I won’t bother.
