Reminder: NYC Meetup is THIS Sunday, the 13th!

Poor Nina Paley.jpg Oy, it is already Tuesday the 8th, which means that the NYCSM meetup is merely days away. There is much to plot and despite what a few of you have commented to me privately, I do NOT think that whatever we have come up with thus far is either “complicated” or, ahem, “a mess”. 😉 Really, since those of you who raised such concerns are NEW YORKERS, if you would like to throw in your randa paise, FEEL FREE. ItÂ’s your time to shine.

To refresh your drinks memories, the meetup is occurring this Sunday because Talvin Singh, Asha Puthli and a few other amazing types are performing for FREE at Summerstage, in Central Park. The show is from 3-7pm but “doors” open at 1:30; that is when a few hyper-dedicated souls have offered to mark our territory stake out a prime spot in the shade, slightly away from all the craziness. I would just like to state here that as a quondam sunbather (UC Davis quadÂ…holla if ya hear me), I am abiding by this arrangement because I want to hang out with as many of you as possible; I am in no way buying in to Ignorant Auntie and Cruel AuntieÂ’s bakwas about how if I let myself get a tenth-of-a-shade-darker, no boy will EVER look my way and I will die alone, my corpse half-devoured by wild dogs (yes, that last bit is from a much-loved filmÂ…but sadly, S + C Auntie are NOT similarly fictional). I reject all of this colorist stupidity. 😉 However, I wholly support a pleasant day spent getting faded in mutinous company.

Here is what we need to know, somewhat urgently:

  • WHO is coming on Sunday? This directly affectsÂ…
  • WHAT to bring, as well as how much of it.

Once we sort all of that out, memorize this: sadly, we have decided NOT to rendezvous at the bar around two. Instead, please meet us at 1:30pm at the park entrance at 72nd and 5th. The sooner you arrive, the sooner we can meander over to one hell of a picnic. Throwing the keys to Lil Cease is probably not necessary since they won’t allow us to bring alchohol to this event.

Joan, Zimbly, Pooja and I are all going to be there, as far as I know. I have linked to our pictures, so if you get there late, peer at all the Summerstage fans anxiously until you locate us (or our doppelgangers). Alternatively, just listen for the loudest, most obnoxious group possible and follow the sounds of laughter and screaming (not that I am in ANY way endorsing ice fights or similarly immature lunacy).

Do you have any other comments or questions? That is just what the thread below is for—- NYC meetup-related shtuff.

p.s. You DCers and EssEffites will each get your own posts in the next few days, that way we can keep this, um, organized (as if such things are possible with the brown). Now who is in and what are you packing in your “dry” pick-a-nick baskets?

  1. You mean this ? I like the one with 4 compartments. Chor and sambar at the bottom followed by chor-chammandi, chor-meenkari and last but not least chor-moru. My Dad used to take it to work 🙂

    Cliff

  2. simple chor, mor and urzhilakarengah merrukaparatti (now I want a nap: that’s “aloo sabji” for you Northies) tasted ten times better on the road.

Vaazhakkai merrukaparatti is yummy too, no? Now you are making me miss home!

Stop it STOP IT – you’re going to make me cry!

For all you uk azn underground fans, Talvin will be playing a set at the knitting factory sunday night also

  5. Its not a real tiffin unless there’s curd rice involved with mango pickle.

I’ve spent the last 30 minutes scheming, dreaming up ways to get rice, mor and mango pickle to the meetup. I got nothin’.

Cocopuffs- what’s the status on those baked goods? 😉

  6. i’ll be speaking with asha puthli and dj spooky, two of the protagonists in sunday’s event, today on “Soundcheck” on WNYC radio in new york, between 2 and 3 pm (probably the second of the show’s three segments). check it out on 93.9 FM, AM-820, or online. you can also download the segment later by going to the show’s website.

    peace and hair grease!

  7. A N N A – the goods will have to be baked at the concert, i think the oven of choice will be dutchmaster brand. Sorry i have no time to make my secret recipe, maybe next time. shoot me an email if you want to help me cook.

  8. long lines will start by 1:30; be late & we’re not getting in until maybe 4 pm — so meet in the Line; don’t waste time at the Park entrance — OUTERNATIONAL opens, Asha Puthli closes, Talvin Singh in between; big fan following DJ Spooky throughout

Hmmmm. Maybe we should meet wherever the line starts at 1…

Considering I’m going to run into you as early as this weekend I’m going to say it anyway. Everytime I hear you on Soundcheck or in for Brian Lehrer or anyone else, long before you came to SM I’m pretty useless in the workplace. If I get fired during these episodes I’m going to name you in the lawsuit. Otherwise you were brilliant this afternoon. 🙂

Hmmmm. Maybe we should meet wherever the line starts at 1…

Annabanana make up your mind and I’ll be wherever you decide. I say one person gets in line as they get there and everyone joins him/her. But I think we’ll all get beat up if 20 Mutineers were to cut in front of everyone with that one person. I’m just sayin…

  11. in hindi, mor means peacock, chor means thief. in malayalam however, it is pure heaven. chor is rice. pure white rice, boiled and drained to perfection. and mor or moru for those of you who need the u at the end to understand the slight inflection at the end of the word, is too complicated to explain. ok, i’ll try. its all based on yogurt. I should use the right word. curd. The easiest way to explain in in an american frame of reference is to call it a yogurt based curry. What people commonly call pachamor (plain mor) is buttermilk with curry leaves, bits of green chili, onions and salt added for taste. Very refreshing on a hot day. and excellent for a light lunch with some varatha meen and pappadum. Regular mor is served with chor, poured over it and used to provide a little flavor and viscosity to the individual rice grains when gathered up in your hand. Regular mor is made by mixing up some spices, mostly turmeric for the color, and sauteeing onions in oil, and stirring the mix into pachamor and stirring. Then the whole mixture is set over a low fire and heated while still being stirred till steam rises from the top. Once that happens, we let it cool down while still stirring and then pour it over chor when chor is served. Notice the stirring. This is so that the curd doesn’t curdle. If that happens, throw it away and start over.

If anna gets any chor and mor, maybe she’ll share.

  12. Thanks Zimblymallu. I have had it before. That will go really well with hot mango pickle.

  13. i was told to comment by zimblymallu… will be there with my BF. I dont know the rules… be nice to me!! brown rules!!

  14. Regular mor is served with chor, poured over it and used to provide a little flavor and viscosity to the individual rice grains when gathered up in your hand

As Zimbly can attest, the true yeggsperience of this heavenly treat is best savoured when licking the errant drops of moru from the bottom of one’s elbow.

  15. I live in Jackson Heights, so let me know if you want something SPECIFIC from A RESTAURANT here!

Are we meeting in the line? Where will that be exactly (I get lost/confused a LOT)?

    —EMMA 😉

  16. “Are we meeting in the line? Where will that be exactly (I get lost/confused a LOT)?”

THAT and also...how many people should we bring the food for? :) Thanks! This is my first time coming to a meetup..looking fwd to it!! :)

  17. I’m bringing chips and brownies…enough for about six, but that’s b/c I’m schlepping it all on Amtrak. Anything you bring in any amount (especially if it’s chaat or mithai) is already kind. 🙂 Besides, if everyone brings stuff for about 6-8 people, I’m sure we’ll be FINE. Another picnic blanket would be clutch, so we have one for the food, one for humans.

I’ll try to be in line by 1:15 with our JoAT… 🙂 I’m leaving by 6pm, so hope to see you all before then!

  18. Yo, I need to apologize to allo’yall for not showing up this afternoon — I’ve been swamped with work deadlines and ended up writing all weekend. I’ll conspire with a few of the regulars (here’s looking at you Cica, JOAT, Zimbly, Kobayashi, and two people with initials PM) and convene a NYC meet-up sometime soon, ok? You can all take turns whipping me with a wet mango leaf. Maybe A N N A will come back up for that 😉

  19. That was a lot of fun. The only thing(s) missing were (ahem) Mr. and Mrs. Cicatrix. I’m sure they had a fine excuse though, like Manhattan is soooo far away 😉

  20. It was fun. And a few of us made it to an Upper East Side diner for a post meetup-meetup. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s photos.

Man you missed out a gooooodddd time. The music sucked but the mutiny rocks. Host a meetup soon.

  22. sure nina. but thanks for the brief peek at the mass yoga session?

was that ennis in the last photo? nice taste in colors and fabric. and i say this very manfully.

and.. um.. who was that lady in the striped kurta 🙂

  23. The music sucked.

Uhh, I disagree w/ that assessment. Outernational, Spooky and Talvin totally rocked the park. There was some awful electronica act (noise) in the mix that drove me bonkers and Asha Putli was a scene to behold all unto herself. A sixty-something yr old auntie/diva w/ platinum blond hair singing a Gnarls Barkley cover. That’s not something you see/hear everyday. 🙂

  24. was that ennis in the last photo? nice taste in colors and fabric. and i say this very manfully.

I missed Nina’s photos, but if you’re asking about the green on green West African shirt w/ the purple paag? Yeah, that was me.

  25. was that ennis in the last photo? nice taste in colors and fabric. and i say this very manfully.

Ennis was the man of fashion. He had on a green flower printed African/Hawaiian shirt and a lavender pug to match! Props man. I saw him in the park earlier and actually commented “Check out the crazy Sarder he’s da bomb”! He turned out to be Ennis!!

Some of my pics here [LINK DELETED TO PROTECT ANONYMITY – SM INTERN]. Though some were just plain Xrated to post 🙂

  26. Lovely to meet you all yesterday. Love seeing all the photos. Post-meetup dinner was fabulous as well. Hope to see you all soon.

  27. Nice photos by JoaT. Looks like everyone had a great time.

PS – SM Intern: Why was my (jokey) message to Ennis deleted ?

  28. Jai –

Because the only thing worse than having Ennis’ cover blown is having that pointed out publically so that others will notice 😉

  29. awwww..crap. This looks like it was a really good time. Was it a really long wait on line? I was just so hungover tired yesterday morning, waiting in the hot sun seemed head-splittingly awful. Now I wish I’d sucked it up and showed up. My bad.

Mr. Cicatrix wasn’t around this weekend Ennis. His plans changed as well. But hey, next time I’ll bring the fun even by myself 😉

(ps. Manhattan is far away, dammit! Impossible to get to this weekend because I’m lazy the 4/5 trains were effd up.)

  30. SM Intern,

Because the only thing worse than having Ennis’ cover blown is having that pointed out publically so that others will notice 😉

No problem, the same thing occurred to me after I’d posted my original message 😉

It would be a truly brilliant disguse if Ennis actually isn’t a sardar at all, but an overweight 47-year-old auntie from Trivandram. Or, indeed, if he pulls his mask off Tom Cruise/Mission Impossible-style during the final moments of the Mutiny, shakes “his” hair loose, and turns out to be TMBWITW. That would be quite funny. Although probably not so funny for all those laydeez he’s ravaged ravished during his career, using the glamour of being a core Mutineer to attract groupies. But we won’t speak of that.

Again, very nice pics by JoaT. ANNA’s obviously been overdosing on the teeth whitener 😉

  31. Anyone try to register at emusic.com/summerstage? They were handing out cards for 50 free song downloads from Summerstage artists at the entrance of the show but i haven’t tried it out yet. … wonder if Outernational is among the few they offer? They already offer Lady Sov which is cool enough for me. 🙂

  32. It was a great time yesterday. To those of you who received the Duology CD’s I brought out (should have brought more), let me know if you dig the music. I look forward to future meetups. And know that everyone seems to agree that the music sucked, I hope I am spared ANNA’s wrath over the fact that I had never heard of Talvin Singh prior to the announcement of the meetup.

  33. Glad to have met everyone! Once Talvin got the tabla beat going, that’s when the music started.

Oh, and psssst: “ennis” is really my Linu-mashi, every inch of her her 5’2″, 99# (dripping wet) frame resplendent cool, crisp cotton saris. You’re outed now, Mashi. 😉

    Next meetup: Hueston!
