I’ve been working like a dog the past few months & one of my few connections to pop culture has been my beloved TiVo. So, after a day of conference calls & meetings, I decided to vege a bit and watch last week’s Apprentice and check out how Sepia Mutiny’s friend Toral Mehta was doing.
Now, in contrast to Raj who dished up the drama almost from the outset, Toral’s been disappointingly flying beneath the radar and laying low. No longer – last week her fangs were unleashed and my-oh-my what snobby, elitist, east coast fangs they were. A few choice quotes –
“I’m from Wharton …we’re really here to demonstrate work ethic and that’s a different style of thinking from those individuals who have not been trained by large corporate institutions“I would have to say that there are a group of women here [pointing at a gaggle of laughing blondes] who have banded together based on the fact that they have no work experience. I like them all on a personal level, I think they’re cute people if I had a secretary job or an administrative job, I’d happily hire any of these people”
Oh Boy. Now that’s a good way inspire folks. Note to The Toral, it’s one thing to not forget the little people as you rocketship takes off. It’s a different thing to tell ’em they’re little before your ship has even left the ground.
Last week’s episode had the contestants teaching a bunch of retirees about the post-vacuum tube world of electronics and entertainment. Toral did her best to play Vanna White & demo a big screen TV to the audience… alas failing miserably. Navigating on-screen menu’s apparently isn’t her forte –
“Look I’m an investment banker on wall street, I put together multi-million dollar deals. I wouldn’t say it’s below me but it’s not something I’d generally do”
Something tells me that’s precisely what she’s trying to say.
Predictably, when it was boardroom time, the other gals seized upon this and other failures. Nearly to a T, they ganged up on The Toral and singled her out for The Donald’s trademark viper strike “you’re fired.” Toral launched back in a catty, vixen-like manner demonstrating why realityTV is often better than a soap opera –
“I have a substantial knowledge of finance, accounting, and marketing. I have impressive work experience. The top real estate developers in the city know me. You have in general a group of people with unimpressive work experience, [and a] poor professional education…”
Toral was, however, quite literally saved by a thread. Her one ally in the room happened to be that week’s project manager (who, as Toral informed us, went to U. Chicago and hence shares a certain pecking level). The PM had a soft spot for Toral and brought in 2 other gals instead – a nearly fatal decision for the PM which Trump seized upon –
“Toral has to be smart … she went to a school that’s truly the smartest people in the nation for business … the Wharton School of Finance. Now that doesn’t mean she has common sense and it doesn’t mean she has other things”“you can say what you want about Toral…. the fact is that the team can’t stand her and she has brought the team down… she certainly wasn’t an inspiration to the team”
Trump’s insight goes to prove the old aphorism that some of the greatest judges of human nature aren’t shrinks but rather, bar tenders and successful salesmen. You’d better watch this week’s episode – if Toral’s team loses, it’s likely to be her last. And I betcha she’ll go down in delicious flaming glory.
It appeared clearly yesterday that Toral is not smart at all. If she were, she would have come up with a better excuse than the “religious cultural” BS. Nobody bought it (and all the people here know that it is actually a BS argument)
Hey if you want to come up with an excuse make something up that can sell.
Ok, so to make up for Toral I think we need fresh represent for next season. I nominate DesiDancer.
OYBBB, you nominate me for career suicide? aww shucks. I’d get fired the first day, when I tell The Donald he really ought to do something about that squirrel on his head. I think I’d let you down, yaar.
Conversation last summer- Friend: why didn’t you audition for “So You Think You Can Dance?” me: because I know I can dance.
As obnoxious as Toral was last night, she had a point – it was not her idea that caused the team to lose. If she was an unenthusiastic supporter, so were others. But, she did not want to take any risks herself, but was always willing to point the faults of others. While that may make her a typical Indian mother, it will not promote her in the business-world.
And the attempt to hide behind “cultural and religious” issues – lame.
Just watched the online video of Toral’s firing. I don’t blame her, I wouldn’t get into that costume for the life of me, I mean you got to be kidding!
I think the lame thing on her part was giving up on the project manager role. That was not at all consistent with her prior statements as to how the others were fit to be her assistants etc.
Looks like Toral has her website up and running:
http://www.toral-mehta.com/
DesiDancer – Good people get fired too ya know. But what matters is how and why you get fired. We all know that The Donald is a ‘clown’. Plus I doubt he would fire true talent – not even if you jumped on the boardroom table and did your hip swinging dance moves…..Melania who??
Now on another subject, I think the Donald was quick to fire Toral cause she probably reminded him a lot about himself – atleast back in the day. He was probably the male equivalent of Toral 🙂 Not that she didnt deserve it, but we all know that the Donald took a personal initiative in this one.
Oy, the worst was when she said something like she didn’t want to embarrass my family. I wanted to yell at the idiot box: “Girl, you are on national television with Donald Trump and you were in a cheesy Hindi movie. I don’t think you need to worry about embarrassing your family anymore.”
And, on her website it says: “Both Donald Trump’s and Sir Richard Branson’s top choice….” Is she making her round on the reality TV circuit?
Are you sure she can command that type of premium?
ash– loved your comments you made my day…
oral toral is her porn star name, remember? thats what the bloggers call her on my blog
cheers mate
I have to wonder how NBC and the Trump Organization can claim to have “top talent” with a piece of trash like this on the show. And considering she was ever a part of the brokerage industry she should be barred from it for life.
The ‘oral Toral’ comments are a cute rhyme and all, but they’re pretty lame IMO (and I’m not a fan of Mehta):
If it’s a non-Christian name, let’s make fun of it
If it’s a woman you don’t like, call her a slut
They’re pretty much in the same vein as Dixit/’dick shit!,’ except the people making them happen to be desi. Not cool.
All the other snark is more than welcome 😉
that does it. this “classic” car– hell, let’s make me a ’56 300 SL– with a half-“goo” godson is banning you for your idiocy and your racism. not in my house, you don’t.
I did think Toral was quite dishy but she clearly lacks common sense. She said several stupid things like i have not been giving it my all, i can’t wear the costume due to religious grounds, etc. She 100% talked her way into getting fired but she was probably going to be anyway. I am glad she didn’t wear the costume b/c those white chicks just wanted to make her look stupid. What she should have done was be project manager but with her idiotic team they would not have won anyway. I think Toral is not a creative person and that is what almost every task seems to be on apprecntice (a marketing task). why the hell is donald trump trying to sell everything under the sun ????
Raj from Apprentice II was very entertaining but Toral is pretty hot minus the big ass nose.
Anyways based on Toral’s website she is going to milk this thing for all it is worth
What? Being a hindu prevented her from wearing a funny costume? We have an elephant and a monkey for Gods, for crying out loud. And people only need see Kathakali to get the role of costumes in Hinduism.
I think what is the most hilarious thing about Toral’s website is, if you go to the “links”, she seems to have links of the websites of each of her fellow Apprentice 4 candidates, EXCEPT Kristi and Felisha. Now, while I agree that Toral really did herself in by mouthing off and as such, by the time Trump said “you’re fired”, I was even hoping for it, I also say good for her, not linking to their websites. Apparently Felisha’s website is just a bunch of photos of her anyway…I’m not even sure whether or not Kristi has a website yet. Anyway, Toral was wrong, no doubt about it, but I don’t think they should have crossed her the way they did. It could come back to haunt them – or, at the very least, I doubt that it will help them.
Of course, I could be wrong.;)
I feel bad for Toral. She was in bad company. It’s true, someone like Toral wouldn’t be caught dead associating or networking with the likes of Felicia and Kristi. Kristi was getting knocked up at age 16. Someone like Toral is honestly even too good to work for Trump. Tell me how many Ivy graduates and bankers work for the Trump Organization. Most are Trump-fearing, loyal employees of mediocre intelligence and education.
Toral V/s Columbia
Because I’m a really, really big loser and I enjoy looking up the criminal histories of people that I know or hear about, I found this little gem:
http://decisions.courts.state.ny.us/search/query3.asp
In the search queue, type in “Toral”. The case against her will be the second one listed. It’s Columbia University vs. Toral… apparently she is in default.
The complaint spells her name as Toral K. Mehita with an “I” in her last name. Could still be her though… not sure how many people there are with such a similar name that went to Columbia.
God, I love the power of the Internet.
Now that read it carefully – Actually, it’s Toral Mehita v. Columbia, and as such, it seems that she may be the Plaintiff, That’s the way I read it now. It’s too bad that the case has been ordered sealed. That order was just in August, 2005. Convenient huh?!
And I believe that the motion being “granted on default” just means that whoever filed the motion in the case had it granted because the other party either didn’t file something to challenge the motion or didn’t show up if a hearing was involved. So “default” isn’t necessarily related to a default in payment of some kind.
Since the document also references a discontinued case, the motion may have been a motion for discontinuance, which I think means that one of the parties to the case requested the case be dismissed before a judgement was rendered.
I wonder if she sued Columbia for kicking her out, but the folks at Columbia, being a whole lot smarter than she is, had the case thrown out.
Ugly
The fact is that Toral’s out there doing something. Don, Jr. himself hibernated in Colorado for a year fresh out of Wharton doing nothing and stays out of the media.
How did she manage to get herself into a Bollywood film having been raied in the USA? Does her family have some bollywood connections?
Somebody has to know the real story of why she got kicked out of columbia right?
ASIAN INDIAN ASSAULTED BY IONA COLLEGE STUDENT
FORWARD THIS TO EVERY SOUTH ASIAN AND ANYONE ELSE YOU KNOW:
There are corrupt cops everywhere, even in New York. Especially in downstate NY. In New Rochelle, NY the cops are younger and more corrupt these days. They are biased towards people of color. For example, there’s a local college called Iona College (the butt of jokes amongst northeastern colleges- Culture: Rude, mean, vindictive and lazy. Diversity: No minorities – very few). The NRPD are protecting the criminal activities of Iona College students (especially the white ones), while they reprimand innocent people of color.
Iona College is trying to bring up their reputation by covering up for their students’ misbehavior and antics. If it should be known for anything, it should be for being a party school and nothing more. Iona College Student, (5’8″ Italian-American white male) in New Rochelle, NY (Westchester County) Assaulted a female (5Â’1” Asian Indian) and Got Away With It. New Rochelle Police Department (NRPD) interviewed the Iona College student and believed him and his friend’s story (another Iona college student who later submitted a false witness testimony to the New Rochelle District Attorney‘s office) that the female attacked him and arrested the female 13 days later, who was severely kicked several times, was bleeding and had to go to the hospital, get x-rays and come out with a cast.
She was lucky not to have been internally bleeding resulting from the impact of the severe kicks she had received to the face (which she blocked with her arm) and ALL OVER the body, including her CHEST. Her blood had dripped down as her body had been kicked to the ground, the kicks were so forceful. She had screamed a blood curdling scream nonstop but none of the neighbors had come to her rescue and the attacker’s friends continued to make negative comments about the victim after the student stopped. When she had told the police officers that her blood was on the ground, they didn’t believe her and said that it was the attacker’s blood. It was not. It was the victim’s blood, from being SCRATCHED and kicked several tmes.
There are photographs of the femaleÂ’s injuries. District AttorneyÂ’s office (Jeannine PirroÂ’s New Rochelle office) counter claimed by their own account that she could have “fell down the stairs.“ Any medical examiner/investigator who sees the photos can tell she was kicked numerous times by the Iona College student. When the victim had tried to file charges, the NRPD and District Attorney’s office refused to take her claim. When she had first shown the NRPD officers that she was bleeding, on the night of the attack, one of the officers (white male) who was smirking said, “So, what!” and continued to yell at her after she was attacked, immediately siding with the attacker before questioning her.
Victim is a graduate of a top university and has worked for years. Victim had been receiving prior harassment from attacker. Attacker slandered victim to neighbors (predominantly lower class whites) and police for filing noise complaints against him, and had damaged her home quite a few times. VictimÂ’s car was later vandalized, with the passenger window broken, after her attack. NRPD refused to adhere to victimÂ’s prior complaints of attacker and instead sided with attacker from the beginning because he was an Iona College student and white. NRPD even inquired about victimÂ’s ethnicity with one of the attackerÂ’s roommates during one of her noise complaints. For what reason would the NRPD ask about the victim’s ethnicity over a noise complaint?
Many of the neighbors (predominantly lower class whites and Italian-Americans) who have never met the victim or do not know her, had already made judgement calls and sided with the attacker prior to the attack. The attacker had fueled malicious rumors about the victim to the neighbors. Attacker is a compulsive liar and a great faker. Not a surprising attribute of an Iona college student. But for many years victim’s family had always been scrutinized by white neighbors. Victim’s family is the only Asian Indian family amongst those neighbors.
NRPD is Protecting Criminal Activity of Iona College students. NRPD may be getting paid higher salaries to protect Iona College students from criminal records. NRPD officers also have children who go to Iona College. Some NRPD officers are graduates of Iona College and support Iona students’ misbehavior. Iona College is predominantly white and is not as selective as they claim. Iona College and their college council members are paying off NRPD to protect college’s reputation. Iona College students, despite their high misbehavior and disrespect for the neighborhood, considered “innocent.” Iona College is not considered a very good school and is not one of the top schools, but it is bringing in more money for New Rochelle and is very expensive. Iona college does not have proper housing for their students and pay thousands of dollars to building managements to house their students next to regular tenants. Some tenants are sick and tired of having to live next to noisy, loitering college students. Iona College is paying off thousands of dollars (more than $12,000 each) to several New Rochelle Building Managements to house their students next to regular tenants who have to put up with the noise. But certain neighbors are siding with Iona students, especially ones that are noisy themselves. Iona College students are getting away with speeding, car accidents, loitering, noise, etc., without being reprimanded.
These students are getting off easy for the crimes they commit. Racism involved: People of color are being reprimanded more and ticketed more in New Rochelle by the NRPD. NRPD have a strong bias towards certain groups, especially by race. There are ALOT MORE corrupt stories similar to this one in New Rochelle, happening to others.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0322936/ Tagline: The first 35mm color Hindi feature film shot entirely in the USA
It might have been as simple as showing up for an open audition. There was an open audition for the recent film by Mira Nair, The Namesake. Of course, considering all the major characters in the film baing named Patel, I would not rule out some sort of connection.
I will hazard a guess here, perhaps the supporting documents for her admission were found to have been faked (the popular story being she copied a paper, which I find hard to believe, will not result in expulsion in most cases). It happens a lot more than the desi community acknowledges.
Atlantastar, what exactly is your point? Extrapolating this little news story to reality
Iona College Culture: Rude, mean, vindictive and lazy. Very low % of Asian Indians.
UPenn: Ivy League. 25% Asian (another 25% Jewish). Compare this to their combined representation in the U.S. population at 5%.
There is a sig. correlation between education and income
White median income 2001-2003: 47k Asian median income 2001-2003: 55k
Asians have the highest levels of education and income in this country. In this sense, Toral was the perfect stereotype of South Indians.
Highest levels of education and income are attained in big cities, so someone from downstate NY or Georgia isn’t exposed to and doesn’t understand successful American South Indians. People often dislike the unfamiliar. I believe that Rebecca and Toral bonded, because Rebecca went to school with and worked alongside people like Toral.
Uh, I think Atlanta was just trying to talk about the racism against Asian Indians (sometimes mistaken for Middle Easterners or called terrorists), that is so hidden from America. An Indian female was assaulted by a white male and got away with it and similar things have happened before in that particular area. I think his point was that although most places have a high percentage of whites in their universities (which is very evident and does not need any explanation), this particular town and college is using it to their advantage in a CORRUPT manner. But thanks for the extrapolation
MikeNYC represents the average American. Folks are blogging about a part of this world they cannot ever comprehend or appreciate. Toral was not a mere BROKER. Felisha & Co aren’t even qualified to be brokers. Guess what, the banking industry is filled with elitist, vain, condescending jackasses. Vain men get promoted. Vain women get called bitches. Kristi did a great job shrieking BITCH! But the funny thing is that Toral really only expressed her elitism in the taxi confession. It wasn’t Toral who said in the boardroom that all of these women are incompetent. Which by the way is true.
