Jay Sean’s Me Against Myself

The British Asian Pop sensation Jay Sean has been making waves in the UK in recent months, beginning a few months back with his hit collaboration Dance with You, and now with the release of his top 40 full length album, Me Against Myself, which debuted at 29 this week on the British Charts. Featuring the top ten charting hit singles, “Stolen” and “Eyes on You,” Sean is tipped to be the British Asian to actually be the one that finally makes the crossover into the mainstream. Lets hope so.

The Telegraph (UK) too has praise for Sean, whose real name is Kamaljit,

[for many] the best tracks will be two hidden ones, from his earlier incarnation, including You Don’t Know Me, about the difficulties of trying to make it as an Asian in the hip-hop arena. The title track sees Sean dissing himself for making music ? presumably the poppy stuff ? that “you pretend you are into”. The intro skit has his producer-mentor Rishi Rich telling him, in a posh English accent, to cut out the conscious stuff, that UK hip-hop doesn’t sell and he should write songs about girls. Clearly highly talented, and currently attracting the attention of demi-god producer Timbaland, it will be fascinating to see how Sean resolves his musical schizophrenia.

The Independent (UK) ran an interesting, yet cliched profile of Jay Sean, entitled: “Betwen Two Cultures”, about ten days ago. Click here to read it. Regardless I want to offer an SM Big Up to Jay Sean!

  1. after hearing “nachna tere naal (dance with you)” and all those great rishi rich collabs, I had high hopes for jay’s debut album which I picked up last week. other than three really strong tracks :: “eyes on you”, “one night” and “stolen”, the album on the whole is pretty weak especially when jay attempts to rap. you’d be much better off with raghav’s “storyteller” which is what brit-asian r&b should sound like.

  2. I agree that Raghav’s album was really good for straight desi influenced R&B (a personal favorite is that tune “Ain’t Nobody.) I also think Raghav did an amazing job at bringing the desi R&B sound to the mainstream as well.

But, I also think Sean’s album is pretty good, and disagree with your assessment on his rapping skills. I actually was impressed with his rapping on the album, (I enjoyed his eminem influenced Me Against Myself) and when he rapped on some of the live sessions he did on some of the British Asian radio stations (he has a really good unplugged desi influenced rendition of Big Pimpin).

  3. Hey guys… dudes i think the comparsion between raghav and jay saen is not needed. they both have very differnt styles!!! Big up to both these talented young achiever!!! But at the same time i cant help but put in my personal opinion.. I think Raghav’s Rocks!!! He’s got a Great Voice and personally Im enjoying listening to ‘storyteller’ a lot more!!!

  4. hey people..i think jay sean is absolutely gorgeous! i think he’s better than raghav!no offense!! jay sean’s track ‘stolen’ n ‘eyes on you’ is fantastic! jay sean love u loads!! n keep it up with tracks! ur stunning!!!!!
