Naveen Andrews stars in ‘Lost’ on ABC

Shaggy-haired actor Naveen Andrews (Bride and Prejudice, The English Patient, The Buddha of Suburbia, Wild West, Kama Sutra) is starring in a new ABC series, Lost, satirically described by the New York Post as a show about an airplane crash on an island where only models survive. Andrews plays an Iraqi dealing with racial prejudice from his fellow survivors. Can’t say they’re not trying to be topical.

I wouldn’t have expected this of the U.S. film market vs. that of the UK:

The actor told [Asians in Media] recently that he has moved to the USA because opportunities for non-white actors were greater out there.

  1. Wha? Opportunities are better in the US? I guess if you’re playing middle-eastern villains, but otherwise… doesn’t BBC have serials that are mostly Indian??

Not to say Andrews is playing a villain in Lost. I’m going to forgive him for Kama Sutra and allow myself to watch the pilot. If for no better reason- JJ Abrams, the show’s creator, once used a short exchange in Gujarati to fair effect in his idiotic spy show Alias.

  2. Slow start, but it might be okay. Sadly, Naveen Andrews only got about five minutes of screen time… and the previews seem to hint that he might bite the dust sooner rather than later.

  3. Good news for Naveen, ABC:

    Boffo start for ABC’s ‘Lost’

    Rick Kissell, Variety

Auds discovered ABC drama “Lost” in a big way Wednesday night, as the critically hailed skein premiered to some of the Alphabet’s best drama numbers in nearly 10 years, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen. Also on the night, CBS’ premiering “CSI: NY” defeated NBC’s “Law & Order” in their first head-to-head matchup.

  4. Naveen andrews is awesome and u guys shouldn’t make fun of him because he is the best on lost and I really like his character. He has a really nice personality, and he is a nice guy in general. Lost is my favorite show, and Sayid is my favorite character, and whoever makes fun of him is retarted.

  5. My prediction was way off. Naveen was not only kept alive on the show- he just scored an Emmy nomination this morning for Supporting Actor in a Drama. Could be a first in the Sepia category, come to think of it.

  6. the usa are obsessed with casting indians as arabs because the american stereotype of an arab is a chocolate brown man with a big nose, which is typically indian not even slightly arabic. They should cast jews or greek or italians to play arabs is more realistic. But to americans indian people are the arabs.
