This was Pixar illustrator Sanjay Patel&#8217;s take on the Hindu Pantheon, done in a drawing style that was hipster crossed with the Powerpuff girls. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sepiamutiny.com\/sepia\/archives\/001348.html\"><img class=picture height=157 hspace=20 src=\"http:\/\/www.sepiamutiny.com\/sepia\/images\/GheeHappyKali_1.gif\" width=161 align=right vspace=10 border=0><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>At the time, Manish observed that<\/p>\n\n<blockquote>&#8230; any kid-safe interpretation of Kali is bound to cross the line into kitsch. [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sepiamutiny.com\/sepia\/archives\/001348.html\">Link<\/a>]<\/blockquote>\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/leeannasthread.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/kali-goddess-of-death.html\"><img class=picture height=150 hspace=20 src=\"http:\/\/www.sepiamutiny.com\/sepia\/images\/Kali-frontview_1.JPG\" width=119 align=left vspace=10 border=0><\/a>Sanjay is now going from 2-D to 3-D. He has a mockup of a <a href=\"http:\/\/leeannasthread.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/kali-goddess-of-death.html\">plush Kali<\/a> doll [via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2008\/08\/12\/plushie-kali-goddess.html\">BB<\/a>], and is in the process of looking for a manufacturer. Presumably, he&#8217;s looking to market this as a children&#8217;s toy, although somehow I suspect it will end up in more hipster cribs than kiddy cribs. <\/p>\n\n<p>This is where my intuitions fail me. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gheehappy.com\/BOOK\/Book.htm\">book<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gheehappy.com\/PRINTS\/prints.htm\">prints<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gheehappy.com\/APPAREL\/tee%27s.htm\">apparel<\/a> all seemed like things that might be purchased by (some) ABD Hindus. Certainly the remarks in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sepiamutiny.com\/sepia\/archives\/001348.html\">comments<\/a> of the original post were pretty positive about Sanjay&#8217;s renderings. <\/p>\n\n<p>Would the same be true about the plushy doll? If not, why not? Here, the fact that I&#8217;m not a Hindu gets in the way of my ability to imagine people&#8217;s reactions. Is there a difference between a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gheehappy.com\/APPAREL\/tee%27s.htm\">children&#8217;s t-shirt<\/a> and a doll? Hindu iconography has long been used for commercial purposes, is this any different?
