{"id":2550,"date":"2005-11-20T12:46:04","date_gmt":"2005-11-20T17:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sepiamutiny.com?p=2550"},"modified":"2005-11-20T11:29:21","modified_gmt":"2005-11-20T16:29:21","slug":"pipe_dream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sepiamutiny.com\/blog\/2005\/11\/20\/pipe_dream\/","title":{"rendered":"Pipe dream"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><em><\/em><\/center><\/p>\n\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0240890\/\"><img class=picture height=150 hspace=20 src=\"http:\/\/www.sepiamutiny.com\/sepia\/Serendipity2_new.jpg\" width=136 align=left vspace=10 border=0>Serendipity<\/a> <\/em>is a pretty lame romantic comedy that&#8217;s a staple of cable reruns, where I had the misfortune of running into it this morning. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabla.com\/instruments\/mizm1.jpg\"><img height=225 hspace=20 src=\"http:\/\/www.sepiamutiny.com\/sepia\/Shehnai_changed.jpg\" width=89 align=right vspace=10 border=0><\/a>Like Bollywood, it peddles soft-headed romantic fatalism in a one-joke script.<\/p>\n\n<p>It does, however, do a very funny New Age parody. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0179173\/\">John Corbett<\/a> <em>(My Big Fat Greek Wedding)<\/em> hams it up as Lars, a self-absorbed New Age musician. This schmuck in a silk kurta plays an instrument ubiquitous at Indian weddings while his hype men play tabla and sitar.<\/p>\n\n<p>As Lars watches the cheesy, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yanni\">Yanni<\/a>-like music video his record label put together, he complains, &#8216;You can&#8217;t fight off an army of bloodthirsty Vikings with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicalnirvana.com\/instruments\/shehnai.html\">shehnai<\/a>. It&#8217;s illogical.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n<p>This little fudge cake of brilliance is probably the only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes.com\/~mgreen\/\">shehnai<\/a> joke in Hollywood history, and definitely the only one involving <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vikings\">Vikings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Serendipity is a pretty lame romantic comedy that&#8217;s a staple of cable reruns, where I had the misfortune of running into it this morning.
