I want to start by emphatically stating (for the record) that I DO NOT WATCH American Idol. I would rather admit to drinking toilet water. However, I really was flipping channels when I came across the cutest sister (19)/brother (17) from Washington trying out for the show in Seattle. I had to stop and watch. Whatever. I do hate myself. Shyamali sang Summertime. Paula Abdul said she was very nervous, but didn’t need to be. Simon Cowell wasn’t impressed, but both Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul said “yes.” Her brother Sanjaya Malakar sang Stevie Wonder’s “Sign, Sealed, Delivered.” Simon Cowell said he was a lot better than his sister. All three judges agreed on putting Sanjaya through to Hollywood. [Link]
You can tell already that the Idol editors are going to play up the whole sibling rivalry angle which is unfortunate since I’ll bet that these two are as close as a sister and brother can get. Even though the judges thought Sanjaya had a better voice (but his sister better stage presence) he didn’t rub it in on camera. Since I am never watching the show again, I’ll count on some of you readers to let us know what happens with these two. I think they are both too shy but if Clay Aiken could get as far as he got then anything is possible.
There have been a lot of desis on TV this week. Good stuff.
PMA: the sikh guy on popstars is fantastic.
It was the same thing in our house, but only in the 90’s 🙂 Whenever an Indian appeared on TV, someone (usually my dad) would excitedly exclaim “Indian, Indian!”. It was like we were playing a game.
These days the fun is gone, but that’s okay. At least seeing an Indian on television is not as much of a novelty as it was in the past.

Malakar the kalakar, Yaaahahahaha
My buddy and I tried out when they had auditions in Jersey. You download the release off the site, and you submit it as you head onto the floor to try out for one of the producers.
“I acknowledge and agree that Producer shall have the right to (a) include any or all such information and appearances, depictions or portrayals in the Program as edited by Producer in its sole discretion, and (b) to broadcast and otherwise exploit the Program containing any or all such information and appearances, depictions or portrayals in any manner whatsoever in any and all media now known or hereafter devised, or for any other purpose, throughout the universe in perpetuity.”
Forever and ever and ever.
I watch American Idol when it has been narrowed to five or six people–then the competition really heats up. I hope to see these two last until then.
What exactly does this mean Kurma, and why are you getting off on it? Inquiring minds want to know…
The day after the American Idol I was stuck in traffic and happened to tune into the Adam corolla show. They were discussing the recent episode of American Idol and especially the Desi brother and sister act. Adam went into this fake apu/indian accent the whole time he discussed them and even sang the Stevie wonder song(that Sanjaya sang)with the accent and a sitar playing in the background.
My point is this, when will desis ever be accepted as a part of mainstream culture when two kids who are obviously raised in the US are tagged with the “outsider/Indian” tag. Corolla has got into trouble before and has had to apologize.
Since I’m fairly one-dimensional about this stuff (and unabashedly so), Sanjaya looks kinda hot.
Sanjaya and Shaymali are so hot. I wonder how close of a bro and sis they actually are…..
the brother is thru’ into the final 24! let’s see how far he goes …
woohoo!! he’s sooo adorable 🙂
I thought Sanjaya did alright last night (compared to the other guys). The clear winners were girls. Hehe, I think he might prevail one more week. More power to desi!
uhh poor kid…who’s still voting for him? I hope a lot of people aren’t just cuz he’s desi. A lot of more deserving people have already been booted off.
I would rather drink sewage water than watch the American Idol. But, I am afraid that Sanjaya has replaced William Hung as the object of white people’s redicule..that is the reason he continues to survive…and he is making Indians look like fools.

I dont watch this show but I believe Hung got kicked off in the first round.
