New South Asian magazines popping up

A new Asian entertainment newspaper that is being distributed by Urban Media Ltd. of Birmingham will go on sale today in England as reported by Asians in Media:

Editor Reena Combo says: “Desi Xpress is the type of publication the young Asian community is crying out for at this moment. The Asian music scene has never been so popular so it’s not only great to give our stars a platform to reach their fans, but for our readers to keep up-to-date with the latest events in the world of Asian showbiz.”

Although I don’t envision this publication gaining any significant readership in the U.S. for quite some time, if ever, I thought some of the more dedicated music buffs would appreciate the heads up.

Also recently launched was Nirali Magazine:

Nirali, which means “different” in several South Asian languages, is just tha–a different kind of magazine for today’s modern South Asian American woman. Published monthly online, Nirali Magazine reflects the identity, needs and interests of South Asian American women all over the United States.

Nirali is your complete one-stop source for all things South Asian. It’s not your typical women’s magazine: While you’ll find the requisite fashion and beauty stories within Nirali, you’ll also see stories on politics, trends in the South Asian community, profiles of strong, smart South Asian women, and introspective pieces about what it means to have an identity that is both South Asian and American. Nirali’s stories are like the smart and supportive conversations you’d have with your girlfriends over lunch.

Nirali does have a feature article on some of the current young politicos in the South Asian community that is worth checking out.

  1. Hi,

If you haven’t checked out Divanee Magazine, definitely check it out! It’s a lifestyle magazine for south asian women living in north america. Some of my favorite articles include the health articles and advice on how to deal with the ‘unavailable desi man’

    Enjoy! Leila

  2. you should check out RAVE Magazine and rave*SQ Magazine, it’s sister publication. They def. up the bar on journalism, content, and quality.

  3. I have read Desi Xress – I was surprised when i saw it, I know its from Birmingham so we only just got it this month but I think it’s quite cool. It would be great if you could get it in America or somehow franchise it. We only have two national Asian papers, Eastern Eye and Desi Xpress. eastern Eye’s more for adults and full of news and stuff whereas sometimes, you just want to read an Asian version of tabloid or celebrity news mag with all the humour and pictures and shocking but funny bits and that’s what i think Desi Xpress does for me and my mates. Finally, something we’re not ashamed to take out of our bags in college!

  4. definitely check out the first issue of shabda magazine – http://www.shabda-mag.com – its first issue is coming to town on Jan 14th, but these ppl have really done a great job and i’ve been closely following up with them.

    all for now

  5. i think the farah ahmed some of you may be thinking of is someone different. nirvana’s farah is really beautiful, but she definitely looks indian. google her name and the magazine’s name, and you’ll find her.

  6. Nirvana Woman online is interesting. I had a great experience reading through their flip book. It is amazing technlogy. I think all the books are going to become in this technology. check it out nilu

  7. great to see indian and south asian fashion magazines at olympus this year!

indian style magazine, istyle was front and center with south asian fashion magazine, nirvana and its Night Hotel party clinching at the end. istyle editor harjot bassra made the rounds while nirvana editor farah ahmed, probably by virtue of her high profile, did the more “special appearances” type deal.

i came to learn that both women are canadian, which could explain why both appeared to be genuine friends. a refreshing contradiction to an somewhat cut-throat industry.

both great publications and both great women leading the pack. here’s to the ongoing success of all. cheers!

  8. I recently found out about your magazine becasue of a mailing I got on a singer called Shakti and a Education organization I think its great you guys are doing so much for the community. Where can I buy the mag? I went to Barnes and Nobless…no luck is it only available online?
