Where Nikki Haley’s money comes from

A few weeks ago I cited the ridiculous assertion by Republican Congressman Jim Gerlach that it was somehow wrong for his Democratic opponent Manan Trivedi to accept money from…Indian Americans. Well, a noteworthy portion of Republican Nikki Haley’s haul in South Carolina may be coming the same way:

More than 30 percent of Nikki Haley’s campaign cash came from outside South Carolina, more than three times what her opponent Vincent Sheheen has raised out of state in their race for governor.

Sheheen’s campaign quickly seized on the news.

“The truth is Nikki Haley claims to be an outsider, but more than 100 PACs have bought and paid for her vote,” Sheheen campaign manager Trav Robertson said of the Republican state representative. “No other candidate who has run in South Carolina history, to my knowledge, has ever gotten as much money from outside the state as Nikki Haley has…”

Among donors who listed their occupation in Haley’s most recent campaign finance filing, about 6 percent were attorneys.

Lakhwinder Singh, who lives in Jamaica, N.Y., was one of several Indian-Americans across the country to send a check to Haley, whose parents emigrated from India to build a new life in South Carolina. Singh contributed $1,000 after he met Haley at fundraiser in his state.

He said he has friends in South Carolina, but Haley’s campaign is most important to him because of their shared heritage. He said Indian-Americans also rallied around Bobby Jindal in his successful run for governor of Louisiana…

An article in the Hindustan Times noted Haley has attended at least half a dozen galas organized by the Indian-American community and estimated she may have raised $250,000 at them. At one event in New Jersey, Haley told the audience that she wanted to open up avenues for business ties between South Carolina and India.

Sheheen, whose ancestors emigrated from Lebanon in the late 19th century, has experienced similar support on a smaller scale, receiving contributions from both the Arab-American Leadership PAC and Dr. James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute. [link]

That’s great. Apparently all you have to do is tell some uncles that you want to “open up avenues for business ties between South Carolina and India” and that is good enough to fill ’em coffers. All you aspiring politicians take note. Do you think Haley admitted to them that she does occasionally go to gurdwara? Maybe if she becomes governor on Nov. 2nd she can accompany President Obama to Amritsar? I am just putting that out there for the internet to pick up. It would make for good symbolism (but would cause some tea baggers to suffer a stroke).

  1. . Apparently all you have to do is tell some uncles that you want to “open up avenues for business ties between South Carolina and India” and that is good enough to fill ‘em coffers.

wuz that dude an “uncle”? intelius indicates he’s 49, so probably, though that’s not that old. anyway, lots of people are race-conscious. you see ’em on these message boards all the time. and obviously not just brown people. at least nikki haley is an american and there’s no issue of foreign entanglements. but i don’t get why race-men and women don’t endow an academic scholarship for people of their own group instead of giving money to politicians. she’ll win anyway, so there’s no yield from the marginal investment being made here.

  2. also, a novel way for black candidates to raise money. they just need to shave their heads, brownify their names, and perhaps people will give cuz they look brown! though i guess can’t work as easily for women candidates cuz of the head shaving.

  3. “All you aspiring politicians take note” – all you need is a cousin using a popular South Asian blog to keep plugging your name.

  4. I sort of didn’t get your point in the end. Are you dissing uncles who are contributing to the young and upcoming Indian-American politicians? Or the idea here is that the “uncle money” is cool, but the uncles are always worth a little chuckle.

  5. but would cause some tea baggers to suffer a stroke

I’ve read hundreds of your entries on this website. This represents a low point. Say what you want about the Tea Party; this childish method of attacking them puts you on their intellectual level.

    don’t worry, they have medicare.

If you have even one child, you’re uncle/auntie material.

  8. wait, so if i replicate in the near future, i’d be an uncle?

If you go rogue and replicate (and you do seem to have the aptitude),you’d be quite famous, and most probably prosecuted. However, if you reproduce like everyone else, you’d instantly join the desi uncle fraternity. Sad but true.

sorry. i did mean replicate with a dilution factor of 50%. so i guess….

  10. So Abhi, if she had a “D” next to her name this would be OK, right?

abhi’s a moderately liberal democrat. i don’t get what your guys’ issues are. he’s liberal,.most, but not all, of the posters and commenters are liberal here. just how it is. i’m not liberal, and i hope haley wins, though from what i can tell the governorship in SC is weak anyhow. support the candidate who aligns with your ideology, period. i really don’t care if the republican party is mostly white religious nuts if their views align with mine on the salient issues (as a brown atheist). the repubs won’t control foreign policy (i lean toward isolationism, which means i have no home anywhere politically in the mainstream) and be able to enact theocratic laws under obama. so i’m obviously in their favor right now.

do you want him to pretend to be objective? lame and boring.

OTOH, more productively, there is an equivalent south asian american weblog run by people with conservative political views? i don’t know of any. until then you have to accept that normal liberal bias will be dominant here because it’s not possible for humans to genuinely be purely objective on these issues without being boring.

    • do you want him to pretend to be objective?

No, I want him to be pragmatic and not so dismissive of people who are to the right of him, politically. Otherwise, it is just predictable and THAT is lame and boring.

  11. I wish there was some real dialogue about politics, instead of the republican/democrat liberal/conservative dichotomy.

  12. It’s OK for Tea Party candidates to raise lots of money from white supporters out of state, but not for brown candidates to raise money in the same way.

The bigger issue is one of Haley’s old job with the hospital, but that’s less politically sexy so it doesn’t seem to be as big yet.
