Aziz is Funny

Aziz Ansari’s show, Parks and Recreation (earlier SM post), may or may not end up surviving very long (who knows?), but with appearances like the following eight minutes on Jimmy Kimmel last week, it may not matter. Ansari is clearly paving the way for a nice career in Hollywood:

In the clip above, I love the way Ansari handles the “where are you from?” question. His audience is completely in on the joke; he doesn’t ever have to break his deadpan assertion that he’s clearly a “good ol’ boy” from South Carolina. He’s not shying away from his “difference” from other comedians and actors, but he’s not making it the center of his shtick either. Notice that, despite his obviously Muslim name, he doesn’t feel a need to bring any of that stuff up, and as a result, for the most part nobody else brings it up either (except perhaps, when he’s accused of starting a “Jihad” against IMAX…).

And it seems to me that he basically connects on every little anecdote or bit he comes up with in this eight minutes. If he’s always this good, he will soon be a fixture on the late night shows.

  1. he’s one of the funniest twitter people ever.. heard him on the radio this morning discussing the entire IMAX cause… hi-larious.

  2. hey… is he wearing a borrowed suit? thats a really short jacket.

“fat, brown and on the groun'”. i like.

  3. Ronnnnn Swannnn-sonnnn!!! Love Parks and Recreation, although at times it feels like I’m the only one. Nick Offerman and Aziz always crack me up without saying a word.

  4. whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? can this guy get any moooooooooooooooooooooooooore annoying?

  5. TV Comedian poll (so i’m not including Kal Penn or Russell Peters) : Aasif Mandvi or Aziz Ansari?

  6. Aziz is funny, but Parks and Recreation is going to get canned sometime next season.

I love comedy that doesnt use laugh tracks and so this show was already on my good side, but it just isnt cutting it.

  7. I remember this guy performing at the Indian Club’s banquet at NYU like after a bhangra dance. Who’d a thunk a Sternie would be on tv.

Hang in there, Shallow Stinker. If it’s allowed to develop it will be a good one, I mean did you see Office when it first started? Same ting, mon

  9. God that was hilarious – laughed out loud so many times. I hope this guy is around for a while. And props to Kanye for making a new fans day (year) like that.

  10. Aziz is awesome, much more effective than that other desi dude’s (not to be mentioned) Oppression Studies 101 approach.

  11. I think some of his lines were canned – what was that about some cousin on something – out of place. But the guy is funny.

Lol, you haven’t seen many stand-up comedian’s on talk-shows, have you? It’s standard practice.

Stand-up sits on the couch under the guise of doing an ‘interview’, when really its just another way for them to do some of their material. The host feeds them a prepared question to cue them and the stand-up takes it away, giving the audience a taste for some of his material.

Aziz Ansari is the king! I wonder who the next South-Asian name we’re going to see spoken with some acclaim in Hollywood circles.

  13. Aziz is funny, I like the congratulations on Slumdog Millionaire bit, “are white people like psyched all the time … at any give moment a white person is doing something critically acclaimed!”

  14. parks and recreation, and tom haverford, hilarious.

the 19 year old intern cracks me up the most though. “pick up, this is your sister ………. if you don’t pick me up I’m gonna draw all over your jeans!”

    it’s really, a terrific show.

  15. Hahahaha!!!!! This man is a lot funnier here now that he’s more confident! Oh man…”white people must be ecstatic all the time!”

  16. No, LURKER, i haven’t seen too many stand up comedians on talk shows. You have brightened my world.

  17. If you enjoy Aziz Ansari, check out his stand up if you live in the denver area.
