The Beginning of the End: Groundviews

Sanjana.jpg

This is my last day with the Mutiny, so I’m going to milk it for all it’s worth and fire off a few posts, Abhi-style.

I promised to blog about Groundviews. On Friday, I met with Sanjana Hattotuwa, the site’s editor, who was in New York on other business. We talked about the site and the situation in Sri Lanka. I’m excited to share that conversation with you here. I’ll do it in a few parts—we talked for quite a long time.

First, a little background: Groundviews is a citizen journalism site about what’s happening in Sri Lanka. It started in the fall of 2006. It’s perhaps the best use of citizen journalism I’ve ever seen—I think it’s a brilliant way to get around media censorship in that country. As I’ve become increasingly saddened by the progression of the conflict there, I’ve also been heartened to see the spectrum of people participating in Groundviews. Continue reading

The 9th DC Meetup is TODAY :)

Freer Gallery Smithsonian.jpg

That’s the Freer Gallery pictured above. Beautiful, nah? 🙂 That is where I’ll be meeting some of you, in just over an hour! If you can’t make it there for the 2pm movie* we are going to watch, try and attend the second half of the meetup, which will occur at 5pm, at Vapiano restaurant (near the Caribou Coffee on M street which no one goes to). We’ll leave from the Smithsonian at around 4pm.

The movie is just under two hours, but I’m allowing an hour for metro-ing back to the unholy triangle, since it’s the weekend and recently, they’ve been doing more maintenance, so there could be slight delays.

Vapiano is veg-friendly, not pricey and a lot of fun. I went to the DCist photog/DC Flickr meetup there last week and it’s an excellent choice for such gatherings. 🙂 We’ll be there from 5-7pm, though if past performance is an indication of anything, that could easily be something like 8 or 8:30. See some of you soon!

.

Achtung: if you’re interested in attending the whole meetup, and you want to watch the phillum with us, you must procure FREE tickets for the show, which are given out at 1pm. Continue reading
