Despite the fact that I’m a total Grinch during the holiday season, I have to acknowledge that this time of year isn’t only about consumption (monetary and culinary) and bad music. It is also a time for helping out those less fortunate. With that in mind I’d like to recommend two holiday parties to our readers (and I shall be at both). The first is tonight at 10 pm. in Washington D.C. at Cafe Asia:
In the years past we have worked with many organizations in the Greater Washington area to help bring local children a wonderful holiday season and give them encouragement and assistance in bettering their lives. We have also worked with a number of international organizations to help bring children hope who have been orphaned, affected by natural disasters, displaced by war and or have been born with disability. These organizations through our generous donations have been able to help build schools, provide education and sustenance for kids and provide hope for those that may have had none. The Sumil Shah Foundation for Children is looking for your support this year for the seventh annual toy drive. Through the Toy Drive we are able to collect numerous toys that are further distributed throughout the local DC area by way of our network. We also collect cash donations which we rely on greatly to help many unfortunate children locally and internationally. We welcome you to visit our website at sumilshah.org to get more information on these wonderful organizations.
The second charity party is in Houston next Saturday night at 9p.m. at Zimm’s Martini and Wine Bar:
Join us on Saturday December 15, 2007 for a fabulous night! We are throwing a charity party benefitting the DePelchin Children’s Center – a Houston area orphanage.Zimm’s is ours for the night! All we are asking is you bring a toy for the kids or an item off of the orphanage’s needs list. If you prefer you can donate money and we will buy the items for you.
If you guys know of any other charity parties thrown by desi organizations or individuals, please throw them up on our Events Tab (and mention them as a comment in this post). Please remember to drive responsibly when leaving these parties. And remember, if not us, WHO will think of the children?
Good job Abhi. Thanks for reminding people that Holidays is not just abt celebrating but also abt giving. I am looking for of a good organization here in US that collects funds for children in India.
Thanks Abhi…looking for such events in LA, if anyone knows of any.
Chetna, http://www.ashanet.org is the charity I collect funds for which might be of interest to you.
Abhi, I would have come to the Houston Party but I am already committed to a party here in Austin on the 15th.
Dari,
There’s the Blazin Hope Fundraiser in LA this Friday — Chee Malabar & D’Lo will be on the mike (and more), and the money goes to a good cause!

Dang it! I was in DC Saturday night-! I should have gone to Cafe Asia…! Had I only known sooner!
And had I known that TWO of you were going to be in DC Saturday night, I would’ve hosted the mother of all meetups. Drat and double drat. We’ve never had a Taz! (We have had an Abhi, at the first DC meetup…and maybe the next…stay tuned:))
Aww…! I would have loved it too! My new job means I’ll be coming to DC a lot, so maybe next time! It was good to see the SM commenters out and about informally in DC – makes you feel like Mutineers are always around, no matter what city you go to! I’m a lil miffed I didn’t see Abhi either, what’s with the super DL-ness?
I hope the LA mutineers can come out Friday – it would be good to see folks again…!
I knew that Abhi would be in DC, but the Evil one would not let me spill the beans, you know ;). I bet he is planning something here while I am off to you know where……… Taz, nice to hear from you. We cherish the Dinner we had in LA with you, more than a year ago. I must say though, Anna is THE QUEEN – when it comes to hosting a Meetup.
As usual, as a lurker, I am late to read and late to respond:
Question: Which Houston desi organization is hosting the event at Zimm’s?
Here’s another desi charitable event in Houston that’s coming up:
SHOLAY Movie Viewing at Bollywood 6 Cinema – Thursday, December 20th,9:00pm
Bollywood 6 is located at 2307 Highway 6 South, Houston, TX 77082 (corner of Richmond and Highway 6.) This effort is being supported by Tara Energy who is helping us raise funds for the William J. Clinton Aids Foundation. India has the highest number of people living with HIV of any country in the world and it’s time for us to do something about it.
The initiative aims to assist countries in implementing large-scale, integrated, care, treatment and prevention programs that will turn the tide on the epidemic. It partners with countries in Africa, the Caribbean and Asia, including India, to develop operational business plans to scale-up care and treatment.
If you cannot make it to the movie but would like to donate to this cause please don’t hesitate to contact any of the board members at http://www.netiphouston.org. Every dollar will be very appreciated. A few of us are meeting up at Masala Wok at 7:00 pm for dinner before the movie. Please feel free to join us and start the festivities early. Masala Wok is located at Westheimer, close to Beltway 8 across the Outback Steakhouse.
(Hi Anna! Hi Taz- Anna, I’ll be in DC from the 26th to the 29th so hopefully we can catch up. Taz, hope all is well. I may be in LA for the South Asian Law Students conferences at UCLA in February, will keep you posted!)
Hi Mini 🙂
Hmmm, wonder if we should have a DC Meetup on the 27th…especially since Yo Dad has such kind words for my events. 😀
if you do I will absolutely be there!
