  1. Happy Independence Day!

Thanks, Amardeep! I have an American friend who grew up in Madras and Delhi. Her parents were at Harvard and Radcliffe when her father proposed to her mother by playing Song of India to her over the phone, and they spent most of their lives in Desh.

    cute story…

  3. Thanks for posting this music. It’s so full of sweet melancholy. That last link is of a well-loved Swedish tenor singing in French The Song of India from the opera Sadko. It’s by the same composer who wrote Scheherezade. In this part of the story, a newly rich Sadko asks three strangers what lands to seek and so a Hindu sings of India: “And still the snowy Himalayas rise In ancient majesty before our eyes, Beyond the plains, above the pines, While through the ever, never changing land As silently as any native band That moves at night, the Ganges Shines… Then I hear the song that only India can sing, Softer than the plumage on a black raven’s wing; High upon a minaret I stand Upon an old enchanted land, There’s the Maharajah’s caravan, Unfolding like a painted fan, How small the little race of Man!” Happy Independence Day!
