Nice Meet-up Y’all!

A big thanks to everyone (~20 people) that made it out to the first southern meet-up (Texas-sized) that Sepia Mutiny has had. I kid you not, a few readers drove in from Austin (2.5 hours drive) and San Antonio (3 hours drive). The weather was as absolutely perfect as it ever gets in Houston (we sat outside) and the Hobbit Cafe had great beer that kept coming (as you’d expect in The Shire). The official meet-up lasted until 9 p.m. but the unofficial meet-up went well past 1 a.m. It might be a couple more months until the next Texas meet-up, but it will either be in Austin or at the SM Bureau Offices in Houston. Hope to see some more of you next time.

  1. it indeed was fun meeting you all, specially learning the dance moves from Shodan. I would love to hear it from the girls if they did use them on the dance floor ๐Ÿ˜‰

could we see more pics from the meet-up?

  2. Abhi’s given me the pics. I will soon be sending them out to all who showed up to the meet-up.

  3. to the person in the photograph wearing a white shirt (which, incidentally was the same thing i wore to the georgetown meetup) – either there was some photoshop meetup mash-up work done or i have a twin brother i didn’t know about.

  4. I am so jealous. The text messages about how much fun you guys were having at the meetup just fueled that jealousy fire.

Abhi, we have to have an LA Meetup next time you are in town…the west coast has been neglected for too long.

I can state, most definitely, that those dance moves made it past the Hobbit Cafe, and into the city. And possibly even further.

Could I get the pics too? Particularly the incriminating ones?

  6. It was a fun meet-up. I can’t remember much if what went on that night except Shodan’s dance moves and singing prowess of the ladies from Sugarland. (Adaidai, is that you? You can give Celine Dion a run for her money in Vegas.) Funny how I can’t remember anyone’s handles, except Shodan and technophobicgeek.

I promise I’ll stay longer the next time, even better if it can be in Austin.

  7. Shodan,

That may be the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. I am not worthy!

Adaidai, the singer from Candyland Sugarland, is it?

Can we have that video of Adaidai singing? ๐Ÿ˜€

  9. post-dinner show involved pole dancing….and a certain couch saw a bit of action!

  10. Man…I really wanted to come to that, but I couldn’t spare the time on account of I’m just visiting family and friends in Houston. And now I’ve decided to extend my visit, which retroactively frees up last Saturday. Any desis working on a time machine out there?

    SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION:

Listen to Border Crossings on KPFT 90.1 FM on 1st, 3rd, & 5th Wednesdays at 10 pm. (And get involved, we’re always looking for new volunteers at Border Crossings!)

Also, come check out this film at Rice Media Center on Saturday, June 9. There will be two shows, 1:30 pm and another at 3:30 pm. The director will be in attendance, and you can email houstonsikhs@gmail.com for tickets/info.

  11. anarcosikh, I think I have a perfectly good idea of who you might be ๐Ÿ˜€

Had a great time at the meetup myself, yes, the Sugarland Singing Sensation shall me fondly remembered!

Abhi, please keep those art exhibition/poetry slam ideas rolling.

  12. Singing sensations? Art exhibits? POETRY SLAMS?!?

We could be a regular hippie collective.

I do too, but I’m not entirely sure. Anarco, would you mind sending me an email? My address is enclosed on a gif on the right side of my blog. Thanks.

I also recommend seeing Widow Colony. We showed it at the Bay Area Spinning Wheel this year and the audience consensus mirrored my own conclusion: the film is an affecting, heart-wrenching, and unforgettable work.

  14. why do i feel like i was at a completely different meet-up? clearly i was sitting on the wrong side of the table. i have no idea what you guys are talking about! singing? exactly why tables should be round and not long and rectangular. i missed the couch action too. must have been too busy dancing.

  15. Nivritti, I second that. People on our side of the table were also disconnected from the conversations on the other side…though I couldn’t stay late to even know anything about the couch action..

  16. OK, for all you poor souls out there who haven’t seen this… it really changed my perspective on time. In fact, it changed my life. It should be added to everyone’s singing repertoire – sugar landian or not.

  17. Lyndon B Johnson went to Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College, not UT. I can’t write the entire context here, who needs to know it will know.

  18. i missed the couch action too. must have been too busy dancing.

You didn’t miss much. The couch action girl almost fell on poor Meercat. Fun bunch at our end of table. Oh, and some say Ms. Rowling is a Susan Cooper biter. I can’t write the entire context here, who needs to know it will know =) The wife has already issued a fatwa on my soft head.

  19. I skimmed thru the editorial review of Susan Cooper’s book. The verse there reminds me more of LOTR than Harry Potter. Three rings for the elven kings… I deny the allegations that Rowling would have copied my favorite fictional character. (Ok, that’s not true, my favorite fictional character is Samwise Gamgee.)

  20. On his 11th birthday, the boy discovers he has magical power. His scar wards off evil. Sounds familiar? I keed, I keed, but I do like to rile the faithful. I am sure Michiko Kukutani wouldn’t sing such high praises of Potter if it were a rip-off. It’s possible that both writers were inspired by same folktales.

  21. haha. i love how you have to type in brown to leave a comment. ok—just wanted to say i was one of the 1 a.m. ers, and even though i was only a friend of a lurker, now i am religiously reading this awesome blog. had a fantastic time. good people. good times! ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Clearly none of you have read Books of Magic,by Neil Gaiman??? Aka what Rowling MOST DIRECTLY ripped off?

  23. As one of the post-dinner pole dancers and definitely one of the last to leave the party ’round 2 a.m., I have no recollection of such couch entertainment…or do I? I definitely wasn’t the one involved, I know that much!

But now I want to know who WAS!
