Purple Reign

Shilpa and the Queen.jpg

Shilpa Shetty blah blah racism blah reality show winner blah. πŸ˜‰

…Shilpa was in London to meet Elizabeth II at Commonweath Day on Monday, celebrated at Westminster Abbey.
The actress delivered a speech on — you guessed it — racism.
Shilpa — reportedly wearing an intricate purple velvet Tarun Tahiliani sherwani — curtseyed before the Queen, and then almost slipped in her high heels. Apparently Prince Philip smilingly told her to be careful about the shoes, averting the fall. [linkypoo]

In other news, yesterday, Pakistan should have stuck with spinners, but decided otherwise. πŸ˜‰

In other other news, Since I don’t talk cricket walk cricket and laugh cricket, I have no clue what the previous statement involving Pakistan means. I’m just shamelessly flirting with all you cricket-fiends.

Finally, for those of you who might be wondering why on earth I posted this if I was obviously sooo not interested in it, it’s really just because I thought sherwanis were for boys and I wanted to consult my kitchen cabinet. Well?

  1. Hmmm I thought Sherwanis were for boys as well but oh well you learn something new everyday. I kind of think that’s a cute picture though that loud contrast of that dress to the Queen’s subdued outfit was the first thing I thought of and perhaps the only thing.

  2. Since I donÒ€ℒt talk cricket walk cricket and laugh cricket

Anna..you got it wrong. Its “I don’t tawk Cricket, vawk Cricket and lauph cricket”

BTW That purple Sherwani looks good.

  3. Since I donÒ€ℒt talk cricket walk cricket and laugh cricket

Is that a play on a Superstar’s famous words? Tamils will understand what I mean.

  4. Its hard to tell who’s the queen in the shot above. They both look pretty frumpy. Shilpa would have looked so much better in this.

  5. Anna:

I’m just shamelessly flirting with all you cricket-fiends.

Oh, goody! can we flirt back? And bowl a maiden over? See, I can talk cricket walk cricket and also play cricket (well.. almost play cricket, but that’s minor detail)! hee hee..

As for Madame Shetty’s adventures, the comments on that article should be a hilarious read too.

Oh btw, linkypoo? linkypoo? Are you Kareena Kapoor’s No.1 fan or something?

    Karthik:

Is that a play on the Superstars famous words? Tamil’s will understand what I mean.

It could be a play on Senior AB’s words too. After all, Thalaivar’s words were in a movie that I think was a remake of Namak-Halal, where Amitabh uses similar lines and goes on to talk about Vijay Hazare and Vijay Merchant indulging in some serious considerations at Melbourne stadium. And click here for the actual quote!

  6. Overheard in the bunker:

“Am I Kareena Kapoor’s No.1 fan or something?? Who the hell is Kareena Kapoor?”

nb: the Mallu-in-residence does not watch Bollywood. πŸ˜‰

  7. Karthik – I’m not sure which one came first. Thalaivar or Amitabh . Hilarious all the same.

Big B’s came first and its way better than Thalaivar’s.

Here is a suggestion to the Mutineers, How about a post on hotosity of South Asian Cricketers?

Exhale– the fact that Cricket is getting any coverage at all on this here Amreekan blog is miraculous enough. πŸ˜‰

Aye..most Mutineers are Cricket virgins, so its better to start with Cricket eye candies rather than talking about positions like Silly mid off, Square cut, deep third man, First slip or deep fine leg… which sound vulgar to them πŸ˜‰

  10. In other news, yesterday, Pakistan should have stuck with spinners, but decided otherwise. πŸ˜‰

I disagree myfairanna, you know and I know and I know that you know and you know that I know that it was their experienced all-rounder Razzaq that they missed the most. Dontchathink?

  11. experienced all-rounder Razzaq that they missed the most.

Of course they missed him, but they did not make the best of the situation. 57 in the last 5 overs? They could have avoided that, Kaneria gave only 3 runs in his last over and you know how the pitch was…

  12. Razzaq…what they needed was Afridi! blasting away and he can spin a bit too

in any case, pakistan looks distinctly incapable of making a mark this time……thats why i was actually rooting for their victory…..the calypso brigade will be much more formidable when the semi-final berths are to be decided….

    with a silly grin

    Go Blues

  13. I was fully expecting a leopard print sherwani.

anangbhai: That was before Shilpa became popular in the UK, now she cannot afford to do that and have the PETA come after her or something. (I am not saying that they will, just saying someone might have a problem with that)

    Go Blues

Let us be a little clear about our support here… πŸ™‚

  14. hehehehe…she is just hot, plain and simple. Every mangalore and konkani girl ive ever met were just very very good looking πŸ˜€

  15. I thought sherwanis were for boys and I wanted to consult my kitchen cabinet. Well?

A sherwani is not gender specific … just the name for the outfit which generally has a long, “coat-like” top … most often worn by men … and there happens to be no distinction or another name for it for when a female wears it … as in how a male wears a kurtha and a female wears a churidar though essentially they are same outfit (please do not start screaming how they are not) … a male would not wear the type of sherwani shilpa is wearing, even though it is called a sherwani

  16. forget what she was wearing – am i the only one who was irritated that she actually BOWED (or curtseyed, whatever) in front of the queen? i understand that the act is proper mannerism for those who meet “hey royal highness” [insert gagging sound], but it would’ve been deliciously mutinous had her beautiful brown self stood tall and proud instead.

  17. male wears a kurtha and a female wears a churidar though essentially they are same outfit (please do not start screaming how they are not)

Not screaming you at all, but to be perfectly accurate, a kurta is a top and a churidar is a bottom with “churis” or the million folds at the bottom of the legs on a churidar. A churidar-kurta is the whole outfit, as opposed to a salvar-kurta where the pants are looser. But I agree that a sherwani is not a male-specific outfit.

  18. I don’t know much about Royalty. But, I’ve heard that the Queen doesn’t cum like mere mortals; she arrives, and that too, after someone has announced it!

  19. i understand that the act is proper mannerism for those who meet “hey royal highness” [insert gagging sound], but it would’ve been deliciously mutinous had her beautiful brown self stood tall and proud instead.

Or she could have said “Yo, wassup Liz?” There’s certainly a precedent.

  20. understand that the act is proper mannerism for those who meet “hey royal highness” [insert gagging sound], but it would’ve been deliciously mutinous had her beautiful brown self stood tall and proud instead.

I don’t think it’s fair to want to have it both ways. Either you don’t give a damn about the Queen, in which case just don’t go. Or you get all excited about the honor and the privilege, then you have to follow the rules of the house, imo.

  21. Not screaming you at all, but to be perfectly accurate

I was referring to the items (churidar, kurta, sherwani) as the outfits people refer to when using that terminology as opposed to the specific pieces (which the name indicates) …

When someone says they’re wearing a sherwani, kurta, etc … I know what that they mean the whole outfit and not just the individual piece …

In south india, “churidar” and “salwar” are the common phrases used for the whole outfit.

  22. sherwani or salwar kameez- why is the girl curtseying to the queen of England any way. Didn’t India declare independece a couple of years ago? Silly twit.

  23. According to the designer, its a “coat” not a sherwani. πŸ˜› For those that can’t get enough, there are more pictures of the outfit on their website.

From India Times website: (http://xtraedition.indiatimes.com/quickiearticleshow/msid-1762801.cms) “Shilpa wore a beautiful coat from the new fall collection which will be out at Fashion Week,” says Tarun, who has been designing Shilpa’s wardrobe for long now. “It was a long aubergine, velvet printed coat with flowers brought to life like a Persian carpet with jewel bugs and beetles – very modern Indian orient. This was worn with a tunic,” the designer elaborated.

  24. why is the girl curtseying to the queen of England any way

    um… out of respect, maybe…

    Silly twit.

oops, above answer may not suffice for you

  25. a male would not wear the type of sherwani shilpa is wearing, even though it is called a sherwani

Prince and/or Morris Day David Bowie Steven Tyler Eddie Izzard Dennis Rodman Little Richard

all men. Definitely own similar wardrobe items.

  26. British subjects are expected to curtsey on being presented not citizens of a free country. ‘um…out of respect, maybe?’ for the representative of a country that robbed and oppressed your ancestors for centuries. rani are you for real?

  27. Its hard to tell who’s the queen in the shot above. They both look pretty frumpy. Shilpa would have looked so much better in this.

Not sesasonal, etc., that pharaoh-phugly look– I say the girl does it all just fine and gets better. She’d do great on the red carpet, not Deepa Mehta, plus she’s promoting Tarun Tahiliani, just as she should. Y’all calling sherwanis male gesr, please. This is fashion, that’s how it works. Think of all the Dior and YSL’s famous Le Smoking, forty years ago and still going strong variations of dinner jackets for women, including one recurring hit in which the jacket is as if thrown on backwards and buttoned down the bare back.

  28. I think the curtsey was just “age before beauty”- I mean. she was wearing royal purple, so it would have been a bit much if she also did a Nancy Reagan.

I bet Bill Cosby would rock a sherwani. He used to wear a kurta-pajama to bed.
