Morning After Recap of the L.A. Meetup

The rumors are true kids, and we have pictures to prove it (need to join as member to view pix). To quote Vinod, last night was “the BEST Sepia Mutiny Meetup EVER!”

GujuDude and his macaca

The quick run down- the place was hip, the people that came were cool, the drama kept at a minimum and the party was a great success. It started at happy hour time, and went late into the wee morning as 15 of us broke bread together at The Pantry at 1am. As you can see from the pictures, everyone was smiling and having a great time. Big ups to all the mutinous (I’d guess we had a posse of 50 throughout the night) that came: Abhi, Vinod, Sumit, Karthik, Rumi, Builder, Vinod (x2), Hanish, GujuDude (+1), Prashant, Lata, Payal, Ravi the lurker, Amar, Gaurav, Pawan, Sharat, Sachin, Rajan, Lavanya, Arun, Deep, Shivani, 1 /26, Satish, Thomas Kurma, Shruti, Dimpal, Vivek, Anu, Ami, Mad Guru, – and all those others that didn’t sign in!

What exactly happened that made it so kick ass?

Though it started at 7pm, people were naturally on IST time. As people joined the mutiny, they had a sepia rakhi tied to their wrist to let them know they were now a ‘part of the mutiny.’ People slowly filtered in, and folks hesitantly approached our table of brown folks. We then loosened folks up (or was it the alcohol?) with an icebreaker. The icebreaker was to a list SM handles that people had to match with real names and on the flip the Sepia Mutiny Trivia (after the jump). First to answer all corrrectly was GujuDude and his prize, as you can see from the picture, was a toy macaca.

  1. What city does Amardeep live in?
  2. What is the name of Neha’s assistant monkey?
  3. Who was featured on the candy bar that we “sold” last April Fool’s day?
  4. Where will the newest SM blogging offices open in January of 2007?
  5. Where is SM’s world headquarters located?
  6. What University did the original Macaca attend?
  7. In what year did the Sepoy Rebellion take place?
  8. Name one of the books that Kaavya V. plagiarised from:
  9. Who is the desi congressman from Louisiana?
  10. Last year did an Indian kid win the Geography Bee or the Spelling Bee?

The juicy details everyone is waiting to hear…? The whole bar waited in baited breathe, one eye on the door, for the infamous pardesi gori to arrive, but she never did. I don’t recall any ass grabbing, but, I do remember seeing lots of shots being had. The room was heavy with chemistry, and though, Sepia Destiny made no love matches last night, I do forsee some connections in the future. Let it also go down in the SM records that 3100 to 12790 was the Ms. Pacman score that I beat Abhi with. But the real winner to the Ms. PacMan Mutinous Challenge was bike-riding builder, who royally kicked MadGuru’s ass at the game.

Lata and Payal show off their mixtape CD

The goody bag? It was The Sepia Mutiny End of Summer Blow Out: The Mixtape, a compilation of a song by each mutineer, and some great other “mutinous” songs. I wish I could share but the lawyer in the bunker has informed me that it may not be the best thing to post online. I will say this- there are some musicians that will let you download music legally off their myspace site, and almost all of the bands have been talked about here on SM. Until the lawyer changes his mind, this will be a list for the special few that came out for the Sepia Mutiny End of Summer Blow Out!

Abhi, Taz and Vinod Thank You for the Fun

Much love to everyone that came out and thanks to all the bloggers, commenters, and lurkers for being so open and friendly about meeting new people.

**The first person to answer all the trivia questions correctly (and doesn’t live in the Southern California area) has a chance to win the last CD I have from last night. Just answer in the comments and include your e-mail address.

which of course meant that none of them could hit on Taz since they were all now “family”

  2. Hey chick pea, thanks for the shot out to Michigan but question 6 is asking which University S.R. Sidharth went to 🙂

Other than that you got it!

  3. Is that sweat on Guju Dudes shirt? He must have had a great time. BTW very friendly ratio for the ladies. PG would have loved it, sheed have been hung over and married in Vegas by now.

  4. Yes. It is true. I was beat at Ms. PacMan. The results were something like this. Hahaha! Seriously though, thanks to Taz and Abhi (and any nameless poo throwing interns) for putting all of this together. It was so much fun, I found myself just hanging out meeting all kinds of fun people and didn’t stop to draw even once. Thanks also to GujuDude and “Crazy” Ravi for so many laughs my stomach ached! Lots of great people (basically fill in everyone I had a chance to chat with). I’d love to see all of you again anytime. Can’t wait for the next!

Abhi/Taz, Please note that I am the first person to answer all the questions correctly and leave my e-mail address; the CD is rightfully mine; thank you very much. Damn! For a CD like that, I am willing to cheat resort to technicalities:D Chick Pea/WesternGhaat, Better luck next time:D I tell you: Mallu macacas are wicked… Peace

  5. dammit :)–abhi you should feel flattered, and on that merit alone i should win?–tecnhincally speaking the first macaca was a chimp in africa, right ennis?

oops. dammit. i was still inebriated from the Trojan Win!

no worries. i still love ya SM.. looks like you guys had a ball… taz: kudos for your hard work..

and delighted that USC kicked Nebraska back to corn husking… Booty Booty Booty (and that Texas got it’s ass whooped last week…) thank god college football is back (along with nailbiting, ulcers, and stress!)

and on that macaca’ish note, rememberto watch MEET THE PRESS today when russert hopefully goes for allens jugular.. i mean question him and webb… i got my masala popcorn bananas in hand, yellow macaca shirt, tivo, and wishful thinking of being on the panel so i can do my admonishing um… political questioning…

  6. a sepia rakhi tied to their wrist to let them know they were now a ‘part of the mutiny.’ which of course meant that none of them could hit on Taz since they were all now “family”

taz…um… so now instaed of sepia aunty with setups.. you were sepia mommy? :)…or as manish quite humorously put it.. rakasha abandon 😉

  7. I’m totally jealous that you macacas had such a rollicking good time, the SF meetup was awesome but no where near as kick ass as this!

PS Mad props to Gujudude’s collarbone sweat stains.

  8. O Taz, O best beloved. . . IST time? Had they been drinking too much chai tea or eating too much ahi tuna? Wish I could’ve been on the wrong coast with you all!

  9. Hey UBM, I was only giving an “assist”…not going for the shot. So, if YOU took the shot, then you should get the prize. But in all fairness, it was Chickpea who did most of the work.

  10. But in all fairness, it was Chickpea who did most of the work

WesternGhaat, I’m sorry I can’t hear you; I’ve got this new CD and I’m playing it loud;)

  11. it was Chickpea who did most of the work.

oh WesternGhaat, thanks for the props.. yeah, I did most of the work.. sans reward… (whats new ? :)) i have hope that taz will burn me a copy anyways and save it for me when i sprout up in LA in less than 10 months for good..

no worries… UMM-no love lost.. rolling in my can as usual with the other legumes..

happy sunday macacaland.. t-20 until the showdown… 🙂

  12. Chick pea, I’ve been thinking and you know what? Since I live outside the US, I could get ousted on a technicality. The tension is killing me;) Happy Sunday, to you too.

  13. update on MEET THE PRESS

um.. not fan of Webb being against women in military… since i am a ‘chick’ pea…

russert went after allen on ‘macacagate’ and he says he’s sorry and didn’t know what he was saying.. he made the world macaca up.. um.. yeah.. ‘MADE UP?’.. never heard it before? if he thought if it was slurring anybody he wouldn’t have said it? and he was welcoming webbs camera man to virginia.. um.. yeah.. the confederate flag? because he a rebellious antiestablishment kid… and he still is? yet he follows George W.. although he says he has evolved… yeah.. evolved into calling people unknowingly macacas..

and both of them–40 lashes with a wet noodle for chewing tobacco… don’t they know it causes cancer?

which candidate is the lesser of 2 evils? ughhhh… who else wants to run in VA?

  14. Chick pea, I’ve been thinking and you know what? Since I live outside the US, I could get ousted on a technicality. The tension is killing me;) Happy Sunday, to you too.

hmm… if i get it.. i will mail a copy to you.. don’t worry.. 🙂 now off to educate more folks on macacadom…

  15. GujuDude, I know your collarbones don’t sweat– damn semi-shiny shirts from Banana Republic have a strange sheen when photographed. Congrats on your macaca, Macaca! 😉

  16. Now that the gauntlet has been thrown, I hereby appeal to A N N A and Abhi to arrange another DC meetup in the coming months so that we can show LA how it’s done. And, I will be more than a little miffed if a band out of DC called Duology was not included in the Mutinous MixTape, ;).

  17. GujuDude, I know your collarbones don’t sweat– damn semi-shiny shirts from Banana Republic have a strange sheen when photographed. Congrats on your macaca, Macaca! 😉

Thanks DD, you are right. It isn’t sweat. My nose will bead up with sweat as a first indicator, therefore, if no beady sweat on my schnoz, no sweat stains elsewhere. I also wear undershirts, since I do sweat like a seive when the heat picks up. Cotton, the fabric of our life rocks.

MadGuru: Crazy and myself appreciated the ride to the pantry. We may be nuts, but we’re self aware lunatics who’re glad to entertain. Did builder ever make it back on his bikeride? Booyakasha! Respect for hustling 15 miles.

All were cool and accomodating. Again, thanks to the Sepiamutiny bloggers Abhi, Taz, and Vinod for hosting the event and all the other mutineers for hanging. The mixtape was a nice touch along with the quiz (O’Doyle RULEZ!!!)

That Macaca toy is awesome. I can’t stop playing with my damn monkey…errr.

  18. Actually, the best meet-ups EVER are will be in LA D.C. Houston. 🙂

I can’t stand the hype anymore. February better get here soon!

  19. Actually, the best meet-ups EVER are will be in LA D.C. Houston.

Dude, to top this one, you’ll have to show up in a spacesuit. Now that would be cool.

  20. Actually, the best meet-ups EVER are will be in LA D.C. Houston. 🙂

I’d like to see you try- without my help. 😛

It’ll be like invisible ink handle bingo and astro ice cream goody bags…

  21. What are your views of interracial marriage?

I’m not sure since that wasn’t one of the quiz questions at the meet-up and I didn’t study it.

  22. Is erin(hug) actually Pardesi Gori? This argues against it, but who knows. Maybe Ennis is right and they’re both Banksy.

  23. MadGuru: Crazy and myself appreciated the ride to the pantry. We may be nuts, but we’re self aware lunatics who’re glad to entertain.

And we all appreciated the entertainment. You have to bring “Crazy” with you everytime you go to a meet-up. Thanks to all of us who heard Abhi say “Fedral” instead of “Fi-gue-ro-a”, I think our table was worth the wait because it was better than Abhi’s or Taz’ 😛

I usually don’t expect to find maps in a bar. Thanks, builder!
Did builder ever make it back on his bikeride? Booyakasha! Respect for hustling 15 miles.

Furrealz, although he was already sick of the attention by the time we got to The Pantry. I hope everyone in LA starts biking and using pocket maps to get around. That would make the environmentalist in Shruti very very happy. I heart builder and his trendsetting ways!

In fact I heart everybody I met there. I have a crush on all of you now– shy people, drunk people, all the guys, all the girls… sigh I need more desi in my life (and not in the Pardesi Gori kind of way). Thanks to Taz and Abhi for putting on this ass-kickingly good time. More meet-ups please!

  24. 😀

madguru offered me a ride home.

nice meeting everyone, madguru, ami, gujudude and his crazy friend whose name I forgot, shruti, and the rest of you guys. don’t hate me if I don’t recall your name, what you do, where you’re from, or what you look like the next time we meet. 😮

  25. look, taz, i’m finally commenting!…thanx for the fun nite out, next time i won’t bail too early, promise…can’t wait to the next blog meet up…ahem…i mean end of the summer blow out 🙂 i’m checkin’ my calendar for the 26th as we speak…

  26. Thanks to all of us who heard Abhi say “Fedral” instead of “Fi-gue-ro-a”

It was the fault of our waitress who had that really cool tatoo but seemed to me to be a little drunk. She told me Federal! I swear.

  27. Thanks to all of us who heard Abhi say “Fedral” instead of “Fi-gue-ro-a” It was the fault of our waitress who had that really cool tatoo but seemed to me to be a little drunk. She told me Federal! I swear.

Funny- but our waitress didn’t drink- she was straight edge like me. I know this because I was waiting at the bar all by myself (chatting with her) at 7pm waiting for people to show up for a good 20 minutes. (ahem!)

  28. Funny- but our waitress didn’t drink- she was straight edge like me.

Ummmm…you seem drunk to me sometimes too 🙂

  29. dude, that night was awesome. the place was crackin! my only complaint is that not enough people were gettin’ down to james brown. thanks sepia.

  30. Mad props to The Hostess with the Mostess, Taz. The meetup was more fun than a barrel of ummm…macacas? I’m not into geographic rivalries (see where it got Pac and Biggie) but damn, LA represented. Enjoyed meeting many interesting people even if I did sense contempt b/c my song of the moment is London Bridge. I’m only sorry my night didn’t extend into a meal of slightly gummy pancakes at the Pantry. PS. The CD is sublime.

  31. You have to bring “Crazy” with you everytime you go to a meet-up.

Crazy is like a feral animal that visits your doorstep for the food you leave out. I’ll give it a try, I think hot sauce covered coleslaw or crusty looking pie with ice cream may do the job.

she was straight edge like me.
Ummmm…you *seem* drunk to me sometimes too 🙂

For a second there, Taz, you seemed a bit off balance in the Pantry. No drinking? Suuurrrre.

  32. Hello all, I had so much fun on Friday night, it was great meeting so many cool desis, and I don’t think I’ve laughed that much in a long time. And also the table of kickass peeps at The Pantry was fun fun fun! I’m bummed I didn’t get more peeps’ contact info, but hopefully we will all see each other on the flipside–or maybe we should petition for regular meetups… PS Gujudude, I think you can just sprinkle worcestire sauce and Mr. Crazy will come running =) PPS Taz, you rock! Without you it wouldn’t have been the BEST Sepia Mutiny meetup! Holla!

  33. OK, I’ve figured out who Pardesi Gori is. It’s Banksy!

Could it be Pardesi Gori is more ephemeral, stream of consciousness, a reflection of our own worst fears, a pychological caricature of a very famous villian.

  34. Without you it wouldn’t have been the BEST Sepia Mutiny meetup! Holla!

You’d have to fly to DC this fall for that event, but I’m glad you enjoyed L.A.’s greatest meetup thus far. 🙂

Sriram, Kenyandesi, Msichana, Barmaid, Umang…our next meetup won’t have schwag, but it will have gorgeous women, thanks to all that inspiration provided by one hottie named Lenika. More soon… 🙂 🙂 🙂
