I may no longer have pink hair and my square-toe docs are 3,000 miles away, but I like to think that being punk requires more than such outward signals. I’m nowhere near as in to anarchy as I once was, but I still totally love the idea of DIY everything. In honor of that hallowed part of punk ideology, I present to you the following blurb which features advice from some desi beauty expert whom I’ve never heard of…I ganked it from the May 2006 issue of Jane, which I’m trying desperately to stay fond of, even though it is suddenly for 20-something women. WTF?
Oh, Sassy…how you are missed. You are the only reason I still subscribe to the monthly which is supposedly your phoenix.
DIY pore shrinkage
Here’s an easy way to minimize the appearance of enlarged pores courtesy of Anjali, who was formerly the Martha Stew of Indian daytime TV and now is head of product development at Shobha salon in NY.
Using a blender, puree one medium unripe tomato (the greener the better…) with one teaspoon of honey– this will mix the astringent power of the fruit w/the natural moisturizers in the honey. Apply the pulp to a freshly washed face, leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse.
And if your problems go beyond skin issues, toss the remaining puree into a shaker, add some salt, a little vodka and a lot of ice. Shake, pour, drink. – Celia
Um, no, I haven’t tried it. But I was the guinea piglet for L’oreal’s latest mascara so I think I should get a pass on this little experiment. If YOU are brave enough to smear extra sweet salsa on your punim, do let us know if this results in less holes in your face, thanks .
JoAT–
Dark brown eh? Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll try it out. Also, for the waterproof warning. I never knew, I’ve been using black wp this whole time. Okay, I’m going peruse this thread and save all the wonderful advice somewhere… or, um, just transfer it directly onto a shopping list. Either way. 🙂
You are welcome enjoy 🙂
Ade I promise you dark brown soft smudge eyeliner and a hint of dark green or purple or even navy (trust me on this) shade on your lid….will bring out your beautiful desi skin and dark eyes if you are a brown eyed girl 🙂

Click here for Almay’s tips and tricks as well and they are very good about packaging a look. They have entire eye collections based on one’s eye color and the colors work great.
Here for Covergirl.
Have a great week and continue looking fabulous 🙂

I don’t think I’m the only one who is slightly disturbed by your habits or more accurately how you’re insisting that they don’t adversely affect you, when logically they would. There’s plenty of research which shows that smoking and tanning are both awful for you. Resenting companies for environmental degradation is fine, but refusing to protect yourself w/sunblock b/c “you shouldn’t have to” makes no sense. We shouldn’t have to do a lot of things and in an ideal world we wouldn’t. But it ain’t ideal and we have to suck it up and do what’s good for us. I personally wouldn’t follow your example, but I am very aware that thanks to your persuasive, charismatic and now ubiquitous words, others might and that worries me. Just my tunda paisa.
Anna:
Of course they adversely affect health, I never denied that; I don’t see where I have insisted that having a few cigarettes a day and not wearing sunblock (BTW, I have never “layed out” to tan, I’m brown enough, thank you very much; but I do enjoy spending time outdoors) is the path to perfect health. I’m just saying that there are other factors that are dangerous to our health as well, of which we hardly ever criticize.
Next time, I will either include a disclaimer, or better yet, I just won’t disclose personal information. Anyway, I tend to disclose too much information.
Jesus Christ. One thing that occured to me is that I don’t even get this much slack in real life from people who know me personally about my “habits”. Sheesh. I should have just not disclosed any personal information re: my lifestyle.
JOAT —
As long as this has become the mother of all personal care threads, any enlightenment 101 you can offer about hair coloring products? Effectiveness, damage to hair, carcinogenic effect, “natural” vs. “non-natural,” etc?
ANNA might want to return to pink hair, after all, and as for me, it’s so boring to be just another Cylon Number Six when there are so many of us who look exactly the same. I’m really trying to find a way to stand out from the Cylon crowd — of course, being a Six I’m a blonde, but most of the readers here…. are probably not, so don’t mind that in answering the question. Just assume that I’m one of the, uh, desi Cylon models. 😉
And please don’t tell anyone about this fit of individuality — if the Cylon powers-that-be find out, they might try to box my brain. 🙁
Oops. Disregard above post.
Jesus Christ. One thing that occured to me is that I don’t even get this much slack about my “habits” in real life from people who know me personally. Sheesh. I should have just not disclosed any personal information re: my lifestyle. I will now try to stick exclusively to writing comments about politics, culture, etc.
Anytime you go lighter then your natural hair whether you have black hair or brown hair you are essentially bleaching your hair at varying degrees. If you have generally healthy hair and highlight it in the summer and once in a while it’s fine. Doing it all the time is no good. Long term effects of this are bad because you strip your hair off it’s natural pigment and replace it with a artificial pigment which dries your hair. Seen too many desi women with hair that looks like straw. I used to work with this woman who wore blue lenses and had blond hair and she tried to pass them off as natural!!! WHY WHY WHY… She was beautiful naturally the way I pictured her. I love jet black hair and unfortunately wasn’t blessed with it. I can thank my mother for it. So every 3 months I color my hair jet black.
Clairol is the category captain for hair color and all their products are really good. If you are looking to maintain your natural hair then I’d suggest Excellence or Preference by L’Oreal or any of the Nice n Easy lines by Clairol. If you are looking for fun highlights try Natural Instincts or Herbal Essences by Clairol which has low ammonia (which in the grand scheme of things means shit because it doesn’t have any lower bleach) or Feria by L’Oreal.
There are tons of try at home highlighting kits available at drug stores but honestly they aren’t worth it because they do not give you the kind of results they boast. I’ve tried them all, infact I’m the guinea pig it’s based on. There is one I really liked and is cheap and easy to use. Garnier’s Nourishing Multilights. It was the easiest product to use at home but sparingly. Don’t go crazy with it 🙂
to coattail JoAT– Clairol Hydrience is pretty good, and they’ve worked to reduce the smell a lot, but my #1 favorite is Loreal Feria: 1) they have some fantastic colors if you want to change it up a bit 2) their conditioner is so fabulous I wish they sold it separate from the Feria color!
and Loreal Color Rays in Fuschia is AWESOME. Til it turns brassy in about 4-5 weeks… but then color over it and you have subtle highlights…
Ya, I’m on the Feria bandwagon too. I use it once in a while just to add shine and some tint to my hair. O how it shines!
Hair Colour: My most important hair colouring advice :): Try and use ‘level 2’ or even ‘level 1’ of hair colour (“non permanent”)– these are all less harmful than “permanent” i.e. level 3. Luckily level 2 is now fairly widely available in supermarkets, although only in certain brands. I personally feel level 1 is a pain as it is much more work, but level 2 works really well — and in any case, you will probably need to touch up in 2-3 weeks, so it makes no difference that level 2 is ‘non permanent.’
JOAT and the others, I think I am going to make sure that I get a one on one make up consultation from one of you. I am completely USELESS with a brush and pigment. I either look like doink the clown or sayuri the geisha when I am left to my own. Besides the dabur vatika deal I have going on…there isn’t much else.
Can the next east coast meet up be a girlie one where these fabulous women can change scarecrows like yours truly into swans? Please? 🙂
