Meetup May 28th in Manhattan? Maybe!

Rumor has it that the most mysterious mutineer of them all (hint: it sure as hell ain’t ME) might be in Manhattan on May 28th…so maybe we should have a mini-meetup? Maybe I should overcome my Malayalee proclivity to massacre sentences via massive amounts of alliteration.

Maybe.

I know everyone who LIVES in New York City will leave town, but that just means that this post is dedicated to those mutineers who, like me, will be visiting the area for the holiday weekend; I’ll be in Lawn Guy Land for a wedding on Friday and Saturday. I know I’m not the only one who’ll be there, if only because this wedding has 800 guests.

Anyway, I’m happy to postpone my return trip to DC on Sunday from lunch-ish to something a little later on, if there’s good reason to and I can’t think of better reasons than you.

I shouldn’t say this, but if we do meetup, there’s the possibility of a mutineer mole, i.e. someone who blogs for us but wants to just hang back at his first live SM orgy. So it’s possible that three mutineers will be in Manhattan on May 28th, though considering the moley-moley-mole (Thanks Austin Powers!), maybe it’s more like 2.5. πŸ˜‰

Comment away if we should seriously consider this. Some of us have Amtrak tickets to book. πŸ˜€

P.S. That picture is from the September 11, 2005 meetup at the Indian Bread Co.

P.P.S. Yes, we will have another DC meetup shortly. Or longly. Vatewer.

  1. Craziness of all craziness- if it’s before 2 pm, there is a chance I might be able to make it as well (I am leaving the area that day, but I might be able to meet up before leaving for my flight!).

  2. That does it. We’re meeting ass-early (i.e. 11am, when I’ll still be hungover) so that BRIMFUL can join us. Squeeee, bitches!

  3. Oh crap….I’ll be in the Bahamas πŸ™ (I can’t believe I’m upset about being in the Bahamas because I’m missing a SM meetup!!!!!!) Note to self: Get a life

  4. I’m game. The Mysterious One? Is that our lately quiet, Billy Bragg listening friend?

Is Nina Paley around? The last I heard, she won a Guggenheim fellowship for Sita Sings the Blues. She was also apparently profiled on CNN-IBN a few weeks ago. Congrats to Nina for hitting the big time.

Note to self: remember to wear a different shirt this time around, so as not to disappoint all the obsessive photography types.

  5. Will try and be there–the 28th is my birthday; I don’t know yet if I have any other plans :)–but would love to see A N N A two weeks in a row!

  6. Note to self: remember to wear a different shirt this time around, so as not to disappoint all the obsessive photography types.

Just for THAT, I DEMAND that you all click on the image, so that it blows up to its rightful 1024 x 768. Scrutinize the professor, won’t you? πŸ˜‰ Grumble-foto-obsessive-grumble-mutter.

  7. At the risk of repeating myself, are there really no more takers for a midwestern get-together??? Or do you just not want to identify yourself as residing in the heartland??

  8. I’ll be in the city that weekend celebrating my quarter of a century mark – might be able to stop by =)

Is it the Monkey?!?!? I want to meet Rajni!

  10. Chandi,

It was brought up a few times, most recently here. Ennis is our only midwestern mutineer, so it’s his prerogative as to when, where one is held, etc.

I don’t know how long you’ve been SMing, but in case you’re new, I’ll tell you that I’m the one who tends to initiate meetups, since I currently hold the Mutiny’s Maharani Gayatri Devi Chair for Socialite-studies. Since I am from Northern California, currently live in DC and constantly traipse off to New York, those are the three areas which get the most meetup love. It’s nothing personal. πŸ˜‰

  11. So I expect lots of air-kissing.

    check.

    And plunging necklines.

what, the scandalously short skirt (kindly note my strategically placed forearm) in the foto above wasn’t good enough? πŸ˜‰

  12. Thanks Anna. I’ve been reading SM since the beginning of this year, and loved every bit of it. It’s a sign of how rockin’ y’ll are that I am trying so desperately to find a meetup close to where I live. Just to bask in your glamorous presences πŸ™‚ :).

  13. Will try to be there. I owe brimful an apology in person for slagging off Gomez πŸ˜‰

  14. Happy birthday Pooja and congratulations Nina. I will try to be there as well but also can’t confirm until closer to the date.

  15. Who is who in the photograph? Or wait, who are the other two people, apart from Manish, Anna and Dr. Singh?

And Chandi, I’m game for a meetup in Chicago.

  16. Masale.Wallah:

    Clockwise from the good Professor:

-his wife -nina paley -the vij -gilligan, my friend from college (ucd) -ginger/mary-ann hybrid

  17. Maharani Gayatri Devi Chair for Socialite-studies : That is sooo old school! I think the SM endowment ought set up another one in the name of Bina Ramani, “the hostess with the mostest.”

  18. Thanks Anna. I’ve been reading SM since the beginning of this year, and loved every bit of it. It’s a sign of how rockin’ y’ll are that I am trying so desperately to find a meetup close to where I live. Just to bask in your glamorous presences πŸ™‚ :).

my goodness you took the words right out of my mouth. unfortunately i will be leaving ny on the 27th so have lots of fun. and please do take lots of pictures.

  19. If SM decides to do meet up in Chicagoland, I’ll be there. But only if the meeting is held on Devon/Diwan Street.

  20. Amrita:

    What’s Devon/Diwan Street?

Devon Street is located in Chicago, and it is the Mecca of all Desis in the Midwest. Here, Desis converge to frollick amongst their own kind, eat their own food, and buy their own clothes and masala.

I say “Devon/Diwan” because a few years back, Desis changed the name “Devon” to “Diwan”. In fact, when you are on Devon/Diwan St, you will see street placards that actually say this.

This is because Devon/Diwan street is experiencing many political contentions transported from the Desh to Chicago. Here, you will see Indians and Pakistanis battle it out with one another over street names, restaurant signs, territory, etc. Even on the “Indian” part of Devon/Diwan, each block corresponds to a certain sub-Indian group. Hence, you will see the “Gujarati” block with Guju restaurants, stores, etc. Then, there is the “Taste of Punjab” section. The Pakistani segment of Devon/Diwan St is like Karachi a la Chicago style. Each identitarian block clearly markets what the specific identity it is. So, on the Gujarati side you will see folks on the street wearing Gujurati style saris, etc. On the Punjabi section, there is a conspicuous presence of pugdis. Over on the Pakistani side, you see women wearing burkhas and men with fez caps. In sum, you see a willful assertion of prototypically “traditional” identities playing themselves out.

I hope this answers your question. I am sure you probably didn’t need to know all this information, but perhaps this information will serve SM well when it decides to put together a meet up here in Chicagoland.

NOTE: My descriptions of the Desis on Devon/Diwan St are not meant to put down or insult these diverse groups; I am simply saying that I think that maybe these Desis are being a bit extreme in terms of identitarian politics.

  21. Now that I’ve got this idea stuck in my head, I’m getting excited about a potential SM meet up on Devon/Diwan St. Actually, I’m already looking forward to it.

SM Mutineers, shall we meet up on July 1? I know, July 1 is “Canada Day” in Canada, so this might be problematic for Canadian Mutineers, but surely you won’t miss the opportunity to convene with fellow Mutineers?! Just skip out on “Canada Day”, row across the Lake Michigan, and hang out with us for a day full of screaming thrills and smashing fun!

    What do you say?

  22. FOB:

Yup, you’re right. I did think of that but I didn’t want to write about it because I couldn’t remember exactly what the dynamics of that were. But you are on the spot, yaar.Much thanks.

  23. If there is a Chicago Meetup i’ll be around the weekend of July 14-16… do it then… puhhhhhlleeeeeze? (Ennis is the midwest SM’er)

According to my Hindu calendar in Gujarati, I must judiciously fast and spend July 14-16 in solitude in order to facilitate my union with Brahman and iswara. As such, I cannot make it.

    Sorry.

  25. chickpea:

in my guju calendar, tis the perfecto time to meet up…and unite with the asparas then πŸ˜‰

Upon verification, you’re right– even all of the planets are aligned auspiciously. Count me in then!!!!!

But wait. Why should we be forced to settle on one date? Let’s do both dates!!

  26. hehe..since i flew to DC for the meetup, i think it would be funny to attend the chitown meetup.. and heck we can celebrate the end of my exams (the reason why i’ll be in that windy city..and heck i’m throwing a fete on friday night, so you’re more then welcome to come..shoot me an email at garbanzobean(at)gmail(dot)com)… cheers!

Only if your party is going to be a typical Friday night Desi gathering. Otherwise, I see no point in cohorting with other Desis.

  28. chickpea:

    cad:would you expect anything less?

    No!

So, shall I bring five trays of samosas from the “Taste of Punjab” restaurant and old Kishore Kumar CD’s?

  29. what, the scandalously short skirt (kindly note my strategically placed forearm) in the foto above wasn’t good enough? πŸ˜‰

thanks for pointing that out anna [not] … now i feel all pervy like and going moleey-mole-molee-moooolee-moolle-molee-mooole… MOLEE…Mollleeeeeee ..MOLEE! MOLE! MOLLLLE!

  30. funny ting – I just booked my ticket to spend a very brief weekend there. I’ll get there 6ish. Too late??? Hope not!

  31. CAD: of course it isn’t the typical gathering… i’m a ‘united colors of benetton’ bean…bring on the pintos, the kidneys, black-eyed, baked, and the limas as well.. garbanzos are not the only ones who are invited to the bean fest 2006..

  32. eddi, i hope you’re taking the late train, coz i can only get out of church by 12.30. and jane, i can’t believe you’re going to the bahamas instead of sticking around for the meetup. vatever u do, beti, u vill always be an indian. i’ll be watching this post.

  33. ANNA, I might be in NYC then too, and if I’m there, I’ll drag P and co with me πŸ™‚
