Canadian PM Pauljinder Martin pays his respects before a Guru Granth Sahib at a gurdwara (via Ash Singh). I’m not sure of the date on this photo, but his government is facing a new election in January after a loss of confidence vote, so maybe he should’ve stuffed a few more rupees into the donation box
I’m straining in vain to imagine Dubya doing a courtesy bow in front of a Koran or Torah, or a Hindu or Buddhist scripture. If you have a photo, do share.
All the politicians in Canada shill…
Heres a pic of the Conservative party of Canada leader Steven Harper at a sikh gathering.
And a pic of the left wing NDP leader Jack Layton.
The liberals are the worst though, they’ve relied on the ethnic vote for too long and grown corrupt. Its time to vote them out.
I’m not sure I like this kind of vote grabbing gesture.
in case you’re reeeally interested in canadian pols and issues… it’s all quite boring actually.
i’d rather talk about the UK than canada. who cares if brown ppl live there? they are sssooo boring…. even canadian porn isn’t distinctive.
You call this not distinctive?
Does anyone ever say, “Honey, let’s order some Canadian food tonight”?

I’m not hatin’ on Canada; I lived in Alberta for awhile. Canada rocks…
I think it’s great that they have to, if they want to win.
But I agree about the Liberals… I still believe they’re the best party but they need some time out of power.
Like Ananthan said, its is good in some ways. Canada is a mosaic, where the south asian community makes is a signficant piece.
Unfortunately for martin and the liberals, quite a few of their scandals over their terms have south asian connection sand given the logic that one wouldn’t want to be associated with this, they have to give as much recognition as they can to the South Asian Community … hence their high-profile trips to Sri-Lanka and India in Jan of 2005 (which is when I believe that picture was taken Manish).
Out of the approximately 21 south asian candidates running for Member of Parliment seates, 6 are Liberals, the Conservatives have 7, whilst the green party and independent parties host the rest.
Martin has played it carefuly with both Sri Lankans and Sikhs with make up the largest subsets of Canada’s south asian communities. We are probably one of the most prominent communities who vote, and he needs everyone he can get. As for the other party leaders, you’ve just got to follow the current leader.
As for Canada being boring, I and many of at least on the west coast would disagree… Vancouver & The lower mainland has much to offer, from the outdoorsy adventures, to the artistic and even the sports enthusiast. Hey ask Manish, I’m quite sure that he has made many getaways here … whether it be for the parties or just the sighseeing ;-).
I think Razib’s gleeful arrogance shows why Americans are hated in every corner of the globe!
Thank heavens american politicians have not been reduced to grovelling to khalistanis and tamil tigers.
Well said Johnny Walker. Canada’s not that distinctive but there’s no better place to live if you’re brown.
No, they grovel to loonies like Pat Robertson, eh.
“Thank heavens american politicians have not been reduced to grovelling to khalistanis”
okayyy. hold a useless grudge much?
Out of the approximately 21 south asian candidates running for Member of Parliment seates, 6 are Liberals, the Conservatives have 7, whilst the green party and independent parties host the rest.
For the four main parties, I count 24 South Asian candidates so far, seven of which have even a shot at winning. Ten for the Tories (DeSouza, Mandur and Obhrai — Electable; Veerasuntharam, Hundal, Khroad, Ahmad, Khosla, Sangha and Bance — Hopeless). Seven for the Liberals (Malhi, Dhaliwal, Ratansi and Bains — electable; Mirza, Grewal and Johal — Hopeless). Seven for the NDP (Anwar Naqvi, Brar, Shergill, Balkisson, Ali Naqvi, Uppal and Siddiqui — all hopeless).
That’s preliminary of course. Big names like Ujjal Dosanjh and Rahim Jaffer haven’t yet been officially nominated.

Razib’s trolling, but Canadians are too easy a mark for his considerable talents. Boo. I say Boo.
