Serendipity is a pretty lame romantic comedy that’s a staple of cable reruns, where I had the misfortune of running into it this morning. Like Bollywood, it peddles soft-headed romantic fatalism in a one-joke script.
It does, however, do a very funny New Age parody. John Corbett (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) hams it up as Lars, a self-absorbed New Age musician. This schmuck in a silk kurta plays an instrument ubiquitous at Indian weddings while his hype men play tabla and sitar.
As Lars watches the cheesy, Yanni-like music video his record label put together, he complains, ‘You can’t fight off an army of bloodthirsty Vikings with a shehnai. It’s illogical.’
This little fudge cake of brilliance is probably the only shehnai joke in Hollywood history, and definitely the only one involving Vikings.
Here’s another thing the SATC gallies were doing wrong with capital W: Never talking about condoms and barely mentioning birth control. Issues any sexually active female should be talking about with her best friends, in the real world that is.
Why is it unhealthy to maintain close friendships while in a long term romantic relationship? Why is it unusual for somebody to remain close to friends that they’ve had for over 10 years longer than they’ve had the relationship?
I don’t understand why men and women are supposed to abandon their friendships to make their relationships work, or even to downgrade them. These are different spheres of life, and while you should always be friends with your partner, that doesn’t mean that your partner should eclipse all other friends.
Carrie Patel,
My point was that, either by accident or by design (and the fact that they kept blabbing personal relationship information to each other during their lunch get-togethers didn’t help either), they did not end up being emotionally closer to their partners than to their friends. Yes, close female friendships have their own unique dynamic (as do close male-male friendships), but ideally one’s partner should be one’s best friend too — that’s how close you two should be to each other and how well you should get on — and that was what was basically going wrong in the 4some’s lives.
Hence by earlier points about a) they were going for the wrong men for the wrong reasons, and b) they were behaving incorrectly and inappropriately with regards to divulging extremely personal information about the guy and/or the relationship to third parties, namely each other.
*Hence by earlier points
Typo, should say “My earlier points etc”
Actually, I can’t stand The Apprentice. My opinion of Big being hot doesn’t automatically turn me into an alpha male groupie, nor does it make the fantasy created for the target SATC demographic into my own personal fantasy. Did you miss the part where I said I wouldn’t put up with the same sh*t Big gave Carrie?
How did the chat about Serendipity turn into the “SATC” chat??? I liked the movie but I was seriously looking for the name of the song that Corbin’s character was playing in the movie.. I loved it and wanted to try and either download it or buy it… Do you know the name of the Shehenai song that was in the “Viking” video??? – LOL !!!!
