Indira Varma Lands in Rome

Even though many recent roles in Hollywood that are accessible to Desi actors are generally geared more towards terror or medicine, there are some actors of South Asian origin landing non-traditional and non-South Asian characters.  British Asian actress Indira Varma, of Kama Sutra and Bride and Prejudice fame is one of these actors as highlighted by the very prominent character she portrays in the new HBO series, Rome.  Varma, who played Naveen Andrew’s sister Kiran in Bride and Prejudice, takes on the role of Niobe,

“the wife that Vorenus has not seen for nearly eight years. A peasant princess from a large and influential Roman clan. Proud, beautiful, selfishly devoted to the interests of herself and her family.” If you don’t get HBO, click on the video button here to see a preview of Rome (again, featuring Varma)   If you do get HBO, the show airs Sunday evenings, from 9-10 in the evening.  More on Varma available over at IMDB.

  1. Huh, I missed the previous episodes but just watched tonights. She’s a pretty good actress by the measure that other people had a hard time recognizing her from B&P. Too bad I missed out on whatever her secret is.

  2. I adore Indira. I was so confused when I saw her in the commercial for Rome, I actually called a friend that I always watch Kama Sutra with (it’s our porn) and yelled “She passing! And I think she finally grew her hair out!”

  3. Please no Brick bats at me for the above comment….I am very innocent

Didn’t you guys see my expression when I said that…..

  4. I have been meaning to check her on IMDB for days, after finally watching Rome, but you beat me to it. It’s a good show, and yeah, she’s pretty hot.

  5. Hi everyone; I have a question, I heard from a friend and found at a web site, that Aishwaria Rai was gonna be in this TV serie, is this true?

  6. I think the British television and film producers, such as the BBC and Film 4, need to be acknowledged for non-discrimination and promoting British Asian actors, before being picked up by Hollywood or even Bollywood cinema and silver screen. “Rome” is an HBO – BBC production. We even had shows that were exclusively made up and written by Asians and went on to be great successes, such as “goodness gracious me”. If you haven’t seen it you should.

  7. Indira Varma’s acting was good too, so please don’t overlook that when commenting on Rome. Give her credit for her work not just her looks.
