What’s got them waking up so damn early? Awesome jobs? Too much water before bedtime? Unbearable spouses? We’ll never know. It’s unexplained by the ACNielsen Consumer Confidence and Opinion Survey, which also found that Indians are more likely than others to make home improvements, purchase fashionable clothes, and take weekend trips.

  1. Definitely a climate thing, imho. When I lived in Ghana I’d wake up naturally at 6am every morning, and I’m not an early bird. Plus, the earlier you wake up, the more hours you have to work or move around before the afternoon heat.

  2. What’s got them waking up so damn early? Awesome jobs? Too much water before bedtime? Unbearable spouses?

I think they should compare this to a study of the frequency of morning sex. That should answer some questions.

  3. Well considering I do travel a lot and spend all my money on clothes I would tend to agree with this. but I mean early birds? That would mean something if I wasn indonesian. Most of my friends still can’t wake up earlier then 9.

Anyone got a place to crash? I spent all my money @ Guess!

  4. It does seem to be about geography. See how three South-east Asian countries are top of the list? These are countries with a very early sunrise, so of course during summers the sun would be blazing in by 7:00 a.m. And in the rural parts with agrarian communities the intensity of sunshine would determine the waking hour.

But what’s up with the Danish, Germans and Austrians? Why are they waking up so early. Just some Germanic eccentricity?

  5. Thalassa – u are kinda correct. My take is – its geography, plus religion. The sun rises somewhere between 5 and 5:30 in the morning in those areas. And in countries like Indonesia which is majority Islamic, albeit moderate in beliefs – a majority of them do get up for their morning prayer (1 of 5) which occurs at sunrise.

this probably explains the +20% incidence over second in the list (Vietnam – not an Islamic country)

  6. I dont know enough about Norther European light times, but daylight in general is a precious commodity there, so maybe they just train themselves to take maximum advantage of it. Funny, since Southeast Asians are presumably taking maximum advantage of cool daylight, having far too much of the hot kind.

  7. obviously they’re all getting up early to pursue their extramarital affairs 😉 (see Bad Indian Boy post)

  8. all the women who have to put out kolam before sunrise or lakshmi will pass them by… and all the nice brahmin guys who have to say their 108 gayatris before sunrise… well, that and the morning sex 🙂
