Miss India 1997 Nafisa Joseph hanged herself on July 29, distraught over an argument with her already-married fiancé. The 25-year-old model and MTV VJ had locked her mother and a friend into an adjacent room in her Bombay flat. The publicity over her death may have sparked a wave of copycat suicides in Bombay.
i hope the copycats weren’t also models. they need to reproduce!
This is terrible. How awful for her family.
It does make you think. Some of the happiest people I know have very simple lives (and er, simple looks) and some of the most unhappy people I know have the most complicated lives and brilliant looks.
Could medication have made a difference? It’s such a sad and tragic story.
I see she went to the same school as me.

There’s a saying along the lines of “your expectations are set by the time you’re 20, your means by the time you’re 30”
It’s good to be a late bloomer and potentially tragic to bloom too early.
I gather she had problems with her boyfriend and decided to put an end to her misery. dressing like a slut (good thing, IMO) doesn’t make one a modern, independent, free-thinking indian woman (TM).
OOPS !! Didn’r read the post : “Miss India 1997 Nafisa Joseph hanged herself on July 29, distraught over an argument with her already-married fiancé.”
I guess the first line of my previous post was superfluous.
And here, MD, I always figured you were gorgeous.
“And here, MD, I always figured you were gorgeous.”
That’s the beauty of the interconnectowebnet. I can be ANYTHING I want to be. In fact, how do you know I’m not gorgeous? I just might be….or not.
Of course, if I could actually figure out how to put those digital picture thingies onto my weblog, I would have the whole world decide (after suitable photographic doctoring of aforementioned documentary evidence. If it’s good enough for CBS…..)
And now, back to the last two pages of my talk. I am almost done and then I can leave the fluorescent glow of my office. Yeah!
No offence to Nafisa, Why would women want to get involved with a married man.
Are married men more attractive than their unmarried counterparts!!!!
All the woman on this planet. Please share your thougts on this!!!!!!!!!!!
An update on this story:
PTI/Indian Express: Nafisa case: Khanduja arrested, released on bail
I think it’s pretty insensitive to label this woman as a “slut” because you don’t agree with how she dresses. You have no idea what she is like. She was obviously suffering from either depression or some other mental illness. As the son of a Psychiatrist, I have noticed that there is a tendency among the public to blame such conditions on “weakness” or failures of character rather than simple mental illness, which is clearly what is at fault. This girl most probably had a chemical imbalance of some sort, and being constantly judged on her appearance and being thrust into the public eye (as well as being involved in a potentially disastrous relationship) all probably contributed to her fate. We should try to be more understanding instead of condemning.
I am Sorry to hear that
Poor Nafisa Joseph. We need to enjoy ourselves, and each other, and care about each person, and do everything we can to help each person care about themselves, regardless of their status, position, etc., in life. This is a simple, but very effective way to dramatically improve the world in too many ways to discuss here – socially, economically, politically, diplomatically, and culturally. I have proven this by getting positive results in dealing with some of the most angry, violent, and dangerous people in the world. If we all work sincerely together to make the world a better place, we can succeed. We must start with ourselves, and it is not as difficult as it may seem. Everyone stay strong, positive, healthy, and sincere. My best to you all. I will find a way to help India, too. Tony
Rocha
ok, being pretty isn’t a guarantee that everything in your life would be perfect
but it’s also not completely irrelevant either
this girl in my opinion is just too short sighted and extremely selfish to do something like this. Being so pretty if she just had a little perspective she could have easily kicked back and waited for the next rich guy to come along and swoop her up.
your fiance is already married? boo hoo. go pick out from one of the other 900,000 guys that are standing in line ready to woo you.
